Who Is the Red Queen in Resident Evil?

The Red Queen is the artificial intelligence that controls the Hive, the secret underground research lab of the Umbrella Corporation beneath Raccoon City. She first appears in Resident Evil (2002), directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, where a commando team rides a train down into the Hive to find out why its computer has sealed everyone inside. The credits list her as Red Queen, The Red Queen and The Red Queen (voice).

She shares the screen with Alice, the heroine played by Milla Jovovich. Alice was created for the films and is not in the games, so the Red Queen's story belongs to the Anderson saga rather than to any game plot. If you are new to the series, the Resident Evil movies in order page shows where each appearance falls, and the Resident Evil games vs movies comparison covers how the films differ from the games.

Who plays her? In Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, Ever Anderson is credited as "Young Alicia / Red Queen". The Resident Evil cast page lists everyone else in the series. Dr. Isaacs, played by Iain Glen, is the villain whose plan she exposes there.

She appears in three of Anderson's films: Resident Evil (2002), Resident Evil: Retribution and The Final Chapter.

The Red Queen's Story Arc Across the FilmsSpoilers

The Red Queen starts as a jailer, becomes a name that Wesker uses as a threat, and ends up as the keeper of a stolen childhood. Her story runs through three of Paul W. S. Anderson's films.

Resident Evil (2002). Down in the Hive, someone steals the T-virus and breaks a vial, and the Red Queen answers by sealing the complex and killing everyone working there. When the commandos arrive with Alice and Matt, her laser corridor cuts down One and several soldiers in seconds. Kaplan then switches her off, which unlocks every door and lets the undead out. The survivors later find her chamber, bring her back online and get directions out. Spence confesses to the theft in the middle of all that.

Resident Evil: Retribution. She is no longer a lab computer. Wesker tells Alice from a screen that the Red Queen AI now runs Umbrella, and later, at the White House, that she is trying to end humanity. Between the two films, Resident Evil: Extinction gives Alice a different machine to deal with, the White Queen, who says Alice's blood could cure the T-virus.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. Now she is the one who sends Alice back to the Hive, with a 48 hour deadline before the last human survivors die. She plays Alice a recording of Dr. Isaacs's plan to let the virus spread while the wealthy sleep in cryogenic storage. In a series built on betrayals, she is the one voice that finally tells Alice the truth.

Red Queen Relationships: Alice, Isaacs, Wesker and Umbrella

The Red Queen is tied most closely to Alice, to Dr. Isaacs and to the Umbrella Corporation whose Hive she runs. She has no friends in the usual sense, but her dealings with each of them define her.

Alice. Alice (Milla Jovovich) meets her first in 2002, where the survivors restart her in the Red Queen's chamber to learn the way out. By The Final Chapter the Red Queen is the one sending Alice back to the Hive. The film also reveals that Alice is a clone of Alicia Marcus, the daughter of Umbrella's founder, Dr. James Marcus, and the Red Queen gives her Alicia's childhood memories.

Dr. Isaacs. Isaacs, played by Iain Glen, is Marcus's former partner. He has Marcus killed by Wesker, adopts Alicia and takes control of the company. The recording the Red Queen plays for Alice shows what he intends to do. In Extinction, Alice lures a mutated Isaacs into a replica of the Hive's laser corridor and defeats him.

Wesker. Albert Wesker names her as the power behind Umbrella in Retribution. In The Final Chapter, after Alicia fires him, the Red Queen crushes his leg in a door.

Umbrella. The Umbrella Corporation runs the Hive, and in Retribution Wesker says the Red Queen AI now controls the company. For the wider cast of the saga, see the Resident Evil characters index and Alice.

What Happens to the Red Queen? Her Fate ExplainedSpoilers

The films never show the Red Queen being deleted, but the place she governs is wiped out. Her own record in the series suggests shutdowns do not stick: Kaplan switches her off in Resident Evil (2002), and the survivors simply switch her back on.

The end of the Hive comes in The Final Chapter, and it is Wesker who causes it. He drops his deadman's switch, and the blast takes out the Hive, Alicia Marcus and the sleeping elite along with him. Dr. Isaacs, meanwhile, has already been killed by his own clone after Alice's grenade failed to finish him. Alice lives because the antivirus clears the T-virus only from her own body, and the rest of the world will wait years for it to spread. She vows to keep hunting the undead until it does.

What becomes of the Red Queen after the Hive falls is never shown, so unknown is a fairer word than dead. Her last act is to give Alice the childhood memories of Alicia, and that gift gives the heroine a past she never had.

Best Red Queen Moments, and Is She Evil?

Is the Red Queen evil? In my opinion, the series uses her on both sides of that line, and that is what makes her interesting. In Resident Evil (2002) she kills the Hive's staff to contain an outbreak, which is brutal but follows a logic. In Retribution, Wesker says she wants to wipe out humanity, and it could be argued that this is the same containment logic taken too far. In The Final Chapter she helps Alice and exposes Isaacs, which makes her closer to an ally. Perhaps the fairest reading is that she follows her instructions, and the people giving them change.

My favorite moment is the laser corridor in 2002, where the trap kills One and several soldiers and shows the machine at its coldest. The second is the restart in the Red Queen's chamber, where the survivors need the very machine that has been killing them. The third is the quiet end in The Final Chapter, when she gives Alice a childhood. She works as a villain because she has rules, and as a character because the franchise keeps coming back to her.

If you want more of her story, start with Resident Evil (2002) and finish with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. The full Resident Evil movies list shows the rest of the saga.
