Jack Ryan Timeline: Every Film in Story Order
The Jack Ryan timeline covers five films released from 1990 to 2014 with four actors in the lead, and it reads as four takes on one character, with only the two Harrison Ford films linked directly. The Hunt for Red October opens in 1984, Shadow Recruit restarts Ryan's career in the September 11 era, and Ghost War, made for Prime Video, sits outside the theatrical run.
The Jack Ryan Timeline in Order
What Is Jack Ryan's Background?
Across the films, Jack Ryan is a former Marine who becomes a CIA analyst and keeps getting pulled into field work that an analyst should never face. That pattern holds for all four actors, even though each version tells the early years a little differently.
The fullest origin on screen is jack ryan shadow recruit, directed by Kenneth Branagh (2014). Its Ryan is a student in London when the September 11 attacks happen, and he later joins the Marines. His helicopter is shot down in Afghanistan, his back is badly hurt, and during recovery he meets a medical student named Cathy Muller. A senior CIA official, William Harper, then recruits him as an analyst. A decade later Ryan works on Wall Street under cover, watching money flows for signs of terror financing.
The earlier films start further along. Patriot Games introduces him as a former Marine turned CIA analyst on a London visit with his wife and daughter. The Sum of All Fears shows him as a junior analyst whose research on a Russian leader gets him noticed by the CIA director. 1984: The Hunt for Red OctoberSpoilers
The earliest dated event on the Jack Ryan timeline is 1984, when the Soviet Union launches Red October, a ballistic missile submarine with a nearly silent propulsion system. The Hunt for Red October (1990), directed by John McTiernan, stars Alec Baldwin as Ryan and Sean Connery as the Soviet captain marko ramius.
Ramius sails out on a first patrol and then changes the mission, and the American submarine USS Dallas loses track of the boat. Ryan studies Ramius's record and decides he intends to defect rather than start a war. To prove it, he flies out to the fleet and joins the Dallas under Commander Bart Mancuso. The film ends with Ramius and a few officers handing the submarine to the Americans while the Soviets believe it is lost, and Ryan and Ramius bring it into the Penobscot River in Maine. Ryan then flies home to London, despite his fear of flying.
Admiral James Greer, played by James Earl Jones, appears here and again in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. See james greer jack ryan for the character.
Patriot Games: Ryan Becomes a TargetSpoilers
Patriot Games (1992), directed by Phillip Noyce, is where Harrison Ford takes over the role from Alec Baldwin and the story turns personal. Ryan, in London with his wife and daughter, sees an attack on Lord Holmes by Irish militants, steps in, kills one attacker and is wounded himself. The dead man's younger brother, Sean Miller, is captured and swears revenge.
What follows is a run of consequences. Ryan returns to the United States, teaches at the Naval Academy and works part time with the CIA. Miller's allies in a hardline splinter group break him out of a prison van, and the group takes refuge in a training camp in North Africa. The first attack on Ryan's wife and daughter happens on a highway and puts them in the hospital, so Ryan goes back to the agency to help track the group down.
The finale is a speedboat fight at Ryan's waterside house, where he kills Miller before the boat explodes. The last scene is quiet: Cathy's doctor says the unborn baby is healthy. The film leaves Ryan's CIA career open for the sequel. Cathy, played here by Anne Archer, is covered at cathy ryan jack ryan.
Clear and Present Danger: The Acting Deputy DirectorSpoilers
Clear and Present Danger (1994), directed by Phillip Noyce, finds Jack Ryan promoted to acting deputy director of intelligence because Admiral Greer is being treated for cancer. Read as a clear and present danger movie entry on the timeline, it is the point where Ryan moves from field work to a desk job with real authority.
The story begins with a Coast Guard boarding in the Caribbean. A yacht is found with a businessman, a friend of the President, and his family dead. Ryan traces the money to a Colombian cartel run by Ernesto Escobedo. Meanwhile the President lets national security advisor James Cutter build a secret military force, and Ryan unknowingly lobbies Congress for the money that pays for it. John Clark, played by Willem Dafoe, takes that force into the jungle, with Domingo Chavez on his team.
The cartel's Felix Cortez cuts a deal with Cutter, and the soldiers are left stranded. Ryan flies to Colombia, and he and Clark compare notes and realize both were deceived. They pull the survivors out of a cartel compound. Back in Washington, Ryan turns down the President's request for silence and agrees to testify. Clark and Chavez live to appear in later Jack Ryan stories.
The Sum of All Fears: A New Ryan, an Earlier StartSpoilers
The Sum of All Fears (2002), directed by Phil Alden Robinson, recasts Ryan with Ben Affleck and presents him as a junior analyst. The film reaches back to 1973, when an Israeli nuclear bomb is lost after a warplane is shot down over the Golan Heights.
In the present day a Syrian scrap collector digs it up, an arms dealer buys it, and it ends up with the Austrian billionaire Richard Dressler, who leads a neo-Nazi network that wants the United States and Russia to turn on each other. CIA director William Cabot, played by Morgan Freeman, brings Ryan along to study the new Russian president, Nemerov. The bomb is shipped to Baltimore and explodes at a football game, which also fatally wounds Cabot. Ryan then works out from the bomb's isotopes that the material came from the US rather than from Russia, and with help from John Clark, now played by Liev Schreiber, he persuades Nemerov to stand down. President Fowler does the same, and war is avoided.
