Resident Evil Box Office Worldwide: Every Film at a Glance

The eight live action Resident Evil films have grossed about $1.67 billion worldwide, and the table gives the budget, domestic gross, international gross and worldwide gross of each one, drawn from Box Office Mojo and The Numbers. (The Japanese animated films are not counted here.)

The saga runs in three stretches. Paul W. S. Anderson's six films, led by Milla Jovovich as Alice (a character created for the films, not taken from the games), grossed about $1.23 billion worldwide on $288 million in combined budgets (a sum of the figures in the table). The reboot Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021), directed by Johannes Roberts, took in about $42 million. The most recent film, Resident Evil (2026), directed by Zach Cregger and distributed by Sony Pictures through Columbia, sits at about $400 million worldwide on a reported $75 million budget.

Add all eight together and the total comes to about $1.67 billion worldwide, made up of roughly $446 million domestic and $1.23 billion international. The international share is the story of the series, since more than 70 percent of the money came from outside the United States and Canada.

The budget figures carry one wrinkle. Box Office Mojo gives $33 million for Resident Evil (2002), while The Numbers lists $35 million and slightly different international and worldwide totals, so the table uses the Box Office Mojo figures for that film. Studio budgets also leave out marketing, which is why a gross on its own never tells you the profit.

Is Resident Evil a Hit or a Flop? The Numbers Explained

Resident Evil is a hit by the measure that matters to studios: seven of the eight films grossed at least roughly three times their reported budget, and only Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City fell short of that. In my opinion that verdict holds up, and the multiples below are my own arithmetic, worldwide gross divided by reported budget.

The first three films were steady, not spectacular. Resident Evil (2002), directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, took about $103 million on $33 million, roughly 3.1 times its budget. Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004), directed by Alexander Witt, managed about 2.9 times on $45 million. Resident Evil: Extinction (2007), directed by Russell Mulcahy, reached about 3.3 times on the same budget. Those are respectable returns for an R rated zombie film, though they leave little room once marketing is paid for. Perhaps that explains why both sequels sat at $45 million.

The turn came with Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010), Anderson's first 3D film. It earned $300 million worldwide on $60 million, and about $240 million of that came from outside the United States, roughly 80 percent. The domestic gross of about $60 million was the best of Anderson's run, yet the overseas audience was four times larger. Resident Evil: Retribution (2012) cost $65 million, the most of the six, and slipped to $240 million, with domestic takings falling to about $42 million.

The cleverest bit of arithmetic in the series belongs to Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. The budget dropped to $40 million and the film grossed about $312 million, the most of the six, even though it collected only about $27 million in the United States. Roughly 91 percent of its money was international, which makes it about 7.8 times its budget, the best multiple in the whole saga. Perhaps the plain lesson is that the series had stopped being an American box office story long before it ended.

Then comes the stumble. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021) was a lean $25 million production and still grossed only about $42 million, around 1.7 times its budget. A gross at that level usually does not cover the theater share and the marketing, so, in my opinion, it is the one clear disappointment.

The biggest surprise is the latest film. Resident Evil (2026), written and directed by Zach Cregger (who also made Weapons), opened to about $60 million in the United States, a franchise best according to Deadline, and about $108.3 million worldwide, according to TheWrap. It has since reached about $400 million worldwide on a reported $75 million budget, around 5.3 times the cost. Its domestic gross of about $158 million is more than any single earlier film by a wide margin. The split between domestic and international gross is also different: about 39 percent of the 2026 money came from the United States and Canada, against about 22 percent for Anderson's six films combined. The final totals could still move.
