Baron Harkonnen: Who He Is, Who Plays Him and How He Dies
Baron Harkonnen (Baron Vladimir Harkonnen) is the head of House Harkonnen and the chief enemy of Paul Atreides in Dune, played by Stellan Skarsgård in Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024) and by Kenneth McMillan in David Lynch's Dune (1984). In the Villeneuve films he helps destroy House Atreides and then dies at Paul's hands in Part Two.

Who Is Baron Harkonnen in Dune?
Baron Harkonnen is the ruler of House Harkonnen, the noble family that governed the desert planet Arrakis and its spice harvest before the Emperor gave the planet to House Atreides. Three films in this franchise have put him on screen, with two different actors sharing the part.
In David Lynch's Dune (1984), the Baron is played by Kenneth McMillan, who is credited as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen and billed thirteenth. In Denis Villeneuve's Dune (2021), Stellan Skarsgård takes the part, again credited as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, and he returns in Dune: Part Two (2024), where the credit shortens to Baron Harkonnen. The 1984 film is a separate, earlier adaptation, so McMillan's Baron has no place in the Villeneuve story.
What did the Baron lose at the start of the story? In Dune (2021), the Emperor takes Arrakis away from the Harkonnens and hands it to House Atreides. If you are new to the series, the Dune characters page places him beside the rest of the ensemble, and the Dune houses page explains how House Harkonnen sits against House Atreides.
The Baron is also the head of a family. In Part Two his nephew is Feyd-Rautha, played by Austin Butler, and Rabban is played by Dave Bautista (credited as Beast Rabban).

Baron Harkonnen's Story Arc Across the FilmsSpoilers
The three films tell the Harkonnen story differently, and the Baron's own arc is clearest in the two Villeneuve films.
In Dune (1984), the Emperor secretly fears House Atreides and schemes with the Harkonnens to destroy it. Duke Leto accepts the rulership of Arrakis, and the Harkonnens, helped by a traitor inside the Atreides household, launch a sudden attack in which the Duke is killed. Paul and Jessica escape into the desert, and Paul later leads the Fremen in raids that cut off Harkonnen spice production. That film's climax is the duel in which Paul defeats the Harkonnen champion Feyd Rautha, played there by Sting.
In Dune (2021), the Emperor takes Arrakis from the Harkonnens and gives it to House Atreides, and Duke Leto accepts even though he suspects a trap. The Harkonnens then attack with the help of the Emperor's Sardaukar soldiers, while the doctor Yueh betrays the Atreides by disabling their shields. Leto is captured and dies after a failed attempt to kill the Baron. The Baron wins the first round, and Paul and Jessica are left to run into the open desert.
In Dune: Part Two, the Baron replaces Rabban with the more ruthless Feyd-Rautha, who steps up the attacks on the Fremen. Paul meanwhile raids the Harkonnen spice operation and rises among the Fremen. When Paul threatens the spice fields, the Emperor and his forces come to Arrakis, and the Fremen attack with atomic weapons and sandworms. The Harkonnen position collapses in that assault, which is where the Baron's story ends.
Who Is Baron Harkonnen to Paul Atreides?
To Paul Atreides, the Baron is the head of the house that destroys his family. His other relationships fill in the rest of his role in each film.
The link to Duke Leto Atreides is the central rivalry. In Dune (2021), Leto is captured and dies after a failed attempt to kill the Baron. Paul Atreides is the one who finally kills the Baron, in Part Two.
The Baron's family is the other web. Feyd-Rautha is his nephew in Part Two, and the Baron replaces Rabban with him. Feyd-Rautha then steps up the attacks on the Fremen.
There are also the people who fight for the Atreides. Gurney Halleck, played by Josh Brolin in both Villeneuve films, kills Rabban in Part Two. Lady Jessica and the Fremen under Stilgar take Paul in after the Harkonnen attack, and Duncan Idaho dies helping Paul and Jessica escape that attack in Dune (2021).
How Does Baron Harkonnen Die?Spoilers
In the Villeneuve films, Baron Harkonnen is killed by Paul Atreides during the final battle of Dune: Part Two. The sequence comes after the Fremen attack the Harkonnen and Imperial forces with atomic weapons and sandworms, and Paul kills the Baron while Gurney kills Rabban.
The death closes the arc that began with Leto's failed attempt on the Baron in Dune (2021). Paul then demands the throne, the Emperor sends Feyd-Rautha to fight in his place, and Paul kills Feyd-Rautha in a knife duel.
That sets the stage for the next film. Dune: Part Three opens on December 18, 2026 according to TheWrap, and Part Two ends with a setup for a third film based on Dune Messiah, in which Paul rules a galaxy at war. The Baron's death is the end of the Harkonnen story in the Villeneuve films.
For the 1984 version, the climax centers on Paul's duel with Feyd Rautha and the confrontation with the Emperor, after which Paul takes the throne and makes it rain on Arrakis.
Best Baron Harkonnen Moments, Ranked by Impact
In my opinion, the Baron's strongest scenes are the ones where the films let him decide something, since that is where the villain stops being a name on a house crest. The picks come from the plots of the three films.
First, perhaps, is the Harkonnen attack in Dune (2021), because it shows how the Baron wins: through the Emperor's Sardaukar and the betrayal by Yueh, who disables the Atreides shields, and not through a fair fight. It could be argued that this is the film's most important choice for the Baron, since it makes him dangerous in a way a single duel could not.
Second is the swap in Part Two, where he replaces Rabban with Feyd-Rautha. It shows a ruler who treats family members as tools, and it gives the second film a sharper opponent for Paul to meet. In Lynch's film, by contrast, Feyd Rautha is the Harkonnen champion whom Paul defeats in the duel.
Third is the end in Part Two, when Paul kills the Baron during the Fremen assault. That being said, it is a quick payoff after two films of setup, and it works because Leto's failed attempt in Dune (2021) is still fresh.
