Jurassic Park Dinosaurs: What Types of Dinosaurs Are Featured?

The films feature predators, flying reptiles, a sea monster and several engineered hybrids, and the creatures that matter most to the plot are the Tyrannosaurus rex, Velociraptor, Spinosaurus, Indominus rex, Indoraptor, Giganotosaurus, Mosasaurus and Distortus rex. The saga began with Jurassic Park (1993), directed by Steven Spielberg, where InGen's recovered ancient DNA produces living animals on a remote island. It moved to Isla Sorna in The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), also directed by Spielberg, and Jurassic Park III (2001), directed by Joe Johnston. Jurassic World (2015) then reopened a full theme park on Isla Nublar, and Jurassic World Dominion took the animals out into the wider world.

There are two kinds of creature in this series. Some are animals that the films present as bred from ancient DNA, such as the T. rex and the raptors. Others are hybrids or mutants, namely the Indominus rex, the Indoraptor and, in Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), the mutated Distortus rex. The hybrids are where the series stops being a zoo story and becomes a monster story.

The full sequence of films is laid out in the guide to Jurassic Park movies in order, and the people who run from these animals are on the Jurassic Park characters page.

Tyrannosaurus rex: The Dinosaur That Appears in Almost Every FilmSpoilers

The Tyrannosaurus rex is the series' signature animal, and it plays a decisive part in the plot of five of the seven films. In Jurassic Park 1993, a power failure disables the electric fences just as the tour vehicles are stopped in the Tyrannosaurus paddock. The animal breaks out and attacks the children and Ian Malcolm. It returns at the climax, arriving in the visitor center in time to attack the raptors, which lets Alan Grant's group escape.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park expands this into a family. Hunters led by Roland Tembo capture a baby Tyrannosaurus, its angry parents attack the team's trailers, and the adult male is shipped to the mainland. The ship crashes into the San Diego harbor and the animal escapes into the city, until Malcolm and Sarah Harding use the baby to lure it back into the cargo hold.

In Jurassic World 2015, Claire Dearing frees the old Tyrannosaurus rex, which fights the Indominus rex with help from the raptor Blue. In Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom, the Tyrannosaurus kills the villain Eli Mills, and in Jurassic World Dominion, Rexy fights a Giganotosaurus while the heroes escape by helicopter. Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World Rebirth are the two films where it does not carry a major scene.

Velociraptor: The Pack Hunters From Jurassic Park to BlueSpoilers

The Velociraptor is the series' pack hunter, and the films use it three different ways: as a threat, as a negotiation and as a partner. In Jurassic Park (1993), the raptors kill the game warden while Ellie Sattler and the warden try to restore power, and later they corner the survivors in the visitor center until the T. rex arrives.

The Lost World has raptors stalking the survivors through the jungle and killing several of Ludlow's hunters. Jurassic Park III turns the pack into a puzzle. Billy had secretly taken raptor eggs, which is why the pack is hunting the group, and Grant realizes the raptors want the eggs back and returns them. He also uses a replica of a raptor resonating chamber to confuse the pack and escape.

In Jurassic World (2015), Owen Grady trains a small pack on the island. The Indominus rex carries raptor DNA and takes control of the pack, turning them against the humans. The survivor of that pack is Blue. In Fallen Kingdom, Claire recruits Owen to find Blue, the last raptor, who is shot by mercenaries and saved by a transfusion from Zia. In Dominion, Blue turns up with a young offspring that Maisie Lockwood names Beta, and the pair are kidnapped before Owen recovers Beta at Biosyn.

Spinosaurus: The Giant Predator of Jurassic Park IIISpoilers

The Spinosaurus is the main predator of Jurassic Park III. After the group lands, the huge animal attacks and wrecks their plane, killing some of the party and stranding the survivors in the jungle. It keeps threatening them as they cross Isla Sorna on foot, alongside the raptors that hunt them for their eggs.

The animal was not only a digital creation. Reporting on the production says the film used a Spinosaurus animatronic, and that script problems dogged a shoot filmed in part in Hawaii, with Spielberg serving as executive producer. At 92 minutes, Jurassic Park III is the shortest film in the series, and the Spinosaurus is the reason many viewers remember it.

Indominus Rex: The Hybrid That Broke Jurassic WorldSpoilers

The Indominus rex is a genetically engineered hybrid created by the park's lab on Isla Nublar in Jurassic World (2015), directed by Colin Trevorrow. The park's owner wants a fresh attraction to keep visitors coming, and the animal is kept secret from most of the staff. Owen warns Claire that it is dangerously intelligent, and he is right: the Indominus tricks its handlers, breaks out and starts killing.

The creature was designed by Trevorrow with paleontologist Jack Horner, according to NBC News, which also describes the species blend that went into the design. In the story, the Indominus reveals it carries raptor DNA and takes control of the raptor pack, turning them against the humans. It is stopped when Claire frees the old Tyrannosaurus rex, which fights it with help from Blue, and the park's Mosasaurus finally pulls the Indominus into the lagoon.

The corporate plan for a bigger attraction collapses when the animal outwits the people who made it. Security chief Vic Hoskins, who saw the crisis as a chance to use Owen's raptors as military weapons, is killed when his plan falls apart.

Indoraptor: The Auction Hybrid of Fallen KingdomSpoilers

The Indoraptor is the new hybrid at the center of the auction in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), directed by J. A. Bayona. Eli Mills plans to sell the captured animals at a secret auction at the Lockwood estate, along with the Indoraptor, and the film shifts from island adventure to a chase inside a mansion.

At the auction the Indoraptor escapes and kills several buyers and guards before it hunts Owen, Claire and Maisie through the house. The confined rooms make the animal feel like a stalking predator rather than a stampede. The fight ends when Blue attacks the hybrid and it dies on a skull display.

