Albert Wesker Resident Evil Story Arc, Film by FilmSpoilers

Wesker's arc in the Anderson films runs from a distant boardroom threat to a hands on enemy, and then to a very final exit. In Extinction he is the person Dr. Isaacs answers to, and Isaacs breeds a new kind of zombie and sends it to ambush the convoy against Wesker's orders. The film closes in Tokyo, where Wesker is told the North American facility is lost and Alice appears at the executive meeting to promise that she and her clones are coming for him.

Afterlife makes the fight personal. After a raid on Umbrella's underground base in Tokyo, Alice loses her powers to Wesker, who is infected with the T-virus. Six months later she tracks the Arcadia broadcast north, and the ship turns out to be an Umbrella trap. Alice fights Wesker aboard it and defeats him, but he escapes by parachute.

Retribution flips his position. Wesker appears on a screen to tell the imprisoned Alice that the Red Queen AI now controls Umbrella, so he wants her help. Ada Wong is introduced as a former agent of his. The survivors reach his fortified base at the White House, where he restores Alice's powers with a new strain of virus and tells her the Red Queen is out to wipe out humanity.

The Final Chapter turns on that alliance. Alice wakes in the ruined White House after Wesker betrays her. Earlier, in the flashback, Dr. Isaacs has Wesker kill the company founder James Marcus. In the present, Wesker releases mutated dogs inside the Hive, captures Claire Redfield, and is fired by Alicia Marcus.

Welcome to Raccoon City sets Wesker in 1998. He is one of the police special team sent to the Spencer Mansion, and turns out to be working secretly for another side, after the virus created by William Birkin.

Who Does Albert Wesker Work With, and Against?

Wesker's closest tie in the films is to Alice, because almost every scene he plays is a scene about her. He takes her powers in Afterlife, gives them back in Retribution, and betrays her in The Final Chapter.

Inside Umbrella, his key relationship is with Dr. Isaacs. In Extinction, Isaacs disobeys Wesker's orders. In The Final Chapter, Isaacs adopts Alicia, takes control of the company and has Wesker kill Marcus. In the Hive, Wesker releases mutated dogs that kill Christian, and then Alicia Marcus fires him and the Red Queen crushes his leg in a door.

The Red Queen matters as well. In Retribution, Wesker says the Red Queen controls Umbrella, which is his reason for approaching Alice. Ada Wong is a former agent of his, and Jill Valentine fights under Umbrella's mind control during that run. On the other side of the ledger, Claire Redfield is his captive in The Final Chapter, and Chris Redfield appears alongside Wesker in Welcome to Raccoon City as part of the same police team.

In Welcome to Raccoon City, his rivals are William Birkin and his family, whom he clashes with in the underground lab. His last scene links him to Ada Wong, who gives him sunglasses after he wakes in a body bag. See also Alice, Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield.

Is Albert Wesker Alive at the End?Spoilers

In the Anderson films Wesker dies in The Final Chapter, when he drops his deadman's switch and destroys himself, Alicia Marcus, the Hive and the sleeping elite inside it. The detonation follows a bad stretch for him: the Red Queen has crushed his leg in a door, Alicia has fired him, and Isaacs's plan has fallen apart around him. Alice survives because the antivirus only cleared the T-virus from her own body.

Wesker gets a different outcome in Welcome to Raccoon City. He is still alive at the end, and the post credit scene shows him waking in a body bag, unable to see, until a woman gives him sunglasses and introduces herself as Ada Wong. The film does not say what he does next.

So, whether Wesker is alive depends on which run you mean. Resident Evil 5 and the other games belong to Capcom's own continuity, and the films do not follow them.

Best Albert Wesker Moments: My Picks

In my opinion, Wesker works best in short, sharp bursts, and the films give him few of them. My first pick is the end of Extinction, where he sits at a Tokyo meeting and hears the North American base is lost. It could be argued that Alice walking in is the better beat, but I like that Wesker learns the base is gone before she appears.

Second, the Arcadia fight in Afterlife (2010). Shawn Roberts gets a proper physical showdown with Milla Jovovich, and the parachute exit gives him a villain's escape that the series could have played with more. Third, his appearance on the screen in Retribution, when he offers Alice a deal. It is the one time in the Anderson run that Wesker is on her side, and it makes the later betrayal land, which is something the series does well.

Fourth, the self destruct in The Final Chapter. Paradoxically, the most satisfying thing he does is also the most final, and it closes his arc more neatly than the series closes most of its threads. Finally, Tom Hopper's brief sunglasses reveal at the end of Welcome to Raccoon City, a short post credit scene that does more with the character than most of the film around it. If you only have time for one, start with Afterlife, then follow the arc through resident evil movies in order.
