Dark Phoenix Trailer
What Is Dark Phoenix About?
Dark Phoenix follows Jean Grey, the telekinetic X-Men student played by Sophie Turner, as a cosmic force pushes her powers beyond anything Charles Xavier's team can control. The story opens in 1975, when a young Jean causes a car crash with her telekinetic powers and the accident kills her parents. Charles Xavier takes her in and raises her at his school for mutants.
By 1992 the X-Men are celebrated heroes, and the President calls on them to rescue the crew of a damaged space shuttle. During the rescue Jean absorbs a huge cosmic energy force. Back on Earth her powers grow wildly, and her mind starts to unravel.
That puts the film nine years after X-Men: Apocalypse, which opens in 1983, and it is the ninth film in chronological order. Jean has been on screen before: Famke Janssen played her in X-Men (2000), X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand, where she returned with huge and unstable power. This film retells that story with the younger cast.
As for the title, the cast list credits Turner as Jean Grey / Dark Phoenix, and the name describes what the cosmic force turns her into. For the character across the saga, see Jean Grey.

What Songs Are in Dark Phoenix?
Hans Zimmer composed the score for Dark Phoenix (2019), and the 10 track album "Dark Phoenix: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" was released by Hollywood Records on May 8, 2020. It is a score album, so the orchestral music is what the release collects, and the songs in the film sit alongside it.
Most of the song moments come in the 1975 opening, where a family car radio sets the scene before young Jean Grey's powers cause the crash. "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" by Glen Campbell is the first song on the radio. Jean then picks "Werewolves of London" by Warren Zevon in response. As the radio is channel-surfed, "Killer Queen" by Queen and "My Baby Loves Lovin'" by White Plains also play.
The one song written for the film is "Dazzler's campfire song" by Odessa. Early in the film, the mutant Dazzler, played by Halston Sage, sings it in a campfire scene.

Dark Phoenix Plot Summary: What Happens in the Whole Film?Spoilers
The full story of Dark Phoenix turns on Jean's anger at Xavier, the death of Raven and an alien offer that hides a plan to take over Earth. After the shuttle rescue, Jean learns that Xavier hid the truth about her past and about what happened to her mother, and she lashes out. In one violent episode she accidentally kills Raven, the shapeshifter played by Jennifer Lawrence. Hank McCoy blames Jean for the death and joins Magneto, who wants to hunt her down.
Vuk, a shapeshifting alien leader played by Jessica Chastain, offers Jean help with the force. In truth, Vuk wants to use Jean's power to remake Earth for her own people, the D'Bari. The X-Men and Magneto's group clash with Jean, and the fighting reaches New York. Xavier manages to bring back part of Jean's old self, and the mutants then join forces against the D'Bari as the fight moves onto a train.
Jean forgives Xavier and flies into space with Vuk. There she kills Vuk and burns away as a being of energy shaped like a phoenix. The school is later renamed in her honor, and Xavier steps back from leading it.
Dark Phoenix Release Date, Premiere and Box Office: Hit or Flop?
Dark Phoenix premiered on June 4, 2019 at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, and opened in US theaters on June 7, 2019. The UK release followed on June 5 and Australia on June 6, according to Box Office Mojo, and the film carries a PG-13 rating in the US, 12A in the UK and M in Australia.
By the numbers, Dark Phoenix was the weakest earner of the seven main Fox X-Men films. It took $65.8 million domestic and $186.6 million international, for $252 million worldwide on a $200 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. Every earlier main film made more worldwide, from X-Men (2000) up to Days of Future Past, and its domestic gross is the lowest of the seven. Among the spin-offs, only The New Mutants earned less worldwide. So, in my opinion, "flop" is a fair word for the run, though a budget and a gross do not give a full profit and loss account. The full table is on the X-Men box office page.
As for streaming, Disney Plus carries Dark Phoenix in the US, UK and Australia, according to JustWatch data via TMDB checked on November 3, 2026. Netflix is not among the listed services, and the US list also shows fuboTV, YouTube TV and FXNow, plus rental and purchase options. See where to watch X-Men for every film by country.
Dark Phoenix Ending Explained: Does Jean Grey Come Back?Spoilers
Jean Grey does not come back within Dark Phoenix. She forgives Xavier, flies into space with Vuk, kills her, and then takes the form of a flaming phoenix. Afterward the school is renamed the Jean Grey School and Xavier retires. He meets Magneto in Paris for a game of chess, they reconcile, and a phoenix shape appears in the sky. The ending closes the Fox X-Men series and sets up no direct sequel, so there is no Dark Phoenix 2 in the story.
Here is what I make of it, as opinion. The phoenix shape in the Paris sky reads to me as a memorial image, a sign that Jean lives on as energy rather than as a person, and not a promise of a return. The stronger choice is that Jean ends Vuk by her own decision, after Xavier brings back part of her old self, rather than being stopped by someone else. In my view that is a clearer ending for the character than the one in The Last Stand, where Jean returns with huge and unstable power and the story is carried by the events around her.
It could be argued that the chess scene does the most work for the wider saga. Xavier and Magneto have been rivals and friends since First Class, and the quiet reconciliation gives the McAvoy and Fassbender pairing a proper goodbye. That being said, Raven's death, which sets the middle of the film in motion, is never answered by a scene as warm, so the ending resolves the older friendship more than the loss that caused the conflict.
If you want the next stop after this film, a new X-Men movie is coming from Marvel Studios, a separate project from the Fox films.
Where Was Dark Phoenix Filmed?
Dark Phoenix was filmed in Montreal, Canada, where all principal shooting took place. It was the third X-Men film to shoot in and around the city, according to Screen Global Production.
Much of the film was built rather than found. The suburban street where Jean grew up was built as a set on a gravel field, and part of New York's Fifth Avenue was built on a sound stage. The fictional island of Genosha was built as a set about an hour outside Montreal. A real subway car was also mounted on a rig to crash through a wall.

