Alec Baldwin is the first, as Dr. Jack Ryan in The Hunt for Red October (1990), directed by John McTiernan. This Ryan is a desk analyst who studies the record of Soviet captain Marko Ramius, concludes that Ramius means to defect rather than start a war, and then has to prove it, which sends him out to the fleet and aboard the USS Dallas.

Harrison Ford took over the role and plays it twice. In Patriot Games (1992), directed by Phillip Noyce, Ryan is a former Marine turned CIA analyst who happens to be in London when he steps in to stop an attack on Lord Holmes. That act makes an enemy of Sean Miller, the younger brother of a man Ryan kills, and the film becomes a story about a family under threat. In Clear and Present Danger (1994), also directed by Noyce, Ryan is acting deputy director of intelligence while his boss is treated for cancer, and he is tested by a covert operation that nobody told him about.

Ben Affleck plays a younger Ryan in The Sum of All Fears (2002), directed by Phil Alden Robinson. Here he is a junior analyst whom CIA director William Cabot brings along because of his research on the new Russian president.

Chris Pine plays the origin version in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014), directed by Kenneth Branagh. This Ryan is a London student during the September 11 attacks, then a Marine whose helicopter is shot down in Afghanistan, and later an undercover analyst watching money flows on Wall Street. No sequel followed.

James Greer is the senior CIA figure in Ryan's corner, and he is the one character played by the same actor in three films. Cathy Ryan is Ryan's wife, a doctor, and she has three faces. Anne Archer plays Dr. Caroline "Cathy" Ryan in Patriot Games and Dr. Cathy Ryan in Clear and Present Danger. Bridget Moynahan plays Dr. Cathy Muller in The Sum of All Fears, where she is Ryan's fiancée. Keira Knightley plays Cathy Muller in Shadow Recruit, the film that makes her an active part of the mission, since she flies to Moscow and is recruited to help get into Viktor Cherevin's offices. John Clark is the field operative to Ryan's analyst, the man who does the work Ryan cannot. Willem Dafoe plays him in Clear and Present Danger, where he recruits and leads the covert team in the Colombian jungle. Liev Schreiber takes over in The Sum of All Fears, where Clark tracks the dying arms dealer Ghazi in Syria. Raymond Cruz plays Domingo Chavez in Clear and Present Danger, and he survives that film to appear in later Jack Ryan stories.

Marko Ramius is the Soviet submarine captain at the center of the first film, played by Sean Connery, and he drives the story as much as Ryan does. His profile is at marko ramius. Every film brings a new antagonist. The Hunt for Red October has the saboteur Loginov working against Ramius's plan, Patriot Games has Sean Miller (Sean Bean), and Clear and Present Danger has the cartel boss Ernesto Escobedo (Miguel Sandoval) alongside his intelligence chief Felix Cortez (Joaquim de Almeida). The Sum of All Fears has the Austrian billionaire Richard Dressler (Alan Bates), and Shadow Recruit has the Russian oligarch Viktor Cherevin, played by director Kenneth Branagh. In Clear and Present Danger the more dangerous figure may be inside Washington: James Cutter, the national security advisor played by Harris Yulin, is the one who sets up the illegal operation.

The four Ryans differ less in charm than in how much of the job each film lets him do, and, in my opinion, that gap explains why the Ford films feel like the center of the saga. Baldwin's Ryan spends most of The Hunt for Red October reading a captain's file and arguing with superiors, then finally boards the USS Dallas, so his heroism is persuasion. Ford's Ryan is pushed into physical danger in London in Patriot Games and into political danger in Clear and Present Danger, where the fight is over whether he will tell Congress the truth. Affleck and Pine are both asked to carry origin stories: Affleck as the junior analyst Cabot brings along, Pine as a wounded Marine turned Wall Street watcher.

The supporting players show the same pattern. Greer is the only continuity thread between the Baldwin and Ford eras, since James Earl Jones carries over even though Ford replaced Baldwin after a schedule delay, as reported by the Washington Post in 1991. Cathy grows from a hospital patient after the highway attack in Patriot Games to an active partner who flies to Moscow in Shadow Recruit. And Clark changes with the actor: Dafoe's Clark leads a jungle team, while Schreiber's tracks Ghazi in Syria.

The budgets and grosses also line up with that ranking of scale. The Hunt for Red October cost $30 million and earned about $200 million worldwide, while Clear and Present Danger, the longest of the five at 141 minutes, cost $62 million and earned about $216 million. Shadow Recruit, the shortest at 105 minutes, cost $60 million and earned about $136 million. If you want one Ryan to start with, I would pick Ford in Clear and Present Danger, because Greer, Clark, Chavez and Cathy all share the screen with him.
