Resident Evil Soundtrack: Every Composer and Notable Song

The Resident Evil soundtrack covers eight live action films, each scored by a different composer or team, from Marco Beltrami and Marilyn Manson on Resident Evil (2002) to Hays Holladay on Resident Evil (2026). Only two films have a named soundtrack album, Resident Evil: Afterlife and Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, and only one song, A Perfect Circle's "The Outsider (Apocalypse Remix)", stands out.

Resident Evil Soundtrack Composers, Film by Film

Eight live action Resident Evil films have each had a different composer or team, from Marco Beltrami and Marilyn Manson on Resident Evil (2002) to Hays Holladay on Resident Evil (2026). The list follows the Resident Evil movies in order and leaves out the Japanese animated films.

Paul W. S. Anderson's run with Milla Jovovich as Alice. Alice was created for the films and is not in the games, so these six films are the series' own story.

  • Resident Evil 2002: Marco Beltrami and Marilyn Manson. The "Resident Evil" album came out on Roadrunner Records on March 11, 2002, and its cue "Red Queen" is named for the computer that seals the Hive.
  • Resident Evil Apocalypse: Jeff Danna. The score album, "Resident Evil: Apocalypse: Original Motion Picture Score", was released by Varèse Sarabande on September 28, 2004, with cues such as "Alice Battles the Nemesis" and "The Nemesis vs. S.T.A.R.S." A separate songs album, "Resident Evil: Apocalypse: Music From and Inspired by the Motion Picture", arrived on Roadrunner Records on August 31, 2004.
  • Resident Evil Extinction: Charlie Clouser. Lakeshore Records issued the 34 track "Resident Evil: Extinction: Original Motion Picture Score" on December 18, 2007, including "Clone Awake", "Convoy" and "To the Hive". Its songs album, "Resident Evil: Extinction: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack", came out on Lakeshore on September 18, 2007.
  • Resident Evil Afterlife: tomandandy. Milan released "Resident Evil: Afterlife: Music From the Motion Picture" on September 7, 2010, and its cues are named for places, such as "Tokyo" and "Los Angeles".
  • Resident Evil Retribution: Tom Hajdu. Milan released "Resident Evil: Retribution: Music From the Motion Picture" on September 11, 2012, with cues including "Tokyo Revisited" and "Suburbia".
  • Resident Evil The Final Chapter: Paul Haslinger. Milan released "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" on January 26, 2017, and its best known cues by title are "Return to the Hive", "Entering Raccoon City" and "Seal the Hive".

The reboot. Resident Evil Welcome to Raccoon City, directed by Johannes Roberts, was scored by Mark Korven. Milan released "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" on November 19, 2021. Its cues include "RPD", "Chasing Lisa" and "Mansion Search".

Zach Cregger's film. Resident Evil 2026 was scored by Hays Holladay. Milan Records released "Resident Evil: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack", a 29 track album, on September 18, 2026. Cues such as "Main Titles", "Snowcrawl", "The Barnyard" and "Meet the Fenners" follow the snowbound courier story, and the new Resident Evil movie coverage picks up from there.

For the actors in each film, the Resident Evil cast has the full lists.

Resident Evil Soundtrack Songs and Albums

The best known songs in the Resident Evil films are "The Outsider (Apocalypse Remix)" by A Perfect Circle in Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010), "Hexes" by Bassnectar and Chino Moreno in Resident Evil: Retribution (2012), and "Don't Be Afraid" by L'Arc-en-Ciel, which was written for Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016). No single theme song runs through the series, because every film changed composer and the song choices change with them.

The first two films lean on rock and metal albums. The soundtrack album for Resident Evil (2002) carries tracks such as "My Plague (New Abuse mix)", "The Fight Song (Slipknot remix)" and "Halleluja". The soundtrack album for Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) adds "Nymphetamine", "Mein Teil" and "The Outsider (Resident Renholdër mix)", which is an earlier cut of the same A Perfect Circle track that returns in Afterlife.

Resident Evil: Extinction (2007) has the most song driven album of the Anderson run. It includes "Stupid Crazy" by Shadows Fall, "I'm So Sick (T-Virus remix)" by Flyleaf and The Legion of Doom, "My World" by Emigrate, "Duality (Project Alice String remix)" by Bayside, "One Love (Extinction remix)" by Aiden and The Legion of Doom, "Deathcar" by Fightstar, "I, Suicide" by Throwdown and "White Rabbit (SPC Eco mix)" by Collide. Chimaira, The Bled, City Sleeps and Searchlight also appear with "Paralyzed", "Asleep on the Frontlines (Appliantz remix)", "Catch Me" and "Contagious".

In Afterlife, a short segment of "The Outsider (Apocalypse Remix)" plays during the fight between Alice and Wesker, and the song returns over the end credits. In Retribution, "Hexes" plays over the end credits, and it also opens the film's album. The Final Chapter closes the Anderson saga with "Don't Be Afraid", the one song in the franchise that a source describes as written for its film.

The reboot Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021), directed by Johannes Roberts, is set in 1998 and fills its soundtrack with licensed pop and rock, placed against the violence on screen:

  • "What's Up?" by 4 Non Blondes plays as a man on his phone in a parked car is attacked and killed.
  • "Any Way You Want It" by Journey plays as a police officer is attacked.
  • "Crush" by Jennifer Paige plays while Leon sleeps and a truck crashes in front of the R.P.D.
  • "My Favorite Game" by The Cardigans plays just before a truck driver runs down a man on the road.
  • "More and More" by Webb Pierce plays as Claire hitchhikes to the town.
  • "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight" by Richard & Linda Thompson plays as Leon gets up and goes to the diner.

"It's a Heartache" by Bonnie Tyler and "Time of Our Lives" by Jess Thristan are also in the film. Mark Korven's score has its own album, covered under the composers.

Resident Evil (2026), directed by Zach Cregger, has no songs on record, and its Hays Holladay score album from Milan Records stands on its own.

Our picks: the best songs in the Resident Evil films (opinion)

  • "The Outsider (Apocalypse Remix)" by A Perfect Circle: it bookends the Alice and Wesker fight in Afterlife and then returns over the credits, which gives the film a proper sign off.
  • "Don't Be Afraid" by L'Arc-en-Ciel: it was written for The Final Chapter, so it feels made for the end of the saga rather than borrowed.
  • "Hexes" by Bassnectar and Chino Moreno: perhaps the loudest way any film in the series leaves the room, and it opens the Retribution album too.
  • "My Favorite Game" by The Cardigans: the polished pop sound sitting just before a man is run down on the road is a darkly funny choice.
  • "Crush" by Jennifer Paige: Leon sleeping through a truck crash outside the R.P.D. is the best joke in Welcome to Raccoon City, and this song sells it.
  • "More and More" by Webb Pierce: old country music over Claire's hitchhike gives her arrival a lonely, wary mood.
