Who Plays Alice / Alicia Marcus?

Who Is Alice in Resident Evil and Who Plays Her?

Alice is the lead character of the Resident Evil films, played by Milla Jovovich in all six films from Resident Evil (2002) to Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. She was created for the films and is not in the games. In Resident Evil (2002), directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, she wakes naked and with no memory in the bathroom of a large, empty mansion. A commando team led by a man called One bursts in, and Alice learns that she and a man named Spence were posted there to guard a hidden entrance to the Hive, a secret underground research lab run by the Umbrella Corporation.

The credits use two names for her. She is simply Alice in Resident Evil (2002), Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Resident Evil: Extinction, Resident Evil: Afterlife and Resident Evil: Retribution, and she is Alice / Alicia Marcus in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which links her to a figure from Umbrella's own history. Jovovich is billed first in all six, so the face on the poster never changes.

Across the series she shares the screen with characters such as Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield. The reboot Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021) and Zach Cregger's Resident Evil (2026) do not list her among their characters. For the wider comparison between the two worlds, read Resident Evil games vs movies.

Her powers come from the virus. By the time of Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004), directed by Alexander Witt, she walks out of Umbrella's captivity changed by the T-virus, and that change drives most of what the series asks of her. Alice's Story Arc Across Six FilmsSpoilers

Alice's arc runs from an amnesiac guard in a mansion to the last human standing against Umbrella, and each film changes what she can do. In Resident Evil (2002) she slowly regains her memory while the Red Queen computer seals the Hive, and a laser trap in the Red Queen's corridor kills One and several soldiers. Umbrella scientists capture her and the mutating Matt back at the mansion. She wakes strapped to a table in Raccoon City Hospital, breaks free, and takes a shotgun from an abandoned police car in a ruined, empty city.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) puts her inside the quarantined city with Jill Valentine, Carlos Olivera and Terri Morales. They agree to find Angela Ashford, the daughter of Dr. Ashford, in return for a safe route out. Umbrella releases Nemesis to hunt the survivors, and a nuclear warhead destroys the city. Alice wakes in an Umbrella lab and learns from Dr. Isaacs that her escape was part of the plan.

In Resident Evil: Extinction (2007), directed by Russell Mulcahy, the T-virus has turned most of the world into desert. The real Alice follows a notebook toward a rumored safe region in Alaska, and she saves Claire's convoy from infected crows with telekinetic powers. She later breaks free of Umbrella's remote control and lures a mutated Isaacs into a replica of the Hive's laser corridor. The film ends in Tokyo, where Alice appears at Wesker's executive meeting.

Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010), the series' first 3D instalment, opens with Alice losing her powers to the infected Albert Wesker. She finds Claire in Alaska, then flies with her to a prison in Los Angeles, where they free Chris Redfield and face a huge axe wielding executioner. The safe haven Arcadia is an Umbrella trap, and Alice defeats Wesker aboard the ship.

Alice in Resident Evil: Retribution (2012) is captured after Jill Valentine, under Umbrella's mind control, leads the assault. She wakes as a suburban housewife with a daughter named Becky, a simulation that collapses into an outbreak. The real Alice is held in an underwater Umbrella base in Kamchatka, where she meets Ada Wong and is rescued by a team led by Leon Kennedy. She frees Jill by removing the control device, and Wesker restores her powers at the White House.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter reached US theaters in January 2017 after opening in Japan in December 2016. Alice is sent back to the Hive, learns that the Isaacs she killed earlier was a clone, and discovers that she is a clone of Alicia Marcus, the daughter of Umbrella's founder.

Alice's Allies, Enemies and Clones

Alice's most important relationships are with the people Umbrella has used against her, and several of them are tied to her own origin. The clearest case is Matt, the cop she meets in the Hive in the first film. Umbrella marks him for the Nemesis Program, and in Apocalypse she stops fighting Nemesis the moment she realizes he is Matt.

Jill Valentine, played by Sienna Guillory in Apocalypse, Afterlife and Retribution, moves from ally to Umbrella's mind controlled weapon and back again. Claire Redfield, played by Ali Larter in Extinction, Afterlife and The Final Chapter, is the friend Alice keeps finding in worse and worse circumstances. Carlos Olivera, played by Oded Fehr, is another ally, and his death in Extinction is one of the series' sacrifices.

On the opposing side, Albert Wesker and Dr. Isaacs, played by Iain Glen in three of the films, are the enemies who matter most. Wesker takes her powers in Afterlife and returns them in Retribution, which makes him a rare villain who also acts as a supplier. The Red Queen, the Hive's computer, is more complicated: in The Final Chapter she gives Alice Alicia's childhood memories, and Ever Anderson is credited as Young Alicia / Red Queen.

The film that reframes everything is The Final Chapter. Dr. Isaacs reveals that Alice is a clone of Alicia Marcus, the daughter of Umbrella's founder, Dr. James Marcus. Alice therefore shares a face with the woman who opposed Isaacs's plan to wipe out humanity. In my opinion, it also recasts the clones in Extinction and the copies of her allies in Retribution as part of a pattern rather than one off tricks.

In Retribution she also meets Ada Wong in the Kamchatka base, and a rescue team led by Leon Kennedy comes to get her out.

What Happens to Alice at the End of the Series?Spoilers

Alice survives the sixth and last film of her run, and she leaves it holding something she lacked in 2002: a childhood. Late in The Final Chapter, a grenade kills Dr. Isaacs, but he comes back and takes her prisoner. Then a second Isaacs clone, convinced he is the genuine article, kills the original before the undead devour him.

With the zombies closing in, Alice sets off the antivirus. It wipes out the infected around her, and she blacks out. Wesker, meanwhile, drops his deadman's switch and takes himself, Alicia, the Hive and the sleeping elite with him.

She lives because the antivirus cleared the T-virus only from her own body. Afterward the Red Queen hands her Alicia's childhood memories, which finally gives Alice a past and a fuller sense of who she is. The cure needs years to spread across the world, and she vows to keep fighting the undead until it does. No later film picks up her thread, since the 2021 reboot and Resident Evil (2026) both leave her out.

Best Alice Moments, Picked by a Fan

In my opinion, the strongest Alice scenes are the ones where the film trusts a plain idea over a big one. Perhaps the best is the end of Resident Evil (2002): she wakes on a hospital table, walks out of Raccoon City Hospital, and takes a shotgun from a police car in a city with nobody in it. It is a quiet image, and it promises a sequel better than any speech could.

The Apocalypse fight with Nemesis deserves a place for a different reason. Alice beats him, then stops when she realizes he is Matt. Did Nemesis recognize her? The film shows him turning on Major Cain's troops and dying to protect her, and it could be argued that this is as close to recognition as a monster gets. It is also a better payoff for the Matt storyline than a simple win would have been.

In Extinction, the infected crows sequence works as a set piece because Alice solves it with a power the audience has not yet seen. Her trap for the mutated Isaacs, in a replica of the Hive's laser corridor, is a clever callback to the first film's most memorable death trap.

For Retribution, I would pick the suburban housewife opening. Alice with a husband and a deaf daughter named Becky is a more unsettling idea than any monster, because the film lets you believe it for a while before the outbreak arrives.
