Scream 6 Plot: What Is the Setup?

Scream VI (2023), directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, picks up one year after the Woodsboro killings of Scream (2022) and carries the story to New York City. The film opens with a film studies professor named Laura Crane, played by Samara Weaving, being murdered by a student in a Ghostface costume. A second Ghostface then kills that student's roommate and the student himself, so within the first minutes the film tells you that more than one person may be wearing the mask.

Sisters Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera) and Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega) have moved to the city to start over. They live with the twins Mindy Meeks-Martin and Chad Meeks-Martin and with their new friends Quinn, Anika and Ethan. A fresh string of Ghostface attacks begins to target the group, and Sam is again viewed with suspicion.

Gale Weathers, now a bestselling author, and Kirby Reed, now an FBI agent, are pulled back in as the killings spread across the city. If you are new to the saga, the Scream movies in order page shows where this film sits, and the Scream timeline places it a year after the previous film.

What Songs Are in Scream VI?

Brian Tyler composed the score for Scream VI (2023), and the 38 track album "Scream VI: Music from the Motion Picture" was released by Paramount Music on March 10, 2023.

The film also leans on a dozen licensed songs, and "Still Alive" by Demi Lovato is the one written for it. It carries over the final moments of the film and into the end credits.

The rest are tied to particular scenes. "In My Head" by Mike Shinoda and Kailee Morgue plays over the title sequence after Ghostface kills Jason. "Red Right Hand" by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds sits under Mindy's campus conversation with friends about a film sequel. "Blow the Whistle" by Too $hort starts a party sequence while Mindy and Anika reminisce, and at a fraternity party "Luchini AKA This Is It" by Camp Lo plays as Chad takes a shot with Ethan. "Menthol" by Jean Dawson and Mac DeMarco runs while Tara agrees to visit Frankie's room and Anika voices her disapproval. "October Passed Me By" by girl in red follows Sam out of a therapist's office into a transition scene, and "Same Squad" by P-Lo plays from a phone as Sam rides the subway.

Four more songs round out the list:

  • "when the party's over" by Billie Eilish
  • "Walkin" by Denzel Curry
  • "You Have Stolen My Heart" by Brian Fallon
  • "I Am Controlled By Your Love" by Helene Smith

The wider track lists for every film are on the Scream soundtrack page.

Scream 6 Plot Explained in FullSpoilers

The full plot of Scream 6 follows two Ghostface killers through the opening, then a larger conspiracy that ends in an abandoned theater. The opening murders of the professor and the two students are carried out by two different people in Ghostface masks, which sets up the film's habit of showing more than one killer at once.

In New York, Sam and Tara Carpenter try to move on while living with Mindy, Chad, Quinn, Anika and Ethan. Ghostface starts hunting the group, and the killer also targets a therapist who knew Sam. Sam herself is blamed for some of the crimes. Gale Weathers joins the survivors and leads them to a hidden, abandoned theater that works as a shrine, filled with relics from past Ghostface killers.

The violence is staged in public places. Gale is attacked in her apartment, and Mindy is stabbed on a crowded train, while Quinn and Anika are lost along the way. At the theater the group sets a trap, and the killers are exposed.

Quinn's father, a police detective named Wayne Bailey, planned everything, with Ethan and a still living Quinn helping him. They want revenge on Sam for killing Richie, who was their brother. In the fight, Tara stabs Ethan, Sam kills Quinn, and Sam finishes Wayne while wearing the Ghostface costume that once belonged to her own father. Kirby arrives and ends Ethan by smashing a television over his head.

The survivors recover, Sam gives Tara more freedom, and Tara agrees to go to therapy. Sam drops her father's mask and walks off into the city with Tara and Danny Brackett.

Paramount moved the date up from March 31 to March 10, as Deadline reported in November 2022.

At the box office, Box Office Mojo lists $108 million domestic and $58 million international, for about $167 million worldwide on a $35 million budget. That total beat the worldwide gross of Scream (2022). The full series comparison is on the Scream box office page.

Scream 6 Ending Explained: The Killers and the ShrineSpoilers

The ending of Scream 6 reveals Wayne Bailey as the mastermind, with his children Ethan and Quinn helping him take revenge for the death of Richie. Sam, Tara and Kirby kill all three in the shrine theater, with Sam using her late father's Ghostface costume against Wayne. Most of the core group survives, and Sam and Tara leave on better terms.

Why does it work? In my opinion, the motive is the strongest part of the film. The killers want revenge on Sam for killing Richie, so a family seeking payback gives the sequel a reason for a second pair of masks, and it explains why the plan targets Sam rather than random students. It could be argued that the shrine of relics is a little too convenient, since a hidden museum of past killers does a lot of the explaining for the audience, but it is also the most memorable set piece, a place where the series looks at its own history.

The quiet beat afterward matters too. Tara agrees to go to therapy, Sam eases off her protectiveness, and Sam throws away her father's mask as the sisters head back into New York together. That choice closes a thread the franchise has carried since Scream (1996), where the past stays attached to its survivors. It is also the answer to a fair question, which is whether Sam would keep wearing the legacy. She does not.

The film then closes on this note of the survivors moving forward, which is why the post credit moment lands as a joke rather than a sting.

Does Scream 6 Have a Post Credit Scene?Spoilers

Scream VI has one short moment after the credits begin to roll: Mindy Meeks-Martin turns to her friends and says that not every movie needs a post credit scene. There is no teaser for a sequel and no new reveal, so you can leave the theater (or switch off the stream) without missing story. In my opinion, the gag suits a film that spends its running time on the rules of sequels, and it lets Jasmin Savoy Brown close the film in the same voice she has used since Scream (2022). If you want the reasoning behind Mindy's habit of lecturing the group, the Scream rules page covers it.

Where Is Scream 6 Set?

Scream VI is set in New York City, which moves the series away from its usual Woodsboro setting. The story plays out in the apartment the group shares, on a crowded train, in Gale Weathers' apartment and in a hidden, abandoned theater that works as a shrine to past Ghostface killers.

The move has precedent within the saga, because Scream 2 follows Sidney to Windsor College in Ohio and Scream 3 goes to Hollywood. The difference is scale, since the New York attacks happen in public and the setting is part of the threat. Woodsboro is back as the setting for Scream 7.

Scream 6 Trivia

Scream VI is the first Scream film without Neve Campbell, who announced in June 2022 that she would not return as Sidney Prescott after what was widely described as a salary dispute. She returns in Scream 7 as Sidney Evans.

The release date moved from March 31 to March 10, 2023, as Deadline reported in November 2022. Budget figures vary by source, with Box Office Mojo listing $35 million and The Numbers listing $33 million.

The score is by Brian Tyler with Sven Faulconer, and the Paramount Music album lists 38 tracks. Demi Lovato's Still Alive was the lead single tied to the film, co-written and produced by Mike Shinoda.

The film runs 123 minutes, longer than Scream (1996) at 112 minutes and Scream (2022) at 114 minutes. Its worldwide gross of about $167 million is higher than Scream (2022) and Scream 4. For where all seven films rank, see Scream movies ranked, or return to the Scream movies hub. If you want to know what comes after, Scream 8 is in development.
