Who Is Laurie Strode, and Who Plays Her?
Laurie Strode is a Haddonfield, Illinois high schooler who spends Halloween night in 1978 babysitting and becomes the person Michael Myers keeps coming back for. In Halloween 1978, directed by John Carpenter, she moves through an ordinary school day while noticing a silent figure watching her. That evening she plans to babysit young Tommy, while her friend Annie looks after Lindsey down the street and her friend Lynda arranges to meet her boyfriend. The production was originally titled The Babysitter Murders, which says a good deal about where the filmmakers began: with the babysitter, not the killer.
Who plays Laurie Strode? Jamie Lee Curtis plays her in seven of the nine films, from 1978 through Halloween Ends (2022), and Scout Taylor-Compton plays her in both of Rob Zombie's remakes. Curtis is billed second behind Donald Pleasence in the 1978 original and first in every other film she returns for, apart from Halloween: Resurrection (2002), where her screen time comes before the main story begins. Taylor-Compton is billed first in both Zombie films.
What is Laurie Strode's real name? The credits show how many names she carries. She is billed as Laurie in 1978 and in Halloween Ends, as Laurie Strode in most of the others, and as Laurie Strode / Keri Tate in Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998). In that film she has faked her death and lives in California as the headmistress of Hillcrest Academy. Laurie Strode is her name, and Keri Tate is the alias she hides behind.
How old is Laurie Strode? No single age fits, because the films revisit her at different points in her life. She is a high schooler in 1978, a mother with a teenage son twenty years later in H20, and a grandmother in the 2018 trilogy, which picks up forty years after the original.
Laurie Strode movies run to nine films, from 1978 through 2022. She is not in Halloween 3 Season of the Witch (1982), an unconnected story with no Michael Myers. She also does not appear on screen in Halloween 4 (1988), Halloween 5 (1989) or Halloween The Curse of Michael Myers (1995). Laurie Strode Movies: Her Story Arc in Every FilmSpoilers
Laurie Strode's story arc spans nine films, and it reads most clearly one group of films at a time.
The original films. In Halloween 1978, Michael has already killed Annie, then Lynda and her boyfriend Bob, and arranged the bodies to frighten Laurie. She goes to check on her friends, finds them and is attacked. She fights back and wounds him several times, yet he keeps getting up, so she gets Tommy and Lindsey to safety and calls for help. Loomis shoots Michael off a balcony and then finds the body gone. Halloween II 1981, directed by Rick Rosenthal, starts on the same night with Laurie sedated at Haddonfield Memorial Hospital, which has only a small night staff. Michael works through that staff while she drifts in and out of sleep, and Jimmy, a paramedic who has grown fond of her, is knocked out after slipping in blood. When she wakes, she shoots Michael in both eyes in an operating room, and Loomis then ignites leaking gas. She is moved to another hospital the next morning, alive but traumatized.
Halloween H20 (1998) and Halloween Resurrection (2002). Halloween H20 (1998), directed by Steve Miner, finds her twenty years later as Keri Tate, drinking too much, having nightmares and afraid her brother will find her. Her son John is tired of her overprotectiveness. Michael kills Marion Chambers, a former colleague of Loomis, and steals the files on Laurie, which sends him to Hillcrest Academy. After finding the bodies, Laurie gets John and Molly to safety and decides she cannot keep running. She goes back for Michael with an axe and ends it. Curtis agreed to return on the condition that the film not hint at a sequel, so H20 plays as the close of Laurie's arc. Halloween Resurrection (2002), directed by Rick Rosenthal, undoes that closure fast: Laurie is in a psychiatric facility, convinced the man she killed was not Michael, and he finds her there.
Rob Zombie's remakes. Scout Taylor-Compton plays a different Laurie. In Halloween 2007, directed by Rob Zombie, Michael kills Laurie's adoptive parents and several of her friends, takes her to his old house and shows her a photo of the two of them as children. She stabs him in the neck and flees, and the final struggle ends with both of them falling over a railing as a gun fires. Halloween II 2009 has her living with Sheriff Brackett and his daughter Annie, haunted by the night and by dark visions, as Michael comes back.
