Ghostface: The Scream Killer and Every Person Behind the Mask

Ghostface is the masked killer of the Scream series, a black robe and ghost mask worn by a different set of human killers in each of seven films, from Scream (1996) to Scream 7 (2026). The name belongs to the costume and the menacing phone voice, not to one person, so who is under the mask changes with every film.

Who Brings Ghostface to Life?

Who Is Ghostface in the Scream Movies?

Ghostface is the killer persona of the Scream series: a black hooded robe, a white ghost mask and a habit of phoning victims to talk about scary films before the attack begins. The name describes the disguise rather than one man or woman. Across the seven films, from Scream (1996), directed by Wes Craven, to Scream 7 (2026), directed by Kevin Williamson, the robe has been worn by different people, which is why the series can keep asking who is under the mask without repeating itself. If you want the films in sequence, the scream movies in order guide sets them out.

Is Ghostface a demon? No. In every film so far, Ghostface is a person in a costume. The fear comes from the setup: a killer who knows the victim's name, the layout of the house and the rules of the horror genre. That makes Ghostface a different kind of monster from a slasher with a fixed face or a supernatural creature, because there is no single body to hide from and no curse to break.

The voice is the one constant. Roger L. Jackson is credited as Phone Voice in Scream (1996) and as The Voice in Scream (2022), Scream VI and Scream 7. The series also has its own in-universe horror franchise, Stab, which is based on the Woodsboro murders and turns up in Scream 2 and Scream 3.

Woodsboro is where it starts, but the mask travels. By Scream 2 it is on a college campus in Ohio, by Scream 3 it is in a Hollywood studio, and by Scream VI it is in New York City. For the full scream characters roster, including the survivors who keep getting hunted, see the characters index, and for the actors who share the screen with the mask see the scream cast page.

Who Was Under the Ghostface Mask in Each Film?Spoilers

The person behind Ghostface changes in every film, and in most cases there are two of them.

Scream (1996). The original Ghostface was two killers: Billy Loomis and Stu Macher. Casey Becker is quizzed about horror films on the phone and killed, then Sidney Prescott is attacked at home. Suspicion falls on Billy, who is held and released. At the party at Stu's house the two step out together and reveal that Billy blamed Sidney's mother for breaking up his family. They stab each other to make their story believable and plan to frame Sidney's father. Sidney, helped by a wounded Gale and Dewey, turns the tables. Read the full story on the scream 1996 film page.

Scream 2. The killings begin at a preview of Stab, where Maureen and Phil are murdered during the show. Mickey, a film student, is revealed under the mask and wants to be caught so he can blame movie violence and become famous. His partner, the reporter Debbie Salt, turns on him and is really Nancy Loomis, Billy's mother, seeking revenge on Sidney. See scream 2.

Scream 3. One killer, Roman Bridger, the director of Stab 3, who faked his own death. He tells Sidney he is her half brother and says he was rejected by their mother Maureen. Each victim is left with a picture of Maureen. See scream 3.

Scream 4. Charlie Walker and Jill Roberts, Sidney's cousin. Jill says she was jealous of Sidney's fame and wanted to become the famous sole survivor, so she wounded herself to look like a victim. See scream 4.

Scream (2022). Richie Kirsch and Amber Freeman, fans of the Stab films who wanted to stage new real murders to inspire a better sequel, and who planned to frame Sam Carpenter. See scream 2022.

Scream VI. Wayne Bailey, a police detective, with his children Ethan Landry and Quinn Bailey. They want revenge on Sam for killing Richie, who was their brother. The opening murder of a professor and the two students tied to her is carried out by two different people in Ghostface masks. See scream 6.

Scream 7. One Ghostface is Karl Gibbs, an escaped patient from a mental institution, directed by a voice presenting itself as Stu Macher, a persona built by Marco Davis, an institution supervisor. A second Ghostface is Jessica Bowden, a neighbor of Sidney's who believed Sidney's fame came from killing the people who tormented her and wanted to turn Tatum into a new final girl. See scream 7.

How Is Ghostface Connected to the Survivors?

Ghostface is almost always tied to the people it hunts by family, grudge or fandom.

