They appear across three runs: those six films, the reboot Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021), and Zach Cregger's Resident Evil (2026), which uses new characters.

Resident Evil Characters: Who Appears in Each Run of Movies

The Resident Evil movies follow three separate casts: Alice and her allies in the six films from Resident Evil (2002) to Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, Claire, Jill, Chris and Leon in the 2021 reboot Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, and a fresh set of civilians in Zach Cregger's 2026 film. Knowing which run a character belongs to makes the list far easier to follow, and the Resident Evil movies in order page shows how the films line up. The Resident Evil timeline places each character in the story. The Japanese animated films are a separate set of releases and sit outside this list.

Alice and the First Six Films

Alice is the lead of the first six films and the only character who appears in all of them, played by Milla Jovovich and billed first every time. She was created for the films and is not a character from the games. She first appears in Resident Evil (2002), directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, waking in a mansion bathroom with no memory. You can read more on the Alice Resident Evil page.

The other leads of that first film are Rain (Michelle Rodriguez), a commando on the Umbrella team, Matt (Eric Mabius), who says he is a cop, and One (Colin Salmon), who leads the squad. Rain and One both return in Resident Evil: Retribution. Spence (James Purefoy) is the man posted to the mansion alongside Alice.

The Red Queen is the computer that seals everyone inside the Hive. In Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, Ever Anderson is credited as Young Alicia / Red Queen, and in Retribution Wesker says the Red Queen AI now controls Umbrella. Her full profile is on the Red Queen Resident Evil page.

Who Are the Main Female Characters?

The main female characters in the movies are Alice, Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield and Ada Wong, with Rain also prominent in the first film. Jill is played by Sienna Guillory in Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Resident Evil: Afterlife and Retribution, and by Hannah John-Kamen in the reboot. Read more on Jill Valentine.

Claire Redfield is played by Ali Larter in Resident Evil: Extinction, Afterlife and The Final Chapter, where she leads a convoy of survivors across a ruined world in Extinction. Kaya Scodelario plays her in the reboot, billed first. Her arc runs from convoy leader in the Anderson films to the first billed lead of the reboot. See Claire Redfield.

Ada Wong is played by Li Bingbing in Retribution, where she is described as a former agent of Wesker, and by Lily Gao in the reboot. The reboot's post credit scene shows Wesker waking in a body bag, where a woman gives him sunglasses and introduces herself as Ada Wong. See Ada Wong.

Other women in the films include Angela Ashford (Sophie Vavasseur) in Apocalypse, K-Mart (Spencer Locke) in Extinction and Afterlife, and Sherry Birkin (Holly de Barros) in the reboot.

Who Are the Main Male Characters?

The main male characters are Chris Redfield, Leon Kennedy, Carlos Olivera and Barry Burton, with Albert Wesker as the franchise's recurring antagonist. Chris is played by Wentworth Miller in Afterlife, where he is held in the prison cells, and by Robbie Amell in the reboot, where he is Claire's older brother. His page is Chris Redfield.

Leon Kennedy is played by Johann Urb in Retribution, where he leads a rescue team, and by Avan Jogia in the reboot, where he is a rookie cop on his first shift. See Leon Kennedy. Barry Burton, played by Kevin Durand, appears in Retribution, where he sacrifices himself so the others can get away.

Carlos Olivera is played by Oded Fehr in Apocalypse, Extinction and Retribution. L.J. (Mike Epps) appears in Apocalypse and Extinction, and Luther (Boris Kodjoe) appears in Afterlife and Retribution.

Who Are the Villains?

The villains of the films are Albert Wesker, Dr. Isaacs, Major Cain, William Birkin and Chief Irons. Wesker is played by Jason O'Mara in Extinction, Shawn Roberts in Afterlife, Retribution and The Final Chapter, and Tom Hopper in the reboot. His profile is at Albert Wesker. For the company behind them, see the Umbrella Corporation page.

Dr. Isaacs is played by Iain Glen in Apocalypse, Extinction and The Final Chapter. Major Cain (Thomas Kretschmann) seals the exit bridge from Raccoon City in Apocalypse. In the reboot, Neal McDonough plays William Birkin and Donal Logue plays Chief Irons.

Which Monsters Appear?

The monsters include Nemesis, the Licker, Lisa Trevor, the Axeman and the mutated Birkin, while the zombies are the constant threat in every film. Nemesis (Matthew G. Taylor) is a huge engineered soldier that Umbrella releases in Apocalypse. The Licker appears in the first film, and a huge axe wielding executioner (credited as Axeman, Ray Olubowale) confronts the survivors in Afterlife. In the reboot, Lisa Trevor (Marina Mazepa) is a girl harmed by Umbrella's experiments, and Birkin becomes a monster after injecting himself with a new virus.

Characters in Resident Evil (2026)

Zach Cregger's Resident Evil (2026) uses new characters, and none of Claire, Jill, Chris, Leon or Wesker appear in its top billed cast. Bryan (Austin Abrams) is a medical courier with no combat skills who takes a well paid delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital on a snowy night. Around him are Paul (Paul Walter Hauser), Maxine (Kali Reis) and Carl (Zach Cherry), a lead scientist in an Umbrella laboratory. Cregger also voices an intercom. The film never names the Umbrella Corporation's virus outright.

Why Alice Changes How the Game Characters Work

In my opinion, Alice is the key to the whole cast, because an original lead lets the Anderson films treat the game characters as guests rather than owners of the story. Jill arrives in Apocalypse billed second, Claire leads the convoy in Extinction, Chris is found in the prison cells in Afterlife, and Leon, Barry and Ada all turn up in the Retribution rescue. Each is introduced inside an Alice story, which is why none of them gets more than two or three films.

The 2021 reboot makes the opposite choice. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, directed by Johannes Roberts, puts Claire, Jill, Chris, Wesker and Leon in the same city in 1998, so it works as an ensemble with Claire billed first. It could be argued that this crowding is the cost: Leon is a rookie on his first shift and Ada Wong only arrives in the post credit scene.

Perhaps the boldest move is Resident Evil (2026). Bryan has no combat skills and reacts the way most people would, so the film asks the audience to fear Raccoon City General Hospital instead of cheering for a hero. That is closer to the first film, where Alice wakes with no memory and the Red Queen's laser corridor kills trained commandos, than to the action of Extinction or Retribution.

Recasting follows the same split. Jill and Claire each get three films with one actor (Sienna Guillory and Ali Larter) before a new actor takes over in the reboot, while Wesker changes actor three times, with Shawn Roberts holding the role for three films.

Side Characters and Names Missing From the Films

The side characters are the supporting group around each lead, such as Terri Morales (Sandrine Holt) in Apocalypse, Becky (Aryana Engineer) in Retribution, and Richard Aiken (Chad Rook) in the reboot. Rebecca Chambers and Ethan Winters are not among the top billed cast of these films. To see how the films treat the source material, read Resident Evil games vs movies.