By the end Ryan is engaged to Catherine and staying in the CIA. Read william cabot sum of all fears for the director who brings him in.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit: The Reboot EraSpoilers
The newest film on the theatrical timeline is jack ryan shadow recruit (2014), directed by Kenneth Branagh, who also plays the Russian oligarch Viktor Cherevin. Chris Pine is Ryan, Keira Knightley is Cathy Muller and Kevin Costner plays the CIA official who recruits Ryan, William Harper.
The plot starts from Ryan's Wall Street work. He spots that large sums tied to Cherevin's business interests have vanished after Russia loses a United Nations vote, and when Cherevin's accounts are shut off during an audit, Ryan flies to Moscow. A fake bodyguard tries to kill him at his hotel. Cathy arrives because she suspects an affair, and Ryan has to tell her he works for the CIA. The files they copy from Cherevin's offices show that Cherevin planted his son Aleksandr in the US as a sleeper agent, and that Aleksandr plans to attack Wall Street.
Ryan stops him by driving a fake police vehicle with a bomb inside into the East River and jumping clear. The film ends with Ryan and Cathy married, and with Ryan and Harper called to the White House. No sequel followed.
Where Ghost War Fits
Ghost War is the one Jack Ryan film that never reached a movie theater screen, so it stays outside the five title theatrical chronology. Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War is an Amazon MGM production, and TheWrap reported that it premiered worldwide on Prime Video on May 20, 2026, with no theatrical run. Amazon lists it as streaming exclusively on Prime Video.
Because the launch was global, none of the sources I read gives a separate UK or Australian date. The Paramount films all had staggered national releases, and that is the clearest practical difference between them and this one. No follow-up Jack Ryan film has been announced or reported, and the latest status sits under next jack ryan movie.
Jack Ryan Timeline Books: Where Tom Clancy's Novels Fit
Tom Clancy's novels do not line up with the films into one chronology, because each of the five films casts a new actor and tells its own version of the character. Fans often call the wider body of Clancy's Ryan stories the Ryanverse, and its reading order is a separate question from the order of the movies.
That wider world includes novels such as Red Rabbit and Debt of Honor, which follow Ryan himself, and Without Remorse, which centers on John Clark rather than Ryan. It also includes Jack Ryan Jr., Ryan's son, who carries the family name into later books. The Prime Video series Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan with John Krasinski is television, and it belongs to its own continuity too.

Jack Ryan Timeline Explained: One Character, Several ContinuitiesSpoilers
In my opinion, the cleanest way to read the Jack Ryan timeline is as four separate continuities with one real link between them. That link is the pair of Harrison Ford films: Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger share Cathy, their daughter Sally and Admiral Greer, and Clear and Present Danger picks up the career that Patriot Games left open.
The evidence for the break is in the details. In The Sum of All Fears, Ryan is a junior analyst engaged to Catherine, while in Patriot Games he is already married with a daughter. Shadow Recruit goes further back still, starting with September 11 and a ruined back in Afghanistan, and it ends with Ryan and Cathy married. It could be argued that each recast is a restart that borrows the same core: a Marine past, an analyst's brain and a talent for being in the wrong room.
The Hunt for Red October is the outlier in the other direction. It is dated to 1984 and shows a Ryan who is already a capable analyst, yet it stars Alec Baldwin, and only Greer, played by James Earl Jones, carries over into the Ford films. As such, release order and story order are the same sequence, and the jack ryan movies in order guide lays it out.
If you are new to the saga, my advice is to start with Red October, treat Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger as a two part story, and take the last two films as stand alone entries. Add Ghost War afterward if you want more. For the wider picture, return to the jack ryan movies hub, or see jack ryan movies ranked for how the five compare.

FAQs
What is the timeline of the Jack Ryan universe?
The film timeline runs across five movies, from The Hunt for Red October (1990) to Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014), and the release order and chronological order are the same. Each recast brings a new version of Ryan, so only the two Harrison Ford films, Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, connect directly.
What is Jack Ryan's background?
Ryan is a former Marine who becomes a CIA analyst. In Shadow Recruit he is a London student during the September 11 attacks, joins the Marines, survives a helicopter shot down in Afghanistan with a badly hurt back, meets Cathy Muller during recovery and is recruited by William Harper. In Patriot Games he is introduced as a former Marine turned CIA analyst.
When was the Jack Ryan series?
The five Jack Ryan films were released between 1990 and 2014. The most recent title is Ghost War, an Amazon MGM film that premiered globally on Prime Video on May 20, 2026, according to TheWrap, with no theatrical run.
What year does Jack Ryan take place?
There is no single year, because each film tells its own version. The Hunt for Red October is set in 1984. The Sum of All Fears reaches back to a lost bomb in 1973 and then moves to the present day. Shadow Recruit starts with the September 11 attacks and then jumps a decade ahead to Ryan's Wall Street work.
Where does Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit fit in the timeline?
It is the fifth and latest theatrical film, released in 2014, and it works as an origin story that restarts Ryan's career. It ends with Ryan and Cathy married and with Ryan and Harper called to the White House. No sequel followed.
Do I need to watch the films in a certain order?
Not strictly, because most of the films stand alone. Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger work best as a pair, since they share the Ryan family and Admiral Greer. Release order and story order match, so the sequence is simply 1990, 1992, 1994, 2002 and 2014.