The 2018 trilogy. David Gordon Green's films treat the 1978 original as their only predecessor. In Halloween 2018, which grossed about $260 million worldwide on a $10 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo, Laurie has spent four decades preparing for Michael's return. She lives in a fortified home, drinks heavily and is estranged from her daughter Karen, who was taken from her as a child. Her granddaughter Allyson is the only family member who stays close. After a bus crash frees Michael, the three women lock him in a hidden basement room and set the house on fire, then drive away together. Halloween Kills (2021) keeps Laurie in a hospital bed for most of the film, while Karen hides from her that Michael is still alive. Laurie learns the truth and urges the angry crowd led by Tommy Doyle to stop. Halloween Ends (2022) jumps ahead three years from the 2019 accident that makes Corey Cunningham an outcast in Haddonfield. Laurie is writing a memoir and raising Allyson, who is now a nurse. She helps Corey after bullies attack him, then senses something dark in him as Allyson begins dating him.
Laurie Strode's Family: Michael Myers, Jamie Lloyd, Karen and Allyson
Laurie Strode is Michael Myers' younger sister in Halloween II (1981) and in Rob Zombie's two films, a mother in Halloween 4 (1988), Halloween H20 (1998) and the 2018 trilogy, and a grandmother in the 2018 trilogy.
Who is Laurie Strode to Myers? In Halloween II (1981), Loomis learns from Marion that Laurie is Michael's younger sister, adopted after their family's deaths, and the reveal explains why Michael is drawn to her. Michael was six years old in 1963 and escapes fifteen years later, which puts him at 21 in 1978, while Laurie is still a high schooler, so she is the younger sibling by a clear margin. Rob Zombie's films build the bond into the opening: Michael is ten when he kills his sister Judith and others, and he spares his baby sister. In Halloween (2007) he wants to take Laurie with him, and in Halloween II (2009) she learns that her birth name was Angel Myers. H20 keeps the idea alive, since Michael kills Marion Chambers and steals files on his sister Laurie, which is how he finds her under the name Keri Tate. The 2018 trilogy gives her a different place in his story. Universal describes Halloween (2018) as a sequel to the 1978 film that departs from its sequels, so the 1981 reveal is not part of it. As such, the Michael Myers character page is the place to compare what each film says he wants.
Her children differ from film to film. Halloween 4 (1988) introduces Jamie Lloyd as Laurie's orphaned daughter, played by Danielle Harris in that film and the next, and by J.C. Brandy in Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995). In H20, Laurie has a teenage son, John, played by Josh Hartnett. In the 2018 trilogy her daughter is Karen, played by Judy Greer in the first two films, and her granddaughter is Allyson, played by Andi Matichak in all three. The Allyson bond is the one that carries into Halloween Ends (2022), where Laurie and Allyson fall out over Corey and then defeat Michael together.
Her allies are as telling as her family. Dr. Loomis is the one who believes her, played by Donald Pleasence in the first two films and by Malcolm McDowell in the Zombie pair. Tommy Doyle, the boy she babysits in 1978, returns as an adult played by Anthony Michael Hall in Halloween Kills (2021). Kyle Richards plays Lindsey in 1978 and again in Halloween Ends (2022). In the final film, Laurie also reconnects with Frank Hawkins, played by Will Patton, the officer who was badly hurt in 2018.
Laurie Strode's Death: What Happens to Her in Each FilmSpoilers
Laurie Strode survives the 1978 night, and her later fate depends on the film: she dies in the opening of Halloween: Resurrection (2002), and she lives to the final scene of Halloween Ends (2022).
Halloween (1978) and Halloween II (1981). She survives Halloween (1978) and then Halloween II (1981), where she is alive but traumatized when she is moved to another hospital. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988) describes Jamie Lloyd as Laurie's orphaned daughter. Laurie does not appear on screen in that film or in the two that follow. Is Laurie supposed to be dead in Halloween 4 (1988)? The film calls Jamie orphaned and Laurie is absent, so the story points that way, but the film does not show what happened to her.
Halloween H20 (1998) and Halloween Resurrection (2002). Halloween H20 (1998) closes with Laurie killing Michael with an axe as emergency sirens approach. Halloween: Resurrection (2002) then opens with her in a psychiatric facility, convinced she killed the wrong man, and she does not survive Michael's visit. It is a hard reversal of the earlier ending, and the film moves on to a new group of characters for the rest of its run.
