Who Is Sam Carpenter in Scream?

Sam Carpenter is the central final girl of the saga's second era, introduced in Scream (2022), directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, and played by Melissa Barrera. She is billed first in both Scream (2022) and Scream VI, the clearest sign that the series moved its center of gravity from Sidney to her.

She is the estranged older sister of Tara Carpenter, and she returns to Woodsboro with her boyfriend Richie after a new Ghostface attacks Tara. What separates her from earlier survivors is a secret: she is the daughter of Billy Loomis, the killer from Scream (1996), played by Skeet Ulrich. In Scream (2022) she is also troubled by visions of Billy.

That parentage drives her stories. Sidney Prescott was hunted because of what happened to her mother, whereas Sam is suspected because of what her father was, and the films keep asking whether blood decides anything. If you want the wider cast around her, the scream characters page lists everyone who matters.

Sam Carpenter's Story Arc Across the FilmsSpoilers

Sam's arc runs through two films, and each one tests her in a different way. In Scream (2022), a new Ghostface stabs Tara, who survives, and Sam comes home carrying a secret she has hidden from her friends. Tara's circle, including the twins Mindy and Chad, becomes the target as the killer picks off people with ties to the old murders. Sheriff Judy Hicks and her son Wes die, and Dewey Riley is stabbed at the hospital and dies. Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers arrive to help.

The group gathers at the house that once belonged to Stu Macher, where Amber shoots Liv and is exposed as a killer alongside Richie. They are fans of the Stab films who wanted to stage real murders to inspire a better sequel, and they planned to frame Sam. Sam kills Richie, and Tara finishes the wounded Amber.

In Scream VI, Sam and Tara have moved to New York City to start over, living with Mindy, Chad, Quinn, Anika and Ethan. A new string of Ghostface attacks targets the group, and Sam is again blamed for some of the crimes. Gale leads the survivors to an abandoned theater that works as a shrine filled with relics from past Ghostface killers. The killers are exposed there: Quinn's father, Detective Wayne Bailey, planned everything with his children Ethan and Quinn, and wanted revenge on Sam for killing Richie, who was their brother.

The fight ends with Tara stabbing Ethan and Sam killing Quinn. Sam then finishes Wayne while wearing the Ghostface costume that once belonged to her own father. Kirby Reed arrives and ends Ethan with a television. Afterward Sam eases off her protectiveness, and Tara agrees to go to therapy.

Who Are Sam Carpenter's Family and Allies?

Sam's closest bond is with her sister, Tara Carpenter, and almost every choice she makes in both films is about keeping Tara alive. Tara is played by Jenna Ortega, and in both Scream (2022) and Scream VI the sisters are billed first (Sam) and second (Tara).

Her father is Billy Loomis, so she is tied to the original saga without ever having lived through the events of 1996. Her boyfriend Richie Kirsch, played by Jack Quaid, turns out to be a killer in Scream (2022), and Sam kills him. That act then becomes the motive for the killers of Scream VI.

Among her allies, Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin stand beside her in both films. Among the legacy characters, Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers help her in the first film, Gale returns in the second, and Kirby Reed, now an FBI agent, steps in near the end. In New York, Danny Brackett, played by Josh Segarra, walks off into the city with the sisters.

What Happened to Sam Carpenter in Scream?Spoilers

Sam Carpenter survives both of her films, and in Scream VI she drops her father's mask and walks off into New York with Tara and Danny. That is the last the series shows of her, which is why searches for what happened to Samantha usually end here.

She is not among the top billed cast of Scream 7, released on February 27, 2026 and directed by Kevin Williamson, and the film puts Sidney and her daughter Tatum at the center instead. TheWrap reported on the firing of Melissa Barrera from the project. Neither Tara nor Jenna Ortega is among the top billed cast of the film either.

As for what comes next, Scream 8 is reported to be in development at Spyglass, with Lilla and Nora Zuckerman writing, and no cast, director or release date has been announced. Whether Sam or Tara returns is therefore open. If you want to follow the status, the scream 8 trailer page will carry any footage once it exists.

Sam Carpenter's Best Moments

Sam Carpenter's best moment, in my opinion, is the finale of Scream VI, where she fights Wayne Bailey in her father's Ghostface costume. It is the cleanest image the new era has produced, because it turns the series' oldest worry, that Sam might inherit her father's violence, into a choice she makes on her own terms and then walks away from by dropping the mask.

A close second is the reveal in the house that once belonged to Stu Macher in Scream (2022). The set piece works because Amber and Richie planned to frame Sam, so the moment she kills Richie reads as relief rather than triumph. It could be argued that this scene also does the best job of stating the saga's rules for a new audience, since Amber and Richie act as fans who think they know how a good sequel should go.

Third, the quieter scene at the end of Scream VI, when Sam gives Tara more room, matters more than any kill. Perhaps it is the reason Sam works as a lead: she is allowed to change, which is rare in a franchise that so often leaves its survivors in the same place. Ranked against Sidney, Sam is the more guarded final girl, and I would put her below Sidney but ahead of most of the supporting survivors. For the full order, see scream movies ranked.
