What Is Resident Evil: Extinction About?

Resident Evil: Extinction is a survival horror film set five years after the Raccoon City outbreak, in which the T-virus has turned most of the planet into desert and the Umbrella Corporation keeps cloning Alice. It is the third entry in the saga, following Resident Evil Apocalypse.

How does Resident Evil: Extinction start? A clone of Alice wakes in a mansion, works her way through its security traps and is killed by a mine. Her body is then dumped in a pit with many other failed clones made by Umbrella. The film cuts to the world outside, where the real Alice wanders alone and finds a notebook with hints of a safe, uninfected region in Alaska.

Elsewhere, Claire Redfield leads a convoy of survivors across the wasteland, including Carlos, L.J. and K-Mart. L.J. has been bitten and is hiding it from the others. Infected crows attack the group, and Alice arrives to save them with her telekinetic powers.

The film sits in the middle of the Alice story. If you are working through the series, our guide to Resident Evil movies in order shows where it falls, and the Resident Evil timeline places it five years after the outbreak.

Resident Evil: Extinction Plot ExplainedSpoilers

The full plot of Resident Evil: Extinction follows Alice and Claire's convoy from the desert to Umbrella's underground facility, where Alice defeats a mutated Dr. Isaacs. After the crow attack, Alice persuades Claire to head for Alaska, and the convoy follows her lead.

Meanwhile, Dr. Isaacs, who is breeding a new kind of zombie, sends his creations to ambush the convoy. He does this against Wesker's orders. Most of the convoy dies in the attack, and L.J. finally turns and bites Carlos.

What is the plot twist in Extinction? There are two. The first is that Alice breaks free of Umbrella's remote control. The second is that the White Queen tells Alice her blood could cure the T-virus, which explains why Umbrella keeps cloning her.

Alice and K-Mart track Isaacs to the company's underground facility. At the entrance, Carlos sacrifices himself by driving a tanker loaded with dynamite into the zombie horde, which clears the way. The others escape by helicopter, but Alice stays behind to finish the job. Inside, Isaacs has mutated into a Tyrant, and Alice lures him into a replica of the Hive's laser corridor and defeats him.

The film then moves to Tokyo, where Wesker learns that the North American facility is lost. Alice appears at the meeting.

Premiere, Release Dates and Ratings

Resident Evil: Extinction reached US theaters on September 21, 2007, Australia on October 11, 2007 and the UK on October 12, 2007. Reporting on the film does not name a premiere date, city or venue, so the release dates are the firm anchors.

Was Resident Evil: Extinction a hit or a flop? It was a hit by the numbers. The film opened at number one in North America with about $23 million from 2,828 theaters, and Box Office Mojo records $50.6 million domestic and $97.1 million international. That adds up to $147.7 million worldwide against a $45 million budget, or a little over three times what it cost. It out earned Resident Evil Apocalypse, though it made less than half of what Resident Evil Afterlife took later. For the series figures, see Resident Evil box office.

What about a parents guide for Resident Evil: Extinction? The film is rated R in the US, 15 in the UK and MA 15+ in Australia. Expect zombie attacks, infected crows swarming a convoy, a character who is bitten and turns, and a tanker explosion.

Resident Evil: Extinction Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Resident Evil: Extinction means Alice has stopped being a hunted subject and become a threat Umbrella has to plan around. After she defeats the mutated Isaacs, a surviving clone shuts down the facility's systems. The story then moves to Tokyo, where Wesker is told the North American base has been lost, and Alice appears at the executive meeting and promises that she and her clones are coming for him.

What does that actually say about the plot? In my opinion, the key idea is the clones. Umbrella spent the whole film copying Alice to get at her blood, and the last scene turns the copies into an army on her side. It is a neat reversal, and it sets up the next film, in which Alice raids Umbrella's Tokyo base.

It could be argued that the ending also reads as a quiet retcon of Alaska. The notebook promises a safe region in the north, but Alice never goes there in this film, and Afterlife has her searching Alaska for a rumored haven called Arcadia. In effect, Extinction trades the road trip for a revenge story.

Is Resident Evil: Extinction good? Perhaps, if you want a lean, dusty set piece film with a clear villain. The middle is stronger than the finish: the crow attack and the tanker sacrifice are the memorable moments, and the Tyrant fight, set in a replica of the Hive's laser corridor, leans on the first film's best trick. For where it lands among the others, see our Resident Evil movies ranked page.
