Who Plays Charles Xavier / Professor X?

Who Is Professor X?

Professor X is the code name of Charles Xavier, a powerful telepath who founds a school for young mutants and leads the X-Men, so the two names describe one character. The credits shift between them from film to film: Xavier, Professor X, Professor Charles Xavier, Charles Xavier / Professor X, and simply Charles, with age labels such as Charles Xavier (24 Years) on x men first class.

Two actors carry the role. Patrick Stewart plays the older Xavier in x men 2000, x2 x men united, x men the last stand, x men days of future past and logan 2017. James McAvoy plays the younger Xavier in First Class, Days of Future Past, x men apocalypse and dark phoenix. Days of Future Past is the only film where both appear together, with Stewart billed as Professor X and McAvoy as Charles Xavier.

That makes eleven credited films in all. The two the leads above leave out are x men origins wolverine and deadpool 2, where Xavier sits further down the cast list. He also turns up in the mid credits scene of the wolverine 2013.

What is Professor X's power, and why is he so powerful? His gift is telepathy, the ability to read and reach other minds. In the films he uses Cerebro to extend that reach, and in Apocalypse the villain En Sabah Nur uses Cerebro to speak to minds across the planet and tries to move his own mind into Xavier's body, which says plenty about how valuable that power is. The films also show its limits: in Days of Future Past a drug that lets him walk takes his telepathy away, and in Logan his failing mind makes the same power dangerous to everyone near him. Professor X Story Arc Across the FilmsSpoilers

Xavier's story runs from a young Oxford academic in 1962 to a sick old man in 2029, and the two actors split that span between them. In First Class, set in 1944 and 1962, young Charles takes in the shapeshifter Raven, studies at Oxford, helps CIA agent Moira MacTaggert, and meets Erik Lehnsherr while Erik hunts Sebastian Shaw. The two men recruit young mutants and build Cerebro, and during the Cuban Missile Crisis a stray bullet hits Charles in the spine and leaves him paralyzed. He then turns his family home into a school.

By Days of Future Past, set in 1973, he is broken and hiding from the world, and Wolverine's mind arrives from 2023 to pull him back. In Apocalypse, set in 1983, he is captured by En Sabah Nur, fights him on the mental plane while Magneto and Storm turn on the villain, and afterward restores Moira's memories of him. In Dark Phoenix, set in 1992, he is a celebrated leader, but his decision to hide the truth about Jean Grey's past and her mother's fate helps push her toward catastrophe.

The older Xavier picks up in X-Men (2000), where Mystique sabotages Cerebro and leaves him in a coma. He recovers, visits Magneto in his plastic prison cell, and promises to be there to stop him. In X2 Stryker captures him and tries to use him against mutants, until Storm breaks the hold with a snowstorm in the Cerebro chamber. He ends the film calling on humans and mutants to live together. In The Last Stand Jean Grey, possessed by the Phoenix, destroys him in the struggle, and Logan closes his story in 2029.

In release order the arc starts with Stewart, but in chronological order it starts with McAvoy. If you want that sequencing laid out, the x men timeline and the x men movies in order guide both help.

Who Matters Most to Professor X?

The most important person in Xavier's life is Magneto, Erik Lehnsherr, whom he meets in First Class and who becomes his closest friend and his main opponent. They disagree over whether mutants should live peacefully with humans, and that argument drives every film they share. They are allies again in the bleak future of Days of Future Past, and in Dark Phoenix they reconcile over a game of chess in Paris. See the full profile of magneto.

Raven, later mystique x men, is the nearest thing he has to family. He welcomes her into his home as a child, and in Days of Future Past he persuades her not to kill Bolivar Trask, a choice that erases the Sentinel future. In Dark Phoenix she is accidentally killed by Jean.

Moira MacTaggert, the CIA agent from First Class, is the person whose memory of him he chooses to erase to protect the mutant cause, and whose memories he restores in Apocalypse. Beyond them, Xavier is a teacher and mentor to the X-Men. wolverine x men is the student who stays closest to him through the original films and Logan, and jean gray is the student he fails most painfully. He also trains or leads cyclops x men, storm x men, rogue x men and beast x men, whom the films show in both eras.

