What Is Step Up Revolution About?

Step Up Revolution follows Sean Asa, a Miami hotel waiter who leads a dance crew called The Mob, and Emily Anderson, a newcomer who dreams of dancing professionally. It is the fourth film in the Step Up movies in order, and it moves the saga out of studios and competition stages and onto the streets of Miami.

By day, Sean and his best friend Eddy work as waiters at a hotel. By night, they run The Mob, a flash mob crew that takes over public spaces in Miami, starting with a street takeover on Ocean Drive. The crew films every stunt and posts it online, chasing views and a cash prize.

Emily arrives in town preparing to audition for a respected dance company. She meets Sean, who pushes her to dance more freely, and she joins the crew. She keeps one thing from them: her father is a powerful real estate developer.

If you are choosing tonight's film for the family, the official US rating is PG-13, the UK rating is 12 and the Australian rating is PG. The film runs 99 minutes. A beat by beat account of the story, with spoilers, follows.

Step Up Revolution Plot Explained in FullSpoilers

Step Up Revolution is a story about a neighborhood under threat, and the secret at its center is that Emily Anderson's father is the man who wants to reshape it. Spoilers follow.

The film opens its second act with the romance. Sean Asa and Emily grow close while The Mob plans ever larger public performances, and Emily slowly realizes what her father's development would mean in practice. The project would flatten the streets where the crew lives and gathers, and that includes the bar run by Sean's uncle. So, Emily is caught between her family and the people who have taken her in, and she says nothing.

The silence does not last. Eddy, Sean's closest friend in the crew, works out who her father is and calls her out in front of the others. The argument that follows ends with Sean in police custody. Emily believes she has lost the friends she just made, and the distraction costs her at the audition for the dance company, where she performs badly.

The low point turns quickly. Sean and Eddy are bailed out and settle their quarrel. The Mob then joins forces with another local crew and heads for the public announcement of the redevelopment, where the two groups stage a large dance protest in front of the officials and the crowd.

Bill Anderson watches his daughter dancing happily among them, and that changes his mind. He gives up the plan to clear the area and chooses to revitalize the community instead. Sean and Emily get back together, and the crew's online following pays off with an offer to dance in commercials for a sportswear brand.

When Was Step Up Revolution Released?

Step Up Revolution reached US theaters on July 27, 2012, according to Box Office Mojo, a day after its first international openings on July 26, 2012. Box Office Mojo lists July 26 as the earliest release (EMEA and APAC), and The Numbers names the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Thailand and Russia and CIS among the first territories.

Australia followed on August 2, 2012, and the UK on August 10, 2012. Box Office Mojo reports these dates. The domestic opening weekend was $11.7 million, according to The Numbers.

The rollout was staggered, starting abroad and landing in the US in late July, in the middle of the summer movie season.

Step Up Revolution Ending Explained: The Final DanceSpoilers

The Step Up Revolution final dance is a joint protest by The Mob and a rival crew at the public announcement of the development, and it works because it turns the crew's online fame into political pressure. Spoilers follow.

What happens: the two crews perform together, the show turns public opinion in their favor, and Emily's father changes course, deciding to rebuild the neighborhood rather than demolish it. Sean and Emily reconcile, and the crew's fame becomes a paid dance deal with a sportswear brand.

In my opinion, the ending is the clearest statement of what this film wants to be. The earlier entries end on competitions: Step Up 2 builds toward The Streets, Step Up 3D toward the World Jam championship, and Step Up All In toward The Vortex. Revolution trades a trophy for a neighborhood, so the stakes are a home rather than a prize. That is a bolder idea, even if the speed of Bill Anderson's change of heart asks for generosity from the audience.

It could be argued that the emotional logic holds because of what Bill Anderson sees: his daughter, happy and surrounded by dancers. The decision is a parent's, not a politician's, which is a warm touch. Perhaps the commercial deal is the weaker beat, since it turns a protest into a branding opportunity, but it fits a film about crews who live and die by views. For the choreography across the saga, start with the best Step Up dance scenes list, and the Step Up dance crews page covers The Mob alongside the other crews.

Where Is Step Up Revolution Set?

Step Up Revolution is set in Miami, and the story is anchored by Ocean Drive, where The Mob stages its first street takeover. The hotel where Sean and Eddy work as waiters, and the neighborhood threatened by the development, round out the film's sense of place.

Specific shooting locations for the film are not named in public listings. For comparison, the first two films are set in Baltimore and Step Up 3D in New York City, which makes Miami the saga's most outdoor setting in my opinion.

Step Up Revolution Trivia and Box Office

Step Up Revolution earned about $140 million worldwide on a $33 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo, which is more than four times what it cost. The Numbers reports higher international and worldwide totals. For the series comparison, see the Step Up box office page.

Money. The domestic gross was $35.1 million and the international gross was $105 million, according to Box Office Mojo, so the international haul is three times the domestic one. The domestic opening weekend was $11.7 million, according to The Numbers.

Release. The first international openings came on July 26, 2012, a day before the US release.

Format. Wikipedia's production notes describe the film as shot in native 3D with Red Epic cameras rather than converted in post.

Numbering. Searchers often call it Step Up 4, and some listings use Step Up 4 Revolution. It is the fourth film in the main series, and the series continued with Step Up All In in 2014. Across the whole Step Up movies franchise, the TV series Step Up: High Water is separate from these films and has no film page.
