Dune Cast and Crew: Every Actor and Director

The Dune cast in the Villeneuve films is led by Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, with Zendaya as Chani, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica and Javier Bardem as Stilgar. Dune 2021 and Dune Part Two share most of that ensemble. The 1984 adaptation, directed by David Lynch, is a different film with different actors. The first eight billed names in Dune (2021) cover the Atreides family, Duncan Idaho, the Baron and Gurney Halleck, which fits a film that spends its length on House Atreides arriving on Arrakis. Zendaya is billed 13th in this film, and she moves to second billing in the sequel. The Atreides family is easiest to follow through Paul Atreides, Lady Jessica, Duke Leto Atreides and Gurney Halleck.

The newcomers in Dune: Part Two are Austin Butler as Feyd Rautha, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, Christopher Walken as the Emperor and Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot Fenring. TheWrap reported in March 2022 that Butler was in early talks for the Harkonnen role, and he is credited in the finished film. Stellan Skarsgård returns as the Baron Harkonnen, and Josh Brolin returns as Gurney Halleck.

The main actors in Dune (1984) are Kyle MacLachlan, Francesca Annis, Patrick Stewart, Linda Hunt and José Ferrer, with Sting in the role of Feyd Rautha. This is a standalone adaptation by David Lynch, and none of its actors belong to the later Villeneuve story.

The reported Dune: Part Three cast is mostly the returning ensemble, with Anya Taylor-Joy and Robert Pattinson as new names. TheWrap reported on March 17, 2026 that Timothée Chalamet (Paul Atreides), Zendaya (Chani), Javier Bardem (Stilgar), Rebecca Ferguson (Lady Jessica), Florence Pugh (Princess Irulan), Anya Taylor-Joy (Alia Atreides) and Robert Pattinson (Scytale) are in the film. A second TheWrap report on July 8, 2026 added Jason Momoa as Hayt, along with Isaach De Bankolé, Charlotte Rampling and Josh Brolin, for whom no character names were given. These are reports rather than studio casting announcements, and the film is in post production ahead of its December 18, 2026 release. Its release status is tracked on the next movie page as it changes.

Denis Villeneuve directed Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024), and TheWrap reports that he is also directing Dune: Part Three, while David Lynch directed the earlier Dune (1984). That gives the saga two directors, but only one of them has shaped a continuing story.

Villeneuve's first film runs 155 minutes on a budget of $165 million and earned about $411 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. Dune: Part Two runs 167 minutes on a budget of $190 million and reached roughly $715 million worldwide, per the same source. The 2021 film arrived in US theaters on October 22, 2021 and on HBO Max the same day, with Legendary and Warner Bros. splitting it 75 and 25 percent. The American Society of Cinematographers describes the camera work on the second film, including an infrared method for the planet Giedi Prime, in its article on the production.

Lynch's Dune (1984) runs 136 minutes, had a budget of $40 million and earned about $31.5 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. It reached US theaters on December 14, 1984. Hans Zimmer scored both Villeneuve films, and Brian Eno is credited as composer on Dune (1984). Zimmer's albums for the Villeneuve films are Dune (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) and Dune: Part Two (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack). Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson and Javier Bardem hold the same roles across Dune (2021), Dune: Part Two and, according to TheWrap, Dune: Part Three, so the Villeneuve films have kept their leads unusually stable. In my opinion, that continuity is a large part of why the second film feels like a direct continuation rather than a sequel assembled afterward.

The more interesting question is which roles have changed hands between the two separate adaptations. Several roles appear in both the 1984 film and the Villeneuve films, and each time the two adaptations cast a different actor.

Within the Villeneuve films, the main change is that some Dune (2021) actors do not appear among the first 15 billed names of Dune: Part Two, including Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Chang Chen and David Dastmalchian. Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, Souheila Yacoub and Roger Yuan are the new billed names in the sequel. None of the Villeneuve roles has been recast between films.

Dune: Part Three adds two newcomers, with Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides and Robert Pattinson as Scytale. One entry deserves care: TheWrap reported on July 8, 2026 that Jason Momoa plays Hayt, and I will not guess what that means for the story. Josh Brolin and Charlotte Rampling are also reported, with no character names given.