What Happens to Professor X? (Death Explained)Spoilers

Professor X dies on screen in Logan, but the films give him several near endings first, and who defeated him depends on which one you count.

In X-Men (2000), Mystique sabotages Cerebro and puts him in a coma, though he recovers. In X-Men: The Last Stand, Jean Grey, possessed by the Phoenix, destroys him in the struggle. A post credits scene then shows Moira MacTaggert visiting a comatose patient who greets her in Professor Xavier's voice, which suggests he survived in some form. The Wolverine shows him alive in its mid credits scene, believed dead and working with Magneto, a bridge into Days of Future Past.

In Logan, set in 2029, an elderly Xavier is ill and hidden near the Mexican border with Logan and Caliban. During a night sheltering with the Munson family, X-24, a savage clone of Logan made by Transigen, attacks and kills Xavier and the Munsons. Logan buries him afterward. That is his final death in the older timeline.

The younger Xavier's story ends differently. In Dark Phoenix he steps back from leading the school after it is renamed the Jean Grey School, then reconciles with Magneto over chess in Paris.

Marvel Studios is now developing its own X-Men film, dated May 5, 2028 in US theaters with Jake Schreier directing. TheWrap reported a D23 cast announcement on August 14, 2026 naming Christopher Abbott, Sadie Sink, Kit Connor, Samara Weaving, Inde Navarrette, Maya Boyd and Adam Driver. None of those names is confirmed as Charles Xavier, and no confirmed report places him in Avengers: Doomsday, so treat any such claim as rumor. The latest on that film sits on the new x men movie page.

Best Professor X Moments (Opinion)

In my opinion, the best Professor X scene is the last one in X-Men (2000), when Stewart visits Magneto in his plastic cell and says he will be there to stop him. It could be argued that this is the whole saga in one exchange: two old friends, one promise each, and no raised voices. Few superhero films let two actors carry the stakes that quietly.

The Cuba finale in First Class comes next. McAvoy has spent the film as the optimist who believes he can talk Erik into peace, and when the stray bullet hits his spine while he tries to stop Erik turning missiles back on the ships, the cost of that optimism lands in one shot. Perhaps it is the franchise's most effective origin for a wheelchair user, because it ties the injury to his ideals rather than to a villain.

Third is Days of Future Past, where Xavier talks Mystique out of the shot at Trask. After two films of arguing with Magneto, it is the one time words beat force, and it is the choice that wipes out the Sentinel future. Last is the Munson house in Logan, which I find hard to rewatch, because the film lets Stewart play a man whose greatest strength has become a danger to the people he loves. If you want to see these films ranked, head to x men movies ranked, and to begin the saga, start with x men movies in order.

Facts

FAQs

Who defeated Professor X?

Several characters get the better of him, depending on the film. Mystique sabotages Cerebro and leaves him in a coma in X-Men (2000), Jean Grey as the Phoenix destroys him in X-Men: The Last Stand, and X-24, the clone of Logan, kills him in Logan.

Is Professor X twin?

No twin appears in the films. The nearest thing to a sibling is Raven, later Mystique, whom he takes in as a child in X-Men: First Class and treats as a sister.

How old is Professor X when he dies?

The films never state his age at death. X-Men: First Class credits him as Charles Xavier (24 Years) in 1962, and Logan, set in 2029, shows him as an elderly man with a failing mind when X-24 kills him.

Did Professor X have a son?

None of the eleven films that credit Xavier shows him with a son. His closest bonds on screen are with Magneto, Raven, Moira MacTaggert and his students at the school.

What is Professor X's power, and why is he so powerful?

His power is telepathy, the ability to read and reach other minds, which he extends with Cerebro. It makes him powerful enough that Apocalypse tries to move his own mind into Xavier's body in X-Men: Apocalypse, and in Logan his failing mind makes the same gift dangerous.

Are Charles Xavier and Professor X the same person?

Yes. Charles Xavier is his name and Professor X is his code name, and the film credits use both, along with versions such as Professor Charles Xavier and Charles Xavier / Professor X. Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy play the older and younger versions.
