What Is Halloween 2018 About?

Halloween (2018), directed by David Gordon Green, follows Laurie Strode forty years after Michael Myers attacked her in Haddonfield, Illinois, and it treats the 1978 film as the only story that came before it. The film opens at Smith's Grove, where Michael has been held for four decades. Two true crime podcasters visit him and try to provoke a reaction by showing him his old mask. He gives them nothing.

Laurie, meanwhile, lives in a fortified home, drinks heavily and has spent years preparing for the night he returns. That preparation cost her the relationship with her daughter Karen, who was taken from her as a child. Karen's daughter Allyson is the one family member who still keeps in touch with Laurie, and she sits between the two women.

Then the facility prepares to move Michael to another location. The transfer bus crashes, and Michael escapes. If you are new to the series, this is a sensible place to start, because the story assumes only the 1978 film. The Halloween movies in order page explains how the other timelines fit around it.

Halloween (2018) Soundtrack and Score

John Carpenter composed the score for Halloween (2018), and no soundtrack album with a label or release date is attached to the film. The music is credited to him as score composer alone, so the film's sound is tied to a single name.

No featured songs are credited to the film either, which means there is no track list to run through and no scene to match to a needle drop. The score carries the music for the whole film.

For the rest of the series, including the scores and songs of the other films, see the Halloween soundtrack page.

Halloween 2018 Plot ExplainedSpoilers

Michael Myers returns to Haddonfield on one long night, takes back his mask and meets three generations of the Strode family, and the story runs through to the ending.

After the bus crash, Michael escapes and kills people on his way back to town. He finds the podcasters, kills them and takes back his mask. He then attacks local teenagers on Halloween night.

Laurie warns Karen that he is coming, and Karen at first dismisses her. Officer Hawkins and Laurie hear about the killings on the radio.

Dr. Sartain, Michael's psychiatrist, is obsessed with him. He turns on Hawkins and takes Michael away in his car, but Michael kills him, and Allyson escapes. Michael then goes to Laurie's house, where the three Strode women have gathered. He is shot and trapped in a hidden basement room, and the women set the house on fire with him inside. Laurie, Karen and Allyson escape and drive away together.

Premiere, Release Dates and Box Office

Halloween 2018 premiered on September 8, 2018 at Toronto's TIFF Midnight Madness, at the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre, and reached US and UK theaters on October 19, 2018. Australia followed on October 25, 2018.

Was the 2018 Halloween film a hit or a flop? It was a hit. Box Office Mojo lists a $10 million budget and a worldwide gross of about $260 million, made up of roughly $159 million in the United States and Canada and about $101 million internationally. That is around 26 times the budget. The two films that followed it earned less: Halloween Kills grossed less than this film worldwide, and Halloween Ends grossed less again. The series totals sit on the Halloween box office page.

The film is rated R in the United States, 18 in the United Kingdom and MA 15+ in Australia. The running time is 106 minutes.

Halloween 2018 Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Halloween 2018 shows Laurie, Karen and Allyson trapping Michael Myers in the safe room under Laurie's house and setting it alight, then driving away as the house burns. Laurie's house becomes the trap, and the last shot leaves Michael's fate open.

What does it mean? In my opinion, there are two endings stacked together. The first is about the family: the three women leave together, reconciled after years apart, and the film treats that as the real victory. The second is about Michael: the film shows the burning basement with no sign of him, and his breathing is heard over the end credits, which suggests he survived. It could be argued that the breathing is the film's way of telling you that the series will not close that easily. Nick Castle, who played Michael in 1978, supplied those breathing sounds, so the last thing you hear is the original performer, which feels deliberate.

The trap itself is the smartest part. For forty years Laurie prepared the house for his return, and the film pays that off by turning the home into the weapon. Compare that with Halloween H20, where Laurie has faked her death, lives as Keri Tate and drinks to cope with nightmares. Both films give her fear and drinking, but H20 sends her into hiding, while 2018 sends her into a fortress and lets the preparation matter. The family angle is also new. Karen was taken from Laurie as a child, and the basement sequence is the first time all three women act as one unit.

Dr. Sartain adds another layer. He is the psychiatrist obsessed with Michael, and his death by Michael's hand echoes the role Dr. Loomis played in the earlier films, the doctor who raced to Haddonfield certain that Michael was heading home. Sartain is the version of that figure who wants to study the monster rather than stop him.

That reading was borne out in the next film. Halloween Kills picks up on the same night, with the family believing he is dead, and firefighters arrive at the house and free him. It then moves into the town's response, with survivors of the 1978 rampage, including Tommy Doyle, gathering to hunt him. Halloween Ends jumps ahead, with Michael unseen and Laurie living with Allyson while writing a memoir, so the fire is treated as a turning point rather than a conclusion.

Perhaps the cleanest comparison is with the older sequels. Halloween 5 opens with Michael surviving a fall into an exploding mine shaft, a survival that needs a hermit and a river to explain. In 2018 the survival is only implied by a sound, which is a far more confident way to keep him alive.

Halloween 2018 Trivia and Series Context

Halloween 2018 is a direct sequel to the 1978 film and ignores every other sequel in the series. That means Halloween II (1981), Halloween 4 and the rest are not part of this story.

The film was made by Trancas International Films, Blumhouse Productions and Miramax. Carpenter, who directed the original, was brought in as executive producer and creative consultant, and Green and McBride supplied the script and executive produced for Rough House Pictures.

Nick Castle played Michael Myers in 1978 and returned for the window scene and the breathing sounds, while James Jude Courtney played the character for the rest of the film. Facts

FAQs

Is Halloween 2018 a sequel to the original?

Yes. Halloween 2018 is a direct sequel to the 1978 film, set forty years after it, and Universal describes it as a sequel that departs from the other follow ups. David Gordon Green directed it, and Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie Strode.

Why did Halloween 2018 ignore Halloween 2?

Halloween 2018 was made as a direct sequel to the 1978 film, so it skips every other sequel, including Halloween II (1981) and Rob Zombie's Halloween II (2009). Universal's announcement framed it that way, and the story picks up forty years after the original night in Haddonfield.

Was the 2018 Halloween film a hit or a flop?

It was a hit. Box Office Mojo lists a $10 million budget and about $260 million worldwide, which is roughly 26 times the cost of making it. It earned more than Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends.

Why is Halloween 2018 so good?

That is a matter of opinion, but the common case is that it builds on one earlier film, gives Laurie Strode forty years of consequences and uses three generations of the Strode family. The score by John Carpenter, Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies also keeps close to the original sound.

Where can I watch Halloween 2018?
