What Is Venom: Let There Be Carnage About?

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is about journalist Eddie Brock and the alien symbiote Venom, who share one body and bicker like an odd couple while Eddie tries to rebuild his career. The story picks up after Venom (2018) and sets the pair against a serial killer who is about to gain a symbiote of his own.

The imprisoned killer is Cletus Kasady, and he will talk only to Eddie, so Detective Mulligan asks Eddie to visit him at San Quentin. Venom works out where Cletus buried his victims, which gives Eddie's career a real boost. Eddie then bans Venom from eating criminals, and the symbiote resents the new rule.

Andy Serkis directed the film, and at 97 minutes it is the shortest of the three Venom films. It is a spin-off rather than a main saga entry, so it sits at number 13 in release order and number 14 in chronological order in the spider man movies in order guide. If you want to see how the Venom films connect to the rest of the spider man movies, the mid credits scene is the bridge.

What Songs Are in Venom: Let There Be Carnage?

Marco Beltrami composed the score for Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021), and Sony Classical released the album, "Venom: Let There Be Carnage (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)", on October 1, 2021. It is a score album with 30 tracks, so it collects Beltrami's work for the film rather than a run of licensed songs. Beltrami is the only composer credited for the score, which keeps the album easy to follow for anyone tracking the music of the series.

The featured song is "Last One Standing" by Skylar Grey, Polo G, Mozzy and Eminem, and it was written for the film. Four artists share the credit on that single track, which makes it the main vocal piece tied to the release. No other songs are credited to the film.

What Happened in Venom 2? Full Plot SummarySpoilers

In Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Cletus Kasady bonds with a piece of Venom, becomes the host of a red symbiote called Carnage, and breaks out of prison to hunt Eddie Brock, until Venom devours him in a collapsing cathedral.

The film opens in 1996, when a young Cletus is separated from Frances Barrison, a girl with a destructive sonic scream, as she is sent to a secure institution. In the present day, Eddie visits Cletus in prison at Mulligan's request, Venom finds the buried bodies, and Cletus is sentenced to death. He invites Eddie to watch the execution. Cletus taunts Eddie, Venom lunges at him, and Cletus bites Eddie's hand and swallows a trace of the symbiote.

At home, Eddie and Venom have a bitter argument and Venom leaves to live on his own. At the execution, the fragment has grown into Carnage, which saves Cletus, tears through the prison and then helps him free Frances. In exchange, Cletus wants Carnage to help him kill Eddie and Venom.

Mulligan suspects Eddie and has him arrested, so Eddie asks his former fiancée Anne Weying to act as his lawyer and to find Venom. Venom, meanwhile, hops from host to host around San Francisco, and Anne finds him with Mrs. Chen. Eddie and Venom make up and escape custody.

Cletus and Frances take Anne and Mulligan hostage and plan to marry in a cathedral. Eddie and Venom fight Carnage there, and Venom is nearly beaten. He tricks Frances into screaming, which weakens Carnage and separates it from Cletus. Venom then devours Cletus and Carnage, and the collapsing cathedral kills Frances. Mulligan survives, but a fragment of Carnage has infected him.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage Release Date and Opening

The Venom: Let There Be Carnage release date in the US was October 1, 2021, according to Box Office Mojo, with the UK following on October 15, 2021 and Australia on November 25, 2021.

The schedule moved more than once. Sony first dated the sequel for September 24, 2021, then moved it to October 15, 2021, as TheWrap reported on August 12, 2021. The US release was later moved up to October 1.

The film opened domestically to $90 million, according to Box Office Mojo. It carries a PG-13 rating in the US, a 15 in the UK and an M in Australia, according to TMDB. For the full money picture across the franchise, see spider man box office.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Venom: Let There Be Carnage is that Venom consumes Cletus and Carnage, Frances dies when the cathedral collapses, and Eddie and Venom reconcile as fugitives.

The cathedral fight is decided by a trick rather than raw strength. Venom is nearly beaten, so he provokes Frances into screaming, and her sonic power is the one thing that hurts Carnage. That separates Carnage from Cletus, and Venom can finally eat both. In my opinion, this is the smartest beat in the film, because it was planted in the 1996 prologue, where a young Frances is taken away for the very scream that later brings down her husband to be. The villains' bond is the weakness, not their power.

