Who Is Kirby Reed in Scream?

Kirby Reed is a friend of Jill Roberts in scream 4 (2011), directed by Wes Craven, and a grown FBI agent by scream 6 (2023), directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Hayden Panettiere plays her in both films and is billed fifth in Scream 4 and eleventh in Scream VI. The credits give her one name only, Kirby Reed.

In Scream 4 she belongs to the circle around Jill, the cousin of Sidney Prescott. The film is set fifteen years after the original Woodsboro murders, when Sidney returns to town on her book tour and a new Ghostface starts killing local girls. Kirby is one of the teenagers caught up in the threatening phone calls, and she is present when Jill's friend Olivia is murdered.

That makes her a useful marker of how the saga ages. Ghostface has no powers, only a phone, a mask and a knife, so in my opinion a character can only grow by surviving and showing up again. Kirby lives through the fourth film and returns in the sixth, which makes her a link between the original ensemble era and the newer group around the Carpenter sisters. Kirby Reed's Story Arc From Scream 4 to Scream VISpoilers

Kirby's arc runs across two films twelve years apart, and it starts with her being forced to watch. In Scream 4, Jill's friend Olivia is murdered while Jill and Kirby look on, after two local girls have already been killed during the anniversary week. Sidney fights off the attacker until deputies arrive, and the town spends the next days waiting for the next call.

The film then closes around Kirby's own party. Robbie is killed after the party, and Kirby is stabbed by Charlie, who is revealed to be one of the two killers. The second Ghostface is Jill, who explains that she was jealous of Sidney's fame and wanted to become the famous sole survivor. Jill had planned to frame her ex boyfriend Trevor, killed him, then killed Charlie, and wounded herself to look like a victim. In the hospital finale Sidney shocks Jill with a defibrillator and shoots her, and reporters outside wrongly call Jill a hero. Kirby survives, since she is back in the sixth film.

Scream VI picks her up as an FBI agent. Gale Weathers, now a bestselling author, and Kirby are both pulled back in as the killings spread across New York. Gale leads the survivors to a hidden, abandoned theater that serves as a shrine of relics from past Ghostface killers. In the final fight Wayne Bailey, a police detective, is revealed as the mastermind, with his children Ethan and Quinn helping him seek revenge for Richie, who was their brother. Tara stabs Ethan, Sam kills Quinn, and Kirby arrives and ends Ethan by smashing a television over his head. Sam then finishes Wayne in her father's old Ghostface costume.

Between those two appearances sits scream 2022, in which Kirby has no billed role. How the saga got from one film to the other is laid out on the scream timeline.

Kirby Reed's Relationships and Allies

Kirby's closest tie in Scream 4 is Jill Roberts, played by Emma Roberts, who is revealed as one of the killers and dies at Sidney's hands. The friend standing next to Kirby when Olivia is killed turns out to be one of the people running the game.

She is also connected to Olivia, who dies in front of her, and to Robbie, who is killed after her party. Charlie, the other killer in Scream 4, is the person who stabs her. Sidney Prescott is Jill's cousin and the main survivor of that film, and Dewey and Gale are the veterans working the case around the teenagers.

In Scream VI her closest link is gale weathers, who is pulled back in alongside her. The two are the legacy survivors on the ground in New York, working next to sam carpenter and tara carpenter. Her blow on Ethan lands in the middle of the fight at the shrine. Wayne, Ethan and Quinn are the opposition she faces, and the film presents them as a father and his children rather than as a single ghostface identity. The full list of masked killers is on the ghostface killers page.

Did Kirby Reed Die? Her Fate in Scream 4 and Scream VISpoilers

Kirby Reed does not die in either film in which she appears. She is stabbed by Charlie in Scream 4 and survives, and she is alive at the end of Scream VI after helping to kill Ethan in the shrine theater. Most of the core group survives that finale, and the sisters leave the theater on better terms, with Tara agreeing to therapy and Sam dropping her father's mask.

That answers the common search for Kirby Reed's death within the story. Panettiere is not among the top 15 billed cast of scream 7 (2026), and that film centers on Sidney's daughter Tatum, so Kirby has no sourced role there. The same goes for Scream (2022), also searched as Scream 5, where the story follows Tara and Sam Carpenter and the top billed cast does not list her.

As for what comes next, scream 8 is in development at Spyglass. HollywoodLife (October 2026) reports that no director, cast or release date has been announced, and Collider (November 2026) says an official date has yet to be announced. No character is confirmed, so any return for Kirby is unreported.

Kirby Reed's Best Moments

In my opinion, Kirby's strongest scene in Scream 4 is the one where she has to stand and watch Olivia die next to Jill. It is the point where the film stops being a game of film trivia and starts to feel like a real threat, and knowing Jill is standing beside her makes it play very differently on a second viewing. It could be argued that it is the most efficient bit of foreshadowing in the movie.

The party night, ending in the stabbing by Charlie, is the other one I would pick. It gives the character a cost that she carries into the sixth film, and a survivor with a visible cost is worth more to a franchise than one who walks away clean.

The television smash in Scream VI is the payoff. Kirby arrives late and finishes Ethan with a single blow, a legacy survivor stepping into the fight at the right moment. I would also call it a clever use of a prop in a film full of Ghostface relics, because the weapon is a television rather than a knife.
