Feyd Rautha in Dune: Actor, Story Arc and Fate
Feyd Rautha is the nephew of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, played by Austin Butler in Dune: Part Two (2024) and by Sting in Dune (1984). The credits spell the name Feyd-Rautha in the 2024 film. In Denis Villeneuve's version the Baron replaces Rabban with him and he steps up the Harkonnen attacks on the Fremen, until Paul Atreides kills him in a knife duel.

Feyd Rautha: Who He Is and Who Plays Him
Feyd Rautha is a fighter of House Harkonnen and the nephew of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, the family the Emperor strips of Arrakis at the start of Dune (2021). Two actors have played him, in two separate films.
Austin Butler takes the role in Dune: Part Two (2024), directed by Denis Villeneuve, where he is billed sixth as Feyd-Rautha. Sting plays the part in Dune (1984), directed by David Lynch, where he is billed twelfth. The hyphen is the only difference in the credited spelling. For the wider family picture, see the guide to the Dune houses.
Who is the actor behind the Villeneuve version? TheWrap reported in March 2022 that Butler was in early talks to take the part. The character arrives in the series with the second film only: Dune (2021) does not list him among its top billed cast, and Dave Bautista plays Beast Rabban there, a role he keeps in Part Two. Full credits sit on the Dune cast page.

Feyd-Rautha's Story Arc in Dune: Part Two and Dune (1984)Spoilers
In Dune: Part Two (2024), the Harkonnen nephew enters the story when the Baron replaces Rabban with the more ruthless relative, and he steps up the Harkonnen attacks on the Fremen. This happens while Paul Atreides is still learning the desert, riding a sandworm and raiding the spice harvesters beside Chani. The escalation gives the Harkonnens a face that is sharper than Rabban's, and it pushes Paul toward the war he fears.
The Harkonnen side then collapses quickly. After Paul declares himself the Lisan al Gaib, the Fremen attack with atomic weapons and sandworms and overwhelm the Harkonnens and the Emperor's troops. Paul kills the Baron and Gurney kills Rabban. When Paul demands the throne, Emperor Shaddam sends the nephew to fight in his place, and the arc closes in a knife duel.
Dune (1984) handles the character differently. There he is the Harkonnen champion, and Paul defeats him in a duel as the Fremen strike the Emperor's forces, so he belongs to the climax rather than a long build. That film is a separate adaptation from the Villeneuve films, and it is covered on its own page for dune 1984.
Feyd-Rautha's Relationships: Uncle, Rival and Emperor's Champion
His ties run mainly to power rather than affection: the Baron is his uncle, the Emperor uses him as a champion, and Paul is the man he has to beat. Each tie shifts across the two adaptations, so it helps to take them one at a time.
The Baron is played by Stellan Skarsgård in Part Two and by Kenneth McMillan in Dune (1984). In the 2024 film the Baron replaces Rabban with his more ruthless nephew, then loses his own life to Paul before the duel. Rabban, played by Dave Bautista, is the man the nephew displaces, and Gurney Halleck (Josh Brolin) kills Rabban in the same battle.
The Emperor, played by Christopher Walken in Part Two, sends the Harkonnen fighter against Paul when Paul claims the throne. Paul in turn agrees to marry Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh), a political match that costs him Chani.
Three questions come up often. Was Paul supposed to marry Feyd? No, the marriage Paul accepts is to Irulan. Is Paul related to Feyd-Rautha? The plot outlines of both films present them as opponents and give no family link. Who slept with Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen? The romance in Part Two belongs to Paul and Chani, and the summaries of both films name no partner for him.
How Does Feyd-Rautha Die?Spoilers
He dies at the hands of Paul Atreides in both adaptations, and in both the duel belongs to the climax. The two deaths carry different consequences.
In Dune: Part Two (2024), Paul kills him in a knife duel and forces the Emperor to yield the throne. The victory does not settle the war. Paul takes Irulan as his future wife, which breaks Chani's trust, and the other Great Houses refuse to accept his claim. He then sends the Fremen to attack their orbiting fleet, and Jessica treats this as the start of a holy war. The film ends with Chani riding away alone on a sandworm.
In Dune (1984), Paul wins the final battle, kills the Harkonnen champion and forces the Emperor to yield. He then calls rain down on Arrakis, and his sister Alia announces that he has brought the change the Fremen hoped for. A planned sequel never followed.
Does the character come back? Part Two ends with him dead. Dune: Part Three is reported by TheWrap to open in theaters on December 18, 2026, and Part Two sets it up as a story based on Dune Messiah.
Best Feyd-Rautha Moments, and What Was the Point of Him?
In my opinion, the point of this character is to give Paul a physical opponent before the story turns political, and it could be argued that Part Two needs that more than Dune (1984) does. Villeneuve spends the second film on Paul's doubts, so a clear Harkonnen enemy lets the audience feel the pull of victory before the cost arrives.
The first moment I would pick is the Baron's decision to replace Rabban. The swap tells us the Harkonnens are changing tactics, so the war with the Fremen gets worse at the very moment Paul is trying to hold back from leading it.
The second is the knife duel itself. Paul has just killed the Baron, Gurney has killed Rabban, and the Emperor sends one last man to fight for him. Perhaps the most interesting choice is that the duel, for all its tension, decides very little: Paul wins the throne and then loses Chani and the support of the Great Houses. Compare that with Dune (1984), where the champion's defeat comes just before Paul makes it rain, and the duel reads as a step toward triumph rather than a warning.
If you want to see where the duel sits in the saga, the Dune timeline and the guide to Paul Atreides pick up from here.
