Venom 2018 Plot: How the Story Starts

Venom (2018) begins with a Life Foundation space probe that returns to Earth carrying samples of alien symbiotes, and the story is set in motion before Eddie Brock has any idea they exist. The probe found a comet covered in these organisms, and one of the four samples escapes in transit and crashes the ship in Malaysia. The remaining three are moved to a laboratory in San Francisco, where scientists discover that a symbiote needs a living host to survive and that the human trials they run tend to kill the volunteers.

Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) is an investigative journalist engaged to Anne Weying (Michelle Williams), an attorney for the Life Foundation. When he learns about the human trials through a confidential file that belongs to Anne, he confronts the company's CEO, Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed). The confrontation costs both of them their jobs and ends the relationship, so Eddie reaches the main story unemployed and on his own.

Venom is classed as a spin-off rather than a main saga film, which makes it twelfth by release and thirteenth chronologically in the Spider-Man movies in order.

Venom Soundtrack and Score: Composer, Album and Songs

Ludwig Göransson composed the score for Venom (2018), directed by Ruben Fleischer, and the album "Venom: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" was released by Sony Classical on October 5, 2018, the same day as the film's US release. It is a score album with 18 tracks, so it collects Göransson's music for the film rather than the licensed songs.

What songs are in Venom? Three are credited to the film:

  • "Venom" by Eminem
  • "No Problem" by Pusha T
  • "Let's Go (The Royal We)" by Run the Jewels

Of the three, "Venom" by Eminem is the one written for the film, and it shares its title with the symbiote at the center of the story. In my opinion, that makes it the track most closely tied to the character, since it carries his name rather than just borrowing a place in the running order.

Göransson scored only the first of the three Venom films. Marco Beltrami took over for Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Dan Deacon scored Venom: The Last Dance, so each chapter has a different musical voice. If you want the composers and songs for the whole saga side by side, the Spider-Man soundtrack page on Cinvibe compares them.

Venom 2018 Full Plot: From the Lab Break-In to the Probe LaunchSpoilers

The full plot of Venom 2018 turns on a single break-in at the Life Foundation lab, and the story gets going once Eddie is inside it. Months after he loses his job and Anne, Dora Skirth (Jenny Slate), a scientist troubled by the failing human trials, asks him to help expose Drake. During the break-in, Eddie finds his friend Maria (Melora Walters) among the test subjects. When he tries to free her, a symbiote leaves her body and bonds with him instead, and Maria dies.

Eddie escapes with the symbiote, which calls itself Venom, and he suddenly has great strength and a violent voice in his head. Drake's mercenaries hunt the pair, so Eddie turns to Anne and her new boyfriend, Dr. Dan Lewis (Reid Scott), for help. Together they learn that the symbiote is damaging Eddie's body and that it is weakened by loud sound and fire.

Drake's men then capture Eddie. Meanwhile the fourth symbiote, Riot, travels from the crash site in Malaysia to San Francisco and bonds with Drake, who plans to launch a probe to bring more symbiotes to Earth. Anne briefly bonds with Venom to free Eddie, and Venom decides to defend Earth because he has come to care about Eddie. Venom fights Riot and wrecks the probe as it launches, and the explosion kills both Riot and Drake.

Venom 2018 Premiere, Release Dates and Box Office

Venom premiered on Monday, October 1, 2018, at the Regency Village Theater in Los Angeles, opened in US theaters on October 5, 2018 and went on to gross $856 million worldwide. Australia saw it first, on September 28, 2018, a week before the US, and the UK followed on October 3. The film is rated PG-13 in the US, 15 in the UK and M in Australia.

The opening weekend came in at about $80.2 million domestically, which was then the biggest October opening on record, according to Deadline. According to Box Office Mojo, the film finished with $214 million domestically and $643 million internationally, so roughly three quarters of its total came from outside the US. That total made it the highest grossing film of the three Venom releases, ahead of both the 2021 sequel and The Last Dance. The full series picture sits on the Spider-Man box office page.

Venom 2018 Ending Explained: Eddie, Venom and RiotSpoilers

The ending of Venom 2018 has Venom and Eddie wrecking the launching probe, which kills Riot and Drake, and it leaves the pair secretly bonded in San Francisco. Anne believes Venom died, Eddie goes back to reporting, and the two of them go after criminals around the city.

In my opinion, the finale works better as a statement about the relationship than as a fight. Venom enters the story as a violent voice in Eddie's head, and the turning point comes when Anne briefly bonds with Venom to free Eddie and Venom decides to defend Earth because he has come to care about Eddie. That choice is what sends the symbiote against Riot, who is the opposite case, a symbiote bonded to a host who wants more of its kind on Earth. The probe launch gives Fleischer a big set piece, but it could be argued that the emotional beat is already finished by the time the rocket explodes.

The detail that Anne thinks Venom is gone also matters. It keeps the secret inside the partnership, and it leaves the film ending on a buddy arrangement rather than a victory lap.

The last beat points straight at the sequel. Cletus Kasady tells Eddie that he will cause carnage once he escapes, and Venom: Let There Be Carnage delivers on that with Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kasady / Carnage. That film also picks up with Eddie still sharing his body with Venom, and the two bicker like an odd couple. Perhaps the clearest sign that the first ending worked is that the sequel starts from the partnership instead of resetting it.

Venom 2018 Post Credits Scenes: Kasady and a Spider-Verse ClipSpoilers

Venom 2018 has two scenes after the story ends: a mid credits scene with Cletus Kasady and a post credits clip from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. In the mid credits scene, Eddie interviews the imprisoned Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson), who promises there will be carnage when he gets out. It is the direct setup for the 2021 sequel, where Harrelson is billed second.

The post credits sequence shows a clip from the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which Sony released in the US on December 14, 2018, ten weeks after Venom. The clip comes from a separate film, so it could be read as Sony pointing audiences toward its animated Spider-Man release rather than as a story beat for Eddie.

The sequel goes further in tying the Venom films to the wider saga: its own mid credits scene features Jameson and Peter Parker, according to TheWrap.

Where Was Venom 2018 Filmed?

Venom 2018 was filmed mainly in Atlanta and New York City, with additional shooting in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Principal photography began on October 23, 2017, in Atlanta and New York City, and the film returned to San Francisco for additional filming in January 2018. Reshoots took place in Los Angeles in June 2018.

The story is set in San Francisco, so the January 2018 shoot in the city covered the setting itself while the bulk of production happened elsewhere.

Venom 2018 Trivia: Funding, Rating and Records

Tencent Pictures funded about one third of Venom, a financing detail that helped drive its China release. The project came together around May 2017, and principal photography began on October 23, 2017, so the film moved from a deal to cameras in about five months. During that time the studio debated an R rating before settling on PG-13, and the film went through reshoots and last minute editing before release.

Tom Hardy has said his 10 year old son Louis guided his performance and acted as an honest critic, according to UPI. The film opened with about $80.2 million domestically, then the biggest October opening on record, and at 112 minutes it is the longest of the three Venom films. Its Australian release on September 28, 2018 came a week before the US date, and its post credits sequence includes a clip from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which Sony released in December of that year.
