What Is Resident Evil Apocalypse About?

Resident Evil Apocalypse follows Alice as the T-virus escapes the Hive and reaches Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation seals the survivors in with the infected. It picks up directly from resident evil 2002, in which Alice and Matt Addison escape the Hive, the underground research facility overrun by zombies, only for Umbrella to recapture them.

The virus then spreads into nearby Raccoon City. Umbrella quarantines the city and leaves the people inside trapped, a bit like a hotel locked from the outside while the fire alarm is already going. Alice comes out of captivity changed by the virus and teams up with other survivors, including Jill Valentine and Carlos Olivera. Their goal is to find the missing daughter of a scientist tied to the outbreak, while Umbrella's supersoldier Nemesis hunts them. Resident Evil: Apocalypse Soundtrack and Score

Jeff Danna composed the score for Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004), directed by Alexander Witt, and the music came out on two albums: "Resident Evil: Apocalypse: Music From and Inspired by the Motion Picture" from Roadrunner Records on August 31, 2004, and "Resident Evil: Apocalypse: Original Motion Picture Score" from Varèse Sarabande on September 28, 2004.

The two releases cover different ground. The Roadrunner album is the soundtrack in the usual sense, a collection of music from and inspired by the film, and it runs to 18 tracks. The Varèse Sarabande album is the score alone, which means Danna's orchestral and electronic cues for the Raccoon City outbreak, also at 18 tracks. The soundtrack album arrived about ten days before the film opened in the US on September 10, 2004 (a few weeks ahead of the score album), so fans could hear the music before they saw the film.

A new composer for each early entry is the pattern here. Marilyn Manson scored Resident Evil (2002), Danna took the second film, and Charlie Clouser followed on Resident Evil: Extinction. For the composers and music across the whole series, see the resident evil soundtrack page on Cinvibe.

Resident Evil Apocalypse Plot in FullSpoilers

The full plot of Resident Evil Apocalypse runs from the quarantine of Raccoon City to Alice waking in an Umbrella lab, where Dr. Isaacs reveals that her escape was part of Umbrella's plan. Alice and Matt escape the Hive, but Umbrella captures them and the T-virus gets loose in the city. Umbrella quarantines Raccoon City, and Major Cain seals the exit bridge, trapping the living and the undead together.

Alice, now enhanced by the virus, joins former police officer Jill Valentine, soldier Carlos Olivera, reporter Terri Morales, L.J. and others. They agree to find Angela Ashford, the daughter of Dr. Ashford, in return for a safe route out of the city. Dr. Ashford's research led to the T-virus, which was originally meant to treat his daughter's genetic condition. Angela explains that an antivirus exists that can stop the infection, and Alice uses it to cure Carlos.

Umbrella then releases Nemesis, a huge engineered soldier, to kill the survivors and test his abilities. At the extraction point, Cain kills Dr. Ashford and forces Alice to fight Nemesis. Alice wins but stops when she realizes he is Matt. Nemesis turns on Cain's troops and dies protecting her. The survivors take the helicopter and throw Cain out to the zombies.

A nuclear warhead then destroys the city, and the blast brings the helicopter down. Alice shields Angela and is badly impaled, while news reports blame a power plant meltdown and hide Umbrella's role. Alice wakes in an Umbrella lab and escapes with Carlos, Jill, L.J. and Angela, and Dr. Isaacs reveals that her escape was part of Umbrella's plan.

When Was Resident Evil Apocalypse Released?

Resident Evil Apocalypse opened in US theaters on September 10, 2004, reached UK theaters on October 8, 2004, and opened in Australia on October 21, 2004. The US date comes from The Numbers, and the UK and Australian dates come from Box Office Mojo. All three are reported theatrical releases.

The film earned about $51 million domestic and $78 million international, for about $129 million worldwide on a $45 million budget. That split set the pattern for the Anderson era: modest US grosses with the bigger share of the money coming from overseas. Extinction later reached about $148 million worldwide.

Resident Evil Apocalypse Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Resident Evil Apocalypse has Nemesis turn on Umbrella's troops and die protecting Alice, the survivors escape Raccoon City by helicopter, and a nuclear blast destroys the city. In my opinion, the most interesting choice is how the film treats Nemesis, because it hands the monster a second life as a tragic figure. Alice stops mid fight when she realizes he is Matt, and Nemesis turns on Cain's forces and dies protecting her. It is a very Frankenstein beat, and it lands because the creature design carries it: a practical costume of about 65 lb, with only the eye touched by CGI, gives him real weight in the frame.

The nuclear strike is Umbrella's cleanup. The warhead brings the helicopter down, Alice shields Angela and is left badly impaled, and the news blames a power plant meltdown, which hides Umbrella's role. Alice is left for dead, and the cover story is the film's quiet punchline about how companies manage a disaster.

Then comes the twist. Alice wakes in an Umbrella lab, breaks out with Carlos, Jill, L.J. and Angela, and Dr. Isaacs reveals that her escape was part of Umbrella's plan. It could be argued that this reframes the whole outbreak as an experiment on her, which is exactly what the sequel needs. It sets up resident evil extinction, where a clone of Alice dies in a trap and the real Alice wanders a world that the T-virus has turned mostly to desert. Extinction describes that jump as five years on, so the story moves well beyond this film's closing scene.

Is There a Post Credit Scene in Resident Evil Apocalypse?Spoilers

Yes, Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) has a single mid credits scene, and it has nothing to do with Alice, Jill or Nemesis. Part way through the credits, the film plays a slice of the "Regenerate" teaser, a fake commercial for a skin product in which the person using it ends up turning into a zombie.

In my opinion, it works as a small joke at the expense of the beauty industry, a bit like a cheeky ad break landing after a very grim episode of television. It does not set up the next film, so you can safely leave once the main story has finished. The hook for resident evil extinction is Dr. Isaacs' reveal in the final scene, not anything in the credits.

Where Was Resident Evil Apocalypse Filmed?

Resident Evil: Apocalypse was filmed in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and Toronto stood in for Raccoon City. The production used about 47 locations across Ontario in total, including Toronto City Hall and the Prince Edward Viaduct. The Prince Edward Viaduct was closed for three days, and the destruction of Toronto City Hall was staged with a 1/6 scale model.