The film also earns its reconciliation through structure. Venom walks out on Eddie after their bitter argument, hops from host to host around San Francisco, and is found by Anne in the company of Mrs. Chen. Eddie meanwhile is arrested on Mulligan's suspicion, so each half of the pair spends the middle of the film without the other. Perhaps that is why the reunion lands: Cletus and Frances arrive at the cathedral as a matched couple, and Eddie and Venom arrive as the same odd couple they were at the start, only now sure of each other.

Production context supports that reading. Syfy reported Serkis saying that Tom Hardy worked on the story with returning screenwriter Kelly Marcel, and that the film centered on their take. At 97 minutes it is shorter than venom 2018 at 112 minutes and Venom: The Last Dance at 109 minutes, so the squabbling pair gets less room than in either film, and the plot moves fast.

Mulligan survives with a piece of Carnage in him, which leaves a loose end. It could be argued that this is the kind of dangling thread a sequel would pick up, though the third film moves on to Knull and a military hunt instead. Eddie and Venom are now wanted by the law, but the argument at the center of the film is settled, and they take the beach holiday Venom wanted. The mid credits scene then pulls them toward the spiderman far from home era, where J. Jonah Jameson is already ranting about Spider-Man on television.

Is Carnage Venom's son? The film shows Carnage growing from a trace of Venom that Cletus swallowed, so it is an offshoot of Venom rather than a son in a family sense.

Venom Let There Be Carnage Post Credit Scene ExplainedSpoilers

The Venom: Let There Be Carnage post credit scene is a mid credits scene that links Eddie and Venom to Spider-Man's world.

Eddie and Venom are relaxing on their beach holiday when the room suddenly changes around them, as if they have been moved elsewhere. On the TV, J. Jonah Jameson rants about Spider-Man, and Peter Parker appears on screen. Venom licks the screen and says "This guy." TheWrap's explainer confirms that Jameson and Peter Parker appear.

Where the Story Is Set: San Francisco, San Quentin and a Cathedral

Venom: Let There Be Carnage is set mainly in San Francisco, with a key sequence at San Quentin, where Eddie visits Cletus Kasady in prison. Real shooting locations have not been published by the studio, so this covers the settings seen on screen.

San Francisco is the home ground of Eddie and Venom, and it is where Venom hops from host to host after leaving Eddie, until Anne finds him with Mrs. Chen. The climax takes place in a cathedral, where Cletus and Frances plan to marry. The closing scene moves to a beach holiday, which Venom had wanted throughout the film.

Facts

FAQs

Is Venom: Let There Be Carnage appropriate for kids, and what is its Common Sense Media rating?

Cinvibe does not reproduce Common Sense Media ratings, so no age figure from that group is quoted. The official film ratings are PG-13 in the US, 15 in the UK and M in Australia, according to TMDB. The story involves a serial killer, a prison breakout and a climactic fight in a cathedral, so the UK 15 is the strictest of the three.

Is Carnage Venom's son?

Not in a family sense. In Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Carnage grows from a trace of Venom that Cletus Kasady swallows when he bites Eddie Brock's hand. That makes Carnage an offshoot of Venom, and the film treats the two as enemies.

Is Venom 2 on Disney+ or HBO Max?

As of November 3, 2026, JustWatch via TMDB lists Venom: Let There Be Carnage on Disney Plus in the US, along with fuboTV, YouTube TV, FXNow and the Starz Apple TV channel. HBO Max is not among the US streaming services listed. In the UK it streams on Netflix, and in Australia on Stan. It can also be rented or bought on Amazon Video, Apple TV Store and YouTube.

Was Venom 2 a hit or a flop?

Venom: Let There Be Carnage grossed $507 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, on a $110 million budget, according to The Numbers, which is more than four times its cost. It opened domestically to about $90 million. It earned less than the first film and more than the third.

Why did Venom 2 get bad reviews?

Cinvibe does not reproduce other outlets' scores or review text, so no critic's reasons are quoted. What the film itself shows is a 97 minute running time, shorter than both other Venom films, with the Eddie and Venom argument and the Cletus and Frances romance sharing a very brisk plot. Our own verdict will come on the spider man reviews index.

Are they making a 4th Venom movie?

The most recent Venom film is Venom: The Last Dance, released in the US on October 25, 2024 and directed by Kelly Marcel. The next Spider-Man release on the slate is Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, dated June 18, 2027 in the US. See spider-man beyond the spider-verse for the status.
