Blue Raptor: The Velociraptor Owen Grady Trained
Blue raptor is the Velociraptor that Owen Grady trains in Jurassic World (2015), directed by Colin Trevorrow, and Blue returns in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022). Blue is shot and saved in Fallen Kingdom, and the Dominion story opens with Blue alive and turning up with a young offspring named Beta.
Who Is Blue the Raptor in Jurassic World?
Blue is a Velociraptor, one of a small pack of raptors that Owen Grady trains on Isla Nublar in Jurassic World (2015). Owen is a former Navy animal behaviorist, and the film opens twenty-two years after the original disaster, with a full dinosaur theme park open and busy. The raptors are the animals in that park nobody can fully relax around, and Blue is the one the saga keeps returning to.
The raptors in Jurassic Park (1993), directed by Steven Spielberg, are a different set of animals, the pack that hunts the survivors through the visitor center. Blue first appears in the 2015 film, so the character belongs to the Jurassic World era of the saga. Owen Grady is the human anchor for the pack, and Blue is the animal he is most tied to.
The pack matters to the plot early, because security chief Vic Hoskins sees Owen's raptors as a way to turn dinosaurs into military assets. That tension, between a trainer who treats the animals as something close to partners and a man who sees weapons, frames the position Blue is in from the start.

Blue's Story Across Three FilmsSpoilers
Blue's story runs across Jurassic World (2015), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022), taking the character from pack member to survivor to something close to a parent.
Jurassic World (2015). The park's lab creates the Indominus rex, a hybrid that escapes its paddock and starts killing. The Indominus reveals that it carries raptor DNA and takes control of the raptor pack, turning the animals against the humans. Claire Dearing frees the old Tyrannosaurus rex, which fights the Indominus with help from Blue. The park's Mosasaurus finally drags the hybrid into the lagoon.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018). Directed by J. A. Bayona, the film begins with a volcano threatening the dinosaurs left on Isla Nublar. Blue is described as the last raptor, and Claire Dearing brings Owen in to find Blue as part of a rescue effort backed by Eli Mills. The team does find Blue, but mercenaries betray them, shoot Blue and leave the heroes behind as the eruption starts. Zia helps save Blue with a transfusion, and the captured animals are shipped to the Lockwood estate in California. Later, when the Indoraptor hunts Owen, Claire and Maisie through the mansion, Blue fights the hybrid and it dies on a skull display.
Jurassic World Dominion (2022). Four years later, Owen and Claire are hiding in a remote cabin with Maisie Lockwood. Blue turns up with a young offspring that Maisie names Beta. Mercenaries then kidnap Maisie and Beta, and the search for them drives much of the story. Owen recovers Beta before the group escapes by helicopter from the burning Biosyn site.
Who Is Blue Closest To?
Blue's closest bond is with Owen Grady, the trainer who works with the pack in Jurassic World (2015) and who is pulled back to find Blue in Fallen Kingdom. The relationship runs through Owen, and it is the reason Blue's survival matters to the plot rather than being a footnote.
Claire Dearing. Claire is the one who brings Owen back to track Blue in Fallen Kingdom, as part of the rescue plan, so she links Blue to the rest of the human cast. See Claire Dearing for her side of the story.
Zia Rodriguez. Zia helps save Blue with a transfusion after the mercenaries shoot the raptor. It is a small act in a crowded film, and it is the reason Blue is alive for the fight at the Lockwood estate.
Beta and Maisie. Beta is the young offspring that arrives with Blue in Dominion, and Maisie Lockwood is the teenager who names the animal. The kidnapping of both Maisie and Beta ties them together in the plot.
The old Tyrannosaurus rex. In Jurassic World (2015), Blue helps the old Tyrannosaurus rex fight the Indominus rex after Claire frees the larger animal.
The hybrids. Blue's two hybrid opponents are the Indominus rex, which carries raptor DNA, and the Indoraptor, a new hybrid introduced in Fallen Kingdom. Blue fights the Indominus alongside the Tyrannosaurus, then faces the Indoraptor alone in the mansion, where it dies on a skull display.
What Happened to Blue the Raptor? Did Blue Die?Spoilers
Blue survives: the raptor is shot in Fallen Kingdom, saved by a transfusion from Zia, and alive when Dominion begins. In Jurassic World Dominion, Blue arrives with the offspring Beta, and the story turns to getting Beta back.
Dominion centers on Maisie, Beta, Biosyn and the locust swarms. Owen recovers Beta, the group escapes, and the final scenes show Owen, Claire and Maisie living as a family while dinosaurs and people share the world. The plot of the film does not describe Blue dying, so Blue is alive at the start and gets no later fate on screen.
The seventh film, Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), directed by Gareth Edwards, does not include Blue in its plot. It follows Zora Bennett's covert team on the former InGen research island, with a Mosasaurus, a Titanosaurus, a Quetzalcoatlus and the mutated Distortus rex as the main creatures. As for what comes next, the next Jurassic World movie is in development with no announced release date, according to Newsweek, so nothing is confirmed about Blue appearing again.
Blue's Best Moments, Ranked by a Creature Fan
In my opinion, Blue's best moment is still the lagoon fight in Jurassic World (2015), when the raptor joins the old Tyrannosaurus rex against the Indominus. It could be argued that the Mosasaurus gets the showpiece finish, but the scene works because a raptor the Indominus had turned against the humans ends up fighting on their side.
The second pick is the skull display fight in Fallen Kingdom. Blue against the Indoraptor is a clean duel between the natural raptor and the lab made one, and the way the hybrid dies, on a skull display, is exactly the kind of grim joke the series does well. Perhaps the transfusion earlier in the film deserves a mention too, since it is the reason the duel can happen at all.
The last pick is Blue's return in Dominion with Beta in tow. It is not an action beat, but it answers the question the previous film left hanging, which is whether the last raptor stays the last. That being said, I would still rate the 2015 fight above everything else, because it is the clearest picture of why this animal became the face of the raptors.

FAQs
What happened to Blue Raptor?
Blue is shot by mercenaries on Isla Nublar in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, saved by a transfusion from Zia, and shipped to the Lockwood estate. There, Blue fights the Indoraptor, which dies on a skull display. In Jurassic World Dominion, Blue turns up alive with a young offspring named Beta.
What kind of raptor was Blue?
Blue is a Velociraptor, one of the small pack of raptors that Owen Grady trains on Isla Nublar in Jurassic World (2015). The raptors in Jurassic Park (1993) are a separate set of animals, so Blue belongs to the Jurassic World films.
Why is Blue the Raptor special?
Blue is the raptor the saga follows across three films, and the one Owen Grady goes back to find in Fallen Kingdom. Blue fights beside the Tyrannosaurus rex against the Indominus rex, survives being shot, fights the Indoraptor, and returns in Dominion with the offspring Beta.
Is Blue the only Velociraptor left?
In Fallen Kingdom, Blue is described as the last raptor, which is why Claire Dearing and Owen Grady go looking for Blue. By Dominion, Blue has a young offspring, Beta, so Blue is no longer the only raptor the story follows. Dinosaurs also live all over the world by that film.
Why did Rexy spare Blue?
In Jurassic World (2015), the old Tyrannosaurus rex and Blue fight the Indominus rex on the same side, so the two animals face a common enemy rather than each other. The films give no stated reason beyond that, and the plot does not present it as an act of mercy.
Did Blue die in Jurassic World Rebirth?
No, Blue is not in the plot of Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), so that film shows no death for Blue. It follows Zora Bennett's team on the former InGen research island, and its creatures include a Mosasaurus, a Titanosaurus, a Quetzalcoatlus and the Distortus rex.