FAQs
Why was Dark Phoenix the last movie?
Dark Phoenix closed the Fox X-Men series, and it was the weakest earner of the seven main films: $252 million worldwide on a $200 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. Those figures are context, not a stated reason. The next X-Men film is a separate Marvel Studios project, dated for May 5, 2028 in US theaters and directed by Jake Schreier, according to TheWrap.
Is Dark Phoenix hit or flop?
By its numbers, Dark Phoenix earned less than any other main Fox X-Men film. It took $65.8 million domestic and $252 million worldwide on a $200 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. Costs beyond the budget are not part of those figures, so the safest description is that it fell well short of the saga's earlier results.
Is Dark Phoenix worth watching?
It depends on what you want from it. It rewards viewers who have followed the McAvoy and Fassbender films, it gives Jean Grey her own story, and it ends with Xavier and Magneto reconciling. It is also the final main Fox film, so completists will want it. In my opinion, the chess scene in Paris is the strongest moment.
Who are the actors in the movie Dark Phoenix?
Sophie Turner stars as Jean Grey, with James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy, Tye Sheridan as Scott Summers, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Evan Peters as Quicksilver, Jessica Chastain as Vuk, Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler and Jennifer Lawrence as Raven Darkholme / Mystique.
Does Jean Grey come back to life after Dark Phoenix?
Not in the film. Jean kills Vuk in space and then burns away as a being of energy shaped like a phoenix. The school is renamed in her honor, and a phoenix shape appears in the sky above Paris. The ending sets up no direct sequel, so no scene shows her returning.
Did Raven sleep with Magneto?
No relationship between Raven and Magneto appears in the plot of Dark Phoenix. Raven's storyline ends when Jean accidentally kills her in one violent episode, after which Hank McCoy blames Jean and joins Magneto. The film's reconciliation scene is between Xavier and Magneto over a game of chess in Paris.
