The original actors in Resident Evil (2002). Resident Evil (2002), directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, bills Jovovich first as Alice and Michelle Rodriguez second as Rain, with Eric Mabius as Matt, James Purefoy as Spence, Martin Crewes as Kaplan and Colin Salmon as One. If you are asking who the girl in the first Resident Evil is, the answer is Alice, although Rodriguez's Rain is the other major female role near the top of the billing. Heike Makatsch plays Lisa, and Pasquale Aleardi plays J.D.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004). Resident Evil: Apocalypse, directed by Alexander Witt, brings in Sienna Guillory as Jill Valentine and Oded Fehr as Carlos Olivera. Thomas Kretschmann plays Major Cain, Sophie Vavasseur plays Angie Ashford, Jared Harris plays Dr. Ashford, and Mike Epps plays L.J. Iain Glen appears as Dr. Isaacs, and Matthew G. Taylor plays Nemesis, the Umbrella supersoldier who hunts the survivors through Raccoon City.

Resident Evil: Extinction (2007). Resident Evil: Extinction, directed by Russell Mulcahy, moves the story into a desert world and adds Ali Larter as Claire. Ashanti plays Betty, Christopher Egan plays Mikey, Spencer Locke plays K-Mart, Matthew Marsden plays Slater, Linden Ashby plays Chase, and Jason O'Mara plays Albert Wesker. Fehr, Glen and Epps return from the previous film.

Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010) and Retribution (2012). Resident Evil: Afterlife has Anderson back in the director's chair, with Larter as Claire Redfield, Kim Coates as Bennett, Shawn Roberts as Wesker, Boris Kodjoe as Luther and Wentworth Miller as Chris Redfield. Guillory returns as Jill, and Sergio Peris-Mencheta plays Angel. Resident Evil: Retribution is the busiest ensemble of the run: Li Bingbing as Ada Wong, Johann Urb as Leon S. Kennedy, Kevin Durand as Barry Burton, and Rodriguez back as Rain, alongside Aryana Engineer as Becky.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016 and 2017). Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, directed by Anderson, premiered in Tokyo in December 2016 and reached US theaters in January 2017. Jovovich is credited as Alice / Alicia Marcus, with Glen as Dr. Isaacs, Larter as Claire Redfield, Roberts as Wesker, Ruby Rose as Abigail, Eoin Macken as Doc, Fraser James as Razor, William Levy as Christian, Rola as Cobalt and Lee Joon-gi as Commander Chu. Ever Anderson plays Young Alicia / Red Queen, and Mark Simpson plays James Marcus.

The 2021 reboot. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, directed by Johannes Roberts, reached US theaters in November 2021 and UK and Australian theaters in December 2021, so anyone looking for the 2022 cast is most likely after this film. Kaya Scodelario plays Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen plays Jill Valentine, Robbie Amell plays Chris Redfield, Tom Hopper plays Albert Wesker, Avan Jogia plays Leon Kennedy and Lily Gao plays Ada Wong. Donal Logue plays Chief Irons, Neal McDonough plays William Birkin, and Marina Mazepa plays Lisa Trevor.

The new Resident Evil cast (2026). Resident Evil (2026), directed by Zach Cregger, is the newest film, and none of its billed leads appear in the earlier movies. Austin Abrams plays Bryan, a medical courier sent to Raccoon City General Hospital on a snowy night. Paul Walter Hauser plays Paul, Kali Reis plays Maxine, and Zach Cherry plays Carl. Johnno Wilson plays Officer Wilson, Shaun W. Loeser plays Puker, Emily Piggford plays Dr. Maria Stokes, and Griffin Newman plays Wade. Cregger voices the Intercom, and Sara Paxton voices Michelle. The roles these actors play are covered in Resident Evil characters.

Who Directed the Resident Evil Movies?

Paul W. S. Anderson directed four of the eight live action Resident Evil films: Resident Evil (2002), Afterlife (2010), Retribution (2012) and The Final Chapter (2017 in the US). He is also credited as writer and producer on Retribution, according to The Numbers. The other four each have a different director: Alexander Witt made Apocalypse (2004), Russell Mulcahy made Extinction (2007), Johannes Roberts made Welcome to Raccoon City (2021), and Zach Cregger made Resident Evil (2026).

The split matters at the box office. According to Box Office Mojo, The Final Chapter took about $312 million worldwide and Afterlife about $300 million, while Witt's Apocalypse made about $129 million and Mulcahy's Extinction about $148 million. Roberts's 2021 film earned about $42 million worldwide on a $25 million budget. Cregger's film has reached about $400 million worldwide on a $75 million budget, according to The Numbers. The grosses for every film are broken down in Resident Evil box office.

Behind the camera on the 2026 film, Cregger is credited as director, writer and producer, with Shay Hatten as co-writer. Producers include Robert Kulzer, Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, Victor Hadida, Carter Swan and Asad Qizilbash. Variety reported in March 2025 that Sony, through Columbia, would release the film domestically on September 18, 2026, with Constantin co-financing. TheWrap later reported that TriStar Pictures, Constantin Film and Davis Films shared the budget.

Each film also had its own composer. Marilyn Manson is credited on Resident Evil (2002), Jeff Danna on Apocalypse, Charlie Clouser on Extinction, tomandandy on Afterlife, Tom Hajdu on Retribution, Paul Haslinger on The Final Chapter, Mark Korven on Welcome to Raccoon City, and Hays Holladay and Ryan Holladay on the 2026 film. Songs and albums are covered in Resident Evil soundtrack.

Who Returned and Who Was Recast Across the Resident Evil Movies?

Milla Jovovich is top billed as Alice in all six films of her run, and every other role was either carried by a smaller group of returnees or handed to a new actor. In my opinion, that is the clearest way to read the series: Jovovich anchors the saga while the supporting roles pass between actors around her.

The returning list is short and specific. Oded Fehr plays Carlos in Apocalypse and Extinction, and is credited as Todd / Carlos in Retribution. Ali Larter plays Claire in Extinction, Afterlife and The Final Chapter. Sienna Guillory plays Jill Valentine in Apocalypse, Afterlife and Retribution. Iain Glen plays Dr. Isaacs in Apocalypse, Extinction and The Final Chapter. Michelle Rodriguez comes back as Rain in Retribution, ten years after Resident Evil (2002), and Colin Salmon returns as One in the same film. Mike Epps (L.J.) and Spencer Locke (K-Mart) each appear in two films.

Wesker is the clearest recast. Jason O'Mara plays Albert Wesker in Extinction, Shawn Roberts takes over for Afterlife, Retribution and The Final Chapter, and Tom Hopper plays him in the 2021 reboot. It could be argued that Roberts has the strongest claim to the role in this saga simply because three films gave him room to build it. Larter's Claire and Guillory's Jill follow a similar pattern, since each carries a character across three films.

The 2021 film recasts every returning character from scratch: Kaya Scodelario for Claire, Hannah John-Kamen for Jill, Robbie Amell for Chris Redfield (who was Wentworth Miller in Afterlife), Avan Jogia for Leon (Johann Urb in Retribution) and Lily Gao for Ada Wong (Li Bingbing in Retribution). Paradoxically, the 2026 film recasts nobody, because its billed cast of Austin Abrams, Paul Walter Hauser, Kali Reis and Zach Cherry plays new characters. If you want the story order before the casting history, start with Resident Evil movies in order.