The first two films keep it in the Loomis family. Billy Loomis blames Sidney's mother for his broken home, and in Scream 2 his mother, Nancy Loomis, returns under the name Debbie Salt to take revenge. Billy Loomis and Stu Macher have their own pages, and Stu comes back as a name in Scream 7, where the voice calling itself Stu turns out to be a persona built by Marco Davis with computer skills.

The connection to Sidney Prescott runs deepest. Roman Bridger is her half brother, Jill Roberts is her cousin, and Jessica Bowden is her neighbor. Roman says he was rejected by their mother, Jill envied Sidney's fame and Jessica believed that fame was earned by killing, so each plan circles back to her, which is why her survival keeps defining the series.

The later films pass the story to the next generation. Sam Carpenter is revealed in the 2022 film as the secret daughter of Billy Loomis, and in Scream VI she is blamed for some of the crimes and ends up wearing her father's costume against Wayne Bailey. Ethan and Quinn, who help Wayne, are the siblings of Richie Kirsch, whom Sam killed. Tara Carpenter is attacked in the 2022 opening and is part of the New York group that Ghostface hunts in Scream VI, where she stabs Ethan.

Media ties run through the series as well. Gale Weathers is a reporter who keeps ending up in the line of fire, and Dewey is stabbed in Scream 2, survives, and dies in the 2022 film. Kirby Reed is a target in Scream 4 and returns as an FBI agent in Scream VI, where she helps end Ethan with a television. For how the genre rules shape these choices, see the scream rules page.

Has Anyone Killed Ghostface?Spoilers

Yes, survivors have killed Ghostface many times, and in each of the first six films the killers revealed in the finale end up dead.

In Scream (1996), Sidney kills Stu and shoots Billy in the head when he rises one last time. In Scream 2, Mickey is killed by Gale and Sidney, and Sidney finishes off Nancy with a shot to the head after Cotton Weary shoots her in return for an interview. In Scream 3, Roman is shot dead by Dewey after a brutal fight with Sidney, which closes the story of the original trilogy. In Scream 4, Sidney shocks Jill with a defibrillator and then shoots her, while reporters outside wrongly call Jill a hero.

The new generation takes over from there. In the 2022 film, Sam kills Richie and Tara finishes off the wounded Amber after Gale shoots her. In Scream VI, Tara stabs Ethan, Sam kills Quinn and finishes Wayne while wearing the Ghostface costume that once belonged to her father, and Kirby ends Ethan by smashing a television over his head. Sam then drops her father's mask and walks off into the city. In Scream 7, Sidney shoots Marco dead, and Sidney and Tatum together kill Jessica.

The mask itself survives every time. Scream VI has a post credit moment in which Mindy tells her friends that not every movie needs a post credit scene, and Scream 7 has a credits scene in which Mindy takes over a news report while Gale watches. A scene showing Stu Macher alive was shot for Scream 7 but cut after test screenings. A Scream 8 has been reported in development, with no director, cast or release date announced as of October 2026, according to HollywoodLife. For the latest, see scream 8.

Who Is the Scariest Ghostface? Best Moments, Ranked by Fear

In my opinion, the scariest Ghostface is the one who knows the most about you, and on that measure the strongest entry is the killer in Scream 3. The film has Ghostface mimic the voices of people Sidney trusts, and a monster that can sound like a friend over the phone is harder to defend against than one that simply chases you down a hallway. That is a matter of taste, and other fans will pick differently.

The best single scene of fear, in my view, is still the opening of Scream (1996), when a masked caller turns a chat about horror movies into a deadly game with Casey Becker. It is a lesson in how a voice and a house can do the work of a set piece, and it lets the viewer understand the rules before the first stab. Compare that with Scream 2, where Maureen and Phil are killed during a preview of Stab, and the horror is in the audience watching a film while a real murder happens among them. It could be argued that this is the cleverest use of the mask, because the theater is supposed to be safe.

For scale, the best set piece of the newer films is the crowded train in Scream VI, where Mindy is stabbed in the middle of a packed carriage. Paradoxically, a crowd is supposed to protect you, and here it only gives the killer cover. The hidden shrine theater in the same film, filled with relics from past killers, is also a strong piece of production design, because it makes the series history physical.

If you are new to this, I would start with the original and watch Scream 3 for the voice work, then Scream VI for the sheer ambition of the city. The best of the series is argued in full in scream movies ranked, and if you want a mask of your own, the scream merchandise page covers the collectibles.
