Allyson Halloween Character: Andi Matichak's Role Explained

Allyson is the granddaughter of Laurie Strode and the daughter of Karen, and she is played by Andi Matichak in all three films of the 2018 to 2022 trilogy: Halloween 2018, Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends. The credits list her simply as Allyson. Matichak is billed third in the first two films, behind Jamie Lee Curtis and Judy Greer, and second in Halloween Ends, behind Curtis.

Allyson exists only in David Gordon Green's trilogy, which treats the 1978 film as its single predecessor and ignores every other sequel and remake. That makes her the third generation of the Strode line on screen, after Laurie Strode and her daughter Karen (Judy Greer). She is not a final girl in the mold of her grandmother, at least not at the start. In 2018 she is a young woman caught between a grandmother who has spent four decades preparing for Michael Myers and a mother who wants nothing to do with that fear. By the third film she has her own job, her own relationship and her own reasons to fight.

Allyson's relationships are almost all family ties, and the one romantic relationship in the trilogy is the one that nearly breaks the family apart. Her bond with Laurie is the spine of her story: in 2018 Allyson is the only family member who stays close to Laurie, who has been cut off from Karen.

Her mother, Karen, is played by Judy Greer, and Karen is the relative who spent years estranged from Laurie because of her preparations. That distance ends when the three women drive away together at the end of the 2018 film, and Karen's death in Halloween Kills turns that fragile reconciliation into grief for Allyson.

Corey Cunningham, played by Rohan Campbell, is the boyfriend people search for. He is the babysitter involved in the 2019 accident that shunned him from Haddonfield. Allyson starts dating him in Halloween Ends, and his path from victim to killer, after meeting a wounded Michael in the sewers, puts Allyson between him and Laurie.

Her relationship with Michael is simply that he killed her mother. Unlike Laurie, she does not hunt him out of long obsession. She fights him when she has to, and the trilogy lets her walk away afterward.

In my opinion, Allyson is best when the trilogy lets her be a witness to Laurie's trauma instead of a copy of it. These are the three moments I would point a new viewer to.

First, the drive away from the burning house in Halloween (2018). Three generations of Strode women ride away together, reconciled after years apart, which is why Karen's death in Halloween Kills lands so hard.

Second, Allyson joining the hunt in Halloween Kills. The crowd chases down Lance Tivoli, an escaped patient they mistake for Michael, and it is the bleakest sequence in the series. Allyson joins that hunt while Laurie urges people to stop, and the film's argument is that fear can turn ordinary people into a threat of their own.

Third, her return in Halloween Ends. She has every reason to stay away after the staged scene with Corey, and, paradoxically, the film is at its strongest when she comes back and fights alongside Laurie. Her decision to leave Haddonfield afterward is also the right ending for her. Perhaps the franchise should have trusted her with more of the story, but the choice to let her walk away is one I can respect.
