Step Up 2: The Streets moves to a new lead, Briana Evigan as Andie West, who dances with the 410 crew before auditioning for the school. Robert Hoffman plays the school's top dancer Chase Collins, Will Kemp plays Blake Collins, and Cassie Ventura plays Sophie Donovan. Adam Sevani makes his first appearance as Robert Alexander III, known as Moose, and Harry Shum Jr. plays Cable. Black Thomas plays Tuck, Sonja Sohn plays Andie's guardian Sarah, and Channing Tatum returns as Tyler Gage, who urges Andie to audition. Danielle Polanco plays Melissa 'Missy' Serrano.
Step Up 3D relocates the story to New York, with Sharni Vinson as Natalie and Rick Malambri as Luke Katcher, who runs the Pirates crew. Adam Sevani takes a larger billing as Moose, and Alyson Stoner returns as Camille Gage. The wider ensemble includes Stephen 'tWitch' Boss as Jason, Daniel 'Cloud' Campos as Kid Darkness, Ivan 'Flipz' Velez as Spinz, Christopher Scott as Hair and Luis Rosado as Monster. Who Directed the Step Up Movies?
Four directors have made the five Step Up films: Anne Fletcher directed Step Up (2006), Jon M. Chu directed both Step Up 2: The Streets and Step Up 3D, Scott Speer directed Step Up Revolution, and Trish Sie directed Step Up: All In.
Step Up (2006), directed by Anne Fletcher, was shot on location in Baltimore, including City Pier and Booker T. Washington Middle School. Fletcher also makes a cameo, as does Michael Seresin. The film was developed under the title Music High and also carries the alternate title Sexy Dance. Aaron Zigman composed the score.
Step Up 2: The Streets (2008) was directed by Jon M. Chu, and Aaron Zigman returned as composer. Chu stayed for Step Up 3D (2010), which was shot in 3D and which Disney's archive describes as the first 3D film shot entirely in New York City. Chu told TheWrap that the 3D cameras needed custom rigs and encouraged longer shots, which suits a dance film. Bear McCreary scored Step Up 3D, the first change of composer in the series.
Scott Speer directed Step Up Revolution (2012), shot natively in 3D with Red Epic cameras, with Karsten Gopinath as cinematographer. Aaron Zigman returned as composer, which makes him the credited composer on three of the five films.
Trish Sie directed Step Up: All In (2014), and Jeff Cardoni composed the score. Production took place in the Vancouver area and the Las Vegas Valley.
| Film | Director | Composer |
|---|---|---|
| Step Up (2006) | Anne Fletcher | Aaron Zigman |
| Step Up 2: The Streets | Jon M. Chu | Aaron Zigman |
| Step Up 3D | Jon M. Chu | Bear McCreary |
| Step Up Revolution | Scott Speer | Aaron Zigman |
| Step Up: All In | Trish Sie | Jeff Cardoni |

Returning and Recast: Who Comes Back Across the Series
Adam Sevani is the most visible returning actor in the Step Up series, credited as Moose in Step Up 2: The Streets, Step Up 3D and Step Up: All In. In my opinion, that makes moose step up the closest thing the saga has to a through line, since the leads change almost every time.
The series works like a relay. Channing Tatum plays Tyler Gage in Step Up (2006) and returns in Step Up 2: The Streets, where Tyler is the friend who pushes Andie toward the school. See tyler gage step up and nora step up for the first film's pair. Briana Evigan then carries Andie West from the second film into the fifth, so andie step up is the one lead who spans two eras.
The Miami era runs on a second relay. Ryan Guzman plays Sean Asa in Step Up Revolution and Step Up: All In, with Stephen 'tWitch' Boss and Misha Gabriel in the cast both times, and Kathryn McCormick plays emily step up revolution in that film only. For Sean, see sean step up.
Alyson Stoner is the other long runner, playing Camille Gage in Step Up (2006), Step Up 3D and Step Up: All In. It could be argued that the 2014 film is partly built as a reunion, because it brings Camille, Moose, Andie, Sean, Jason and Eddy into one story. That is a pleasing payoff if you have followed all five films.
Christopher Scott (Hair) and Luis Rosado (Monster) appear in both Step Up 3D and All In. Directors rarely repeat, with Jon M. Chu the only one to make two films. The composer changes three times.
Step Up: High Water is a television series, not a film. TheWrap reported in 2020 that High Water moved from YouTube to Starz. Tyler Gage does not return after Step Up 2: The Streets among the five films. A sixth film has no announced cast, and its status is tracked on the step up 6 page.