The Indoraptor makes a useful comparison with the Indominus rex. The Indominus is a hybrid loose in a large park, whereas the Indoraptor hunts inside a house, and the films use each for a different style of scare.

Giganotosaurus: The Predator That Challenges Rexy in Jurassic World DominionSpoilers

The Giganotosaurus is the dinosaur that Jurassic World Dominion uses to challenge the T. rex, and it appears at the climax inside the Biosyn site. Dominion is set in a world where dinosaurs live all over the planet, and Biosyn Genetics runs a large sanctuary in Italy's Dolomites. When Lewis Dodgson tries to destroy evidence by burning the locusts, some escape and start a wildfire, and the heroes are chased by a Giganotosaurus.

The group escapes by helicopter while the Giganotosaurus fights Rexy the T. rex. At 147 minutes, Dominion is the longest of the three Jurassic World films released before Rebirth.

Distortus Rex (D-Rex): The Mutant of Jurassic World RebirthSpoilers

The Distortus rex, nicknamed the D-Rex, is the mutated predator that haunts the abandoned InGen complex on Ile Saint-Hubert in Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), directed by Gareth Edwards. Unlike the Indominus rex, which a lab designed on purpose, this animal is presented as a mutant, and it is the last obstacle between Zora Bennett's team and the boats.

It waits at the old complex where the two groups of survivors regroup. When Martin Krebs snatches the samples and bolts, the D-Rex kills him. It then wrecks the rescue helicopter, which leaves a getaway by boat as the only option. Duncan Kincaid draws it off with a flare, and a second flare in the sky afterward shows he lived and was picked up.

The D-Rex is still alive on the island when the film ends. JoBlo reports that Duncan was originally written to die and that the studio requested footage of his survival, which tested better. The same report says the survivors leave room for a sequel, and the latest on that is on the next Jurassic World movie page.

Mosasaurus: The Sea Monster of Jurassic World and RebirthSpoilers

The Mosasaurus is the series' sea monster, and it delivers the final blow in Jurassic World (2015). The park's Mosasaurus finally pulls the Indominus rex into the lagoon, ending the fight that Rexy and Blue had started.

It returns in Jurassic World Rebirth, where it is one of the three giants the team is hunting. The team takes a sample from a Mosasaurus, and the mercenary Bobby Atwater is killed in the attack.

Pteranodon and Quetzalcoatlus: The Flying Reptiles in the FilmsSpoilers

The flying reptiles in the franchise are the Pteranodon and the Quetzalcoatlus, and they turn up whenever a film needs a threat from above. In Jurassic Park III, the group is attacked by Pteranodons near an aviary, and the closing shot has Pteranodons flying over the ocean.

In Jurassic World (2015), Claire's assistant Zara is killed in a pterosaur attack after the aviary is breached. In Dominion, a Quetzalcoatlus attack brings down Kayla Watts' plane, and Owen, Claire and Kayla survive on their own before they reunite. In Rebirth, the team gets an egg from a Quetzalcoatlus nest, which completes the air portion of the three samples.

Titanosaurus: The Big Three Land Giant in RebirthSpoilers

The Titanosaurus is the land animal among the three huge dinosaurs that the team in Jurassic World Rebirth is sent to sample. The big 3 dinosaurs in that film are one from the sea, one from the land and one from the air: the Mosasaurus, the Titanosaurus and the Quetzalcoatlus.

On the island the group gets a sample from a Titanosaurus, and the mission is meant to lead to a heart disease treatment.

Dilophosaurus: The Small SpitterSpoilers

The Dilophosaurus appears by name in Jurassic World Dominion, where it kills Lewis Dodgson while he is fleeing the Biosyn site. The earlier film Jurassic Park (1993) has a spitting dinosaur kill the programmer Dennis Nedry before he can leave the island.

Both deaths belong to characters who tried to profit from the animals, and in both cases a smaller creature handles the job rather than a giant one.

What Is the Scariest Dinosaur in Jurassic Park? My RankingSpoilers

In my opinion, the scariest dinosaur in the series is the Tyrannosaurus rex from Jurassic Park (1993), and the reason is the setup rather than the size. The power failure, the stopped vehicles and the children inside are what make the paddock scene work, and the animal does not need to be the biggest or the cleverest to be the most frightening.

Here is my ranking of the main dinosaurs for fear, and it is only my opinion:

  1. Tyrannosaurus rex. The 1993 paddock breakout is the standard that every later scare is measured against, and the animal keeps its edge by returning in five of the seven films.
  2. Velociraptor. It could be argued that the raptors in the visitor center are scarier, because they hunt as a team and think through a problem. They also give the series its most interesting twist in Jurassic Park III, when Grant discovers they are after their eggs.
  3. Indoraptor. Perhaps the best use of a hybrid, since the mansion chase in Fallen Kingdom gives it nowhere to run and the audience nowhere to look.
  4. Indominus rex. It is the most dangerous on paper, since it carries raptor DNA and takes control of the pack, but it is a monster built by committee and it lacks the specific cruelty of the raptors.
  5. Spinosaurus. It wrecks a plane in Jurassic Park III, which is a great introduction, though the rest of the film gives it fewer set pieces than it deserves.
  6. Giganotosaurus. Big and loud in Dominion, but its main job is to be a rival for Rexy.
  7. Distortus rex. The D-Rex is a strong design in Rebirth and kills the film's villain, though it appears too late for me to rank it higher.

If you want the scariest dinosaur for a first viewing, start with Jurassic Park 1993 and watch the paddock scene. If you want to see how the films stack up as a whole, my full verdicts are on the Jurassic Park movies ranked page.
