The Halloween Kills ending is that Michael Myers survives the mob, kills Karen in the Myers house, and leaves Laurie Strode in a hospital bed knowing both facts. The last act is spoiled here, and the reading of it is mine, so take it as opinion.
What does the pitchfork scene prove? Karen stabs Michael, takes his mask, and the crowd decides he is dead. Then he rises. The rule the film sets, as I read it, is that Michael does not stop for wounds that would end anyone else, so every plan built on his death fails. Halloween (2018) closed with the family believing the basement fire had finished him, and Halloween Kills undoes that belief within minutes by sending firefighters in to free him.
What is the film saying about the mob? It could be argued that its sharpest idea is fear pointed at the wrong target. Tommy Doyle's crowd kills Lance Tivoli, a patient who is not Michael, before it ever reaches the real thing. At the Myers house, the numbers do not help them, because a crowd of people with no plan only gives the monster more to do.
Why does Karen die? She is the one who seemed to beat him, and, in my opinion, that is exactly why the film removes her. Her death breaks the three generation line that 2018 built between Laurie, Karen and Allyson. By Halloween Ends, Laurie is living with her granddaughter Allyson, so the loss carries forward.