Rob Zombie's films. Halloween (2007) ends with Laurie and Michael falling over a railing, a gun going off and police sirens closing in, which leaves her fate open. In Halloween II (2009), Michael kills Loomis, Brackett shoots Michael and Laurie finishes him with his own knife. She walks outside in his torn mask, and the last scene shows her in a psychiatric ward, grinning as her mother's ghost arrives with the white horse. Zombie also filmed an alternate ending in which police fire on Laurie. The finished film leaves her mentally broken rather than dead.
The 2018 trilogy. Laurie survives all three films. In Halloween Ends (2022), she and Allyson overpower Michael, who dies from his wounds. His body is paraded through town and destroyed in an industrial shredder at the salvage yard, and Laurie keeps his mask. Allyson leaves Haddonfield for a fresh start, Laurie finishes her memoir, and nothing is set up beyond that. For where the story may go next, see the latest on a new Halloween movie.
Laurie Strode's Best Moments: My Picks and Why
In my opinion, Laurie Strode's best moments are the ones where she changes the rule that Michael Myers always gets up, and my pick for the single best is her return in Halloween H20 (1998).
The 1978 film earns a place for what she does after the fight rather than during it. She wounds Michael several times and he keeps rising, yet her first act is to get Tommy and Lindsey to safety and call for help. That choice shapes how every later Laurie is written, and it is why a babysitter, not a cop, became the series' center.
Halloween II (1981) gives her one practical set piece: in the operating room she shoots Michael in both eyes, taking away the thing that makes him a hunter. It lands harder because Rick Rosenthal's film has kept her sedated and half conscious for most of the night. Then, in H20, she decides she cannot keep running, picks up an axe and goes back for him. Perhaps that is the best single beat in the series, because it answers twenty years of Keri Tate's drinking and nightmares with a decision, and Curtis insisting on an ending without a sequel hook makes it feel final. That being said, Halloween: Resurrection (2002) undoes it in its opening, which is the main reason I rank it as one of the weakest uses of the character.
The 2018 trilogy has two moments worth naming. The first is the basement trap, where three generations of Strode women lock Michael in the safe room, set the house alight and drive away reconciled, a payoff for forty years of her paranoia being proven right. The second is the shredder in Halloween Ends (2022), which finally treats Michael's body as something that can be dealt with by the town, not only by Laurie. If you want to see how these films compare as a whole, see Halloween movies ranked.

FAQs
Who is Laurie Strode to Michael Myers?
Laurie is Michael's younger sister in Halloween II (1981), where Dr. Loomis learns from Marion that she was adopted after their family's deaths. Rob Zombie's Halloween (2007) and Halloween II (2009) also make her his sister, the baby he spared as a child. The 2018 trilogy is a direct sequel to Halloween (1978) that departs from the sequels, so the 1981 reveal does not carry over.
Is Laurie supposed to be dead in Halloween 4 (1988)?
The film does not show it. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988) introduces Jamie Lloyd as Laurie Strode's orphaned daughter, and Laurie is not on screen. She also does not appear in Halloween 5 (1989) or Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995), and she is back, living as Keri Tate, in Halloween H20 (1998).
How much older is Michael Myers than Laurie Strode?
The films give Michael as six years old in 1963 and escaping fifteen years later, which makes him 21 in 1978, while Laurie is still a high schooler in the same film. That makes her clearly younger. In Rob Zombie's version Michael is ten years old when he spares his baby sister, which makes the gap larger.
Did Lori Strode have a son?
Yes, in Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998). The credits spell the name Laurie, and living as Keri Tate she has a teenage son named John, played by Josh Hartnett. Her children differ in other films: Jamie Lloyd is her daughter in Halloween 4 (1988), and Karen is her daughter in the 2018 trilogy.
Why does Michael Myers want Laurie?
Where the films give a reason, it is family. Halloween II (1981) reveals that Laurie is his younger sister, which explains why he is drawn to her, and in H20 he kills Marion Chambers to steal the files on his sister. In Rob Zombie's Halloween (2007), he wants to take her with him and shows her a photo of the two of them as children.
Who played Laurie Strode?
Jamie Lee Curtis plays Laurie Strode in Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1981), Halloween H20 (1998), Halloween: Resurrection (2002), Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills (2021) and Halloween Ends (2022). Scout Taylor-Compton plays her in Rob Zombie's Halloween (2007) and Halloween II (2009).
