Who Is Chris Redfield in the Resident Evil Movies?

Chris Redfield is the older brother of Claire Redfield in the Resident Evil films. Wentworth Miller plays him in Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010), directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, and Robbie Amell plays him in Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021), directed by Johannes Roberts. In the 2021 film he is a member of the police special team sent to the Spencer Mansion. The credits list him as Chris Redfield, with a Young Chris role as well.

That is a small footprint, and it can surprise people who know him from the games. The Capcom games are where Chris began, and fans will recognize his unit in the 2021 film as the game version's S.T.A.R.S. (the film plots here call it the police special team). The BSAA, the group he is tied to in Resident Evil 5, plays no part in either film, and the game voice work of Roger Craig Smith is separate from the film credits, where Miller and Amell are the actors.

The six main films, four of them directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, follow Alice, played by Milla Jovovich. She was created for the films and is not in the games, so most of the screen time goes to her. Chris turns up once in that run, in Afterlife, as a prisoner who needs rescuing.

Welcome to Raccoon City is where the character gets a proper introduction, as a brother, a team member and a man heading into a mansion that has already swallowed another team. Zach Cregger's Resident Evil (2026) does not feature him: it follows a courier named Bryan through a night at Raccoon City General Hospital. Chris Redfield's Story Across the FilmsSpoilers

Chris has two separate story arcs, one in each continuity, and they do not connect. In Afterlife, the first run's fourth film, Alice and a dazed Claire Redfield fly to Los Angeles, where a city of undead surrounds a prison. A few survivors are trapped inside, and the group frees Chris Redfield, who is held in the cells. The survivors then face a huge executioner with an axe. Reaching the ship Arcadia turns out to be the real goal, and the ship is revealed as an Umbrella trap. Alice fights Albert Wesker aboard it and beats him, and he escapes by parachute.

In Welcome to Raccoon City, set in 1998, Chris grew up in the Raccoon City orphanage with his younger sister. When Claire returns to the dying town and tries to warn him that Umbrella is up to something, infected people close in on her. Chris, Jill Valentine, Richard Aiken, Brad Vickers and Wesker are sent to the Spencer Mansion to look for a missing team. They find zombies there, Richard dies and Brad is bitten. Wesker proves to be working secretly for another side and is after the virus created by William Birkin.

When Raccoon City is destroyed, Chris is among those who get out. For the order in which these films fit together, see Resident Evil movies in order.

Chris Redfield's Sister, Partners and Allies

Chris's central relationship is with his sister, Claire Redfield. In Welcome to Raccoon City, Kaya Scodelario's Claire is the younger sibling who left the orphanage and comes back to warn him about Umbrella. In Afterlife, Ali Larter's Claire is part of the group that frees him.

His closest colleague in Welcome to Raccoon City is Jill Valentine, played by Hannah John-Kamen, who travels to the Spencer Mansion on the same team. In Afterlife, Sienna Guillory's Jill shows up in the closing shots, leading Umbrella's aircraft under mind control. Neither film makes a love interest part of his story, so the question of a partner has no screen answer beyond his teammates.

Albert Wesker is the figure who links his two films, played by Tom Hopper in Welcome to Raccoon City and Shawn Roberts in Afterlife. In the 2021 film Wesker walks in beside him on the mansion mission while serving another side. In Afterlife, Wesker is the man Alice defeats on the Arcadia.

The rookie officer Leon Kennedy, played by Avan Jogia, is a fellow survivor in Welcome to Raccoon City. Chris is on the police special team while Leon begins his first shift, and both leave the tunnel alive. The post credit scene introduces Ada Wong to Wesker, not to Chris.

Does Chris Redfield Survive?Spoilers

Chris lives through everything the films show of him, and neither appearance ends with his death. In Welcome to Raccoon City he is one of the group that climbs out of the tunnel while Umbrella reports the city as having no survivors, standing alongside Claire, Jill, Leon and young Sherry Birkin.

Afterlife leaves his future open. After being freed from the prison cells, he is on the Arcadia when the film cuts to Jill Valentine leading an Umbrella squadron toward the ship. Retribution, the next film, picks up from there, and Chris is not in its credits. Beyond the screen, his game story continues separately, as it does for the rest of the cast.

Best Chris Redfield Moments in the Films

In my opinion, the cell rescue in Afterlife is his most useful appearance, because it shows how the film moves from a lonely trek to a crowded set piece. Afterlife was the first film in the saga shot in 3D, with a $60 million budget and about $300 million worldwide according to Box Office Mojo, and the prison sequence with the axe wielding executioner is where that format earns its place. Chris arrives as a prisoner rather than a hero, which is a fair way to introduce a major character into a story that belongs to Alice.

It could be argued that Welcome to Raccoon City gives him better material. The mansion mission is the closest the films come to a classic horror setup: a police team, a missing team, a house with zombies in it, and a teammate who is quietly working for someone else. Richard dying and Brad being bitten make the scene dangerous, and Chris is there for it. Perhaps the weakest point is that the film splits its attention across so many characters that Chris never gets a moment to himself. That being said, it earned only $41.9 million worldwide on a $25 million budget, according to The Numbers.

Why was Chris Redfield so strong?
