How Many Step Up Movies Are There?
The answer to how many Step Up movies there are is five: Step Up (2006), Step Up 2: The Streets (2008), Step Up 3D (2010), Step Up Revolution (2012) and Step Up: All In (2014). No studio or trade outlet has announced a sixth film, and the television series Step Up: High Water is not counted as a movie.
The 5 Main Step Up Movies
How Many Step Up Movies Are There? All Five Films
There are five Step Up movies, and all five reached theaters between August 2006 and August 2014. They are Step Up (2006), Step Up 2: The Streets (2008), Step Up 3D (2010), Step Up Revolution (2012) and Step Up: All In (2014). The four films with a listed budget cost between $12 million and $33 million to make, and each of them grossed several times its cost worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo and The Numbers (The Numbers lists no budget for the fifth). The step up movies hub covers the series as a whole.
The count can be muddied by the titles. Only the second and third films carry a number in the title, so the fourth and fifth are easy to lose track of: Step Up Revolution is the fourth film in release order, and Step Up: All In is the fifth. The television series Step Up: High Water is a separate matter: it ran on YouTube before moving to Starz and being retitled for its third season, according to TheWrap in 2020, but it is a series, so it is not one of the five movies. As for a sixth film, no studio, distributor or trade outlet has announced a new Step Up movie or a release date, and we follow that question on the step up 6 page. There is no step up 6 trailer to watch, so the trailers hub covers the films that exist.
Step Up (2006): Baltimore, Tyler and Nora
Step Up (2006), directed by Anne Fletcher, is the film that started the series, and it follows a street dancer from Baltimore who is sentenced to community service at an arts school. Channing Tatum plays Tyler Gage, who breaks into the Maryland School of the Arts with his friends Mac (Damaine Radcliff) and Skinny, wrecks part of the building and ends up working there as a janitor. Jenna Dewan plays Nora Clark, a serious ballet student who needs a new partner for her senior showcase after an injury. Disney's archive records that it was shot on location in Baltimore, and Aaron Zigman composed the score. It cost $12 million and grossed about $114 million worldwide.
Step Up 2: The Streets (2008): A New Crew
Step Up 2: The Streets, directed by Jon M. Chu, keeps the Baltimore setting but hands the story to a new heroine. Briana Evigan plays Andie West, who is still grieving her mother and dances with an illegal crew called the 410 in an underground competition known as The Streets. Tyler Gage, played again by Channing Tatum, urges her to audition for the Maryland School of the Arts, and Chase Collins (Robert Hoffman) helps her get in. Adam Sevani appears as Moose, Harry Shum Jr. as Cable and Cassie Ventura as Sophie Donovan. The budget was $17.5 million and the worldwide gross was about $149 million.
Step Up 3D (2010): New York and the Biggest Gross
Step Up 3D brought Jon M. Chu back for a second time and swapped Baltimore for New York City. Moose and his friend Camille Gage (Alyson Stoner) arrive to start at NYU, where Moose has promised his father he will give up dancing for engineering. A street battle leads him to Luke (Rick Malambri), who runs a crew called the Pirates out of a warehouse that is behind on its payments, and to a talented newcomer named Natalie (Sharni Vinson). Luke wants to enter the World Jam championship. Disney's archive describes it as the first 3D film shot entirely in New York City, and Bear McCreary composed the score. On a $30 million budget it grossed about $159 million worldwide, the largest total of the five.
Step Up Revolution (2012): Miami and The Mob
Step Up Revolution, directed by Scott Speer, starts a fresh story in Miami and is the fourth film in the series. Sean Asa (Ryan Guzman) waits tables at a hotel and leads The Mob, a dance crew that stages flash mob performances around the city and posts them online to win views and a cash prize. Emily Anderson (Kathryn McCormick) wants to be a professional dancer, joins the crew and keeps quiet that her father is a powerful real estate developer. Stephen 'tWitch' Boss and Misha Gabriel round out the crew as Jason and Eddy. It was shot in 3D with Red Epic cameras, cost $33 million and grossed about $140 million worldwide.
Step Up: All In (2014): Los Angeles and Las Vegas
Step Up: All In, directed by Trish Sie, is the fifth film in the series. Sean and The Mob leave Miami for Los Angeles hoping to turn professional, get turned down at audition after audition and lose a dance battle to a rival crew, the Grim Knights. Sean stays on, hears about The Vortex, a contest whose prize is a Las Vegas show that runs three years, and sets out with help from Moose to build a new crew. Jeff Cardoni scored it, and the soundtrack album, Step Up All In (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), includes tracks by Diplo, Lil Wayne and Pitbull. It grossed about $86 million worldwide, the lowest of the five. The full step up soundtrack list has the details.
Are All Step Up Movies Connected?
The Step Up movies are connected, though loosely, through returning characters rather than one continuous plot. The first two share Baltimore and the Maryland School of the Arts, and Tyler Gage crosses over from one to the other. Moose then carries the link into Step Up 3D, where Camille Gage, who first appeared in Step Up (2006), arrives in New York with him. Step Up Revolution begins a new story in Miami, and Step Up: All In brings back Andie West, Moose, Camille and several Step Up 3D crew members, including Hair and Monster, alongside Sean and The Mob. It could be argued that All In plays more like a reunion than a sequel, since so much of its cast is drawn from earlier films, and that makes it a rewarding finish for anyone who has watched in order. For the crews behind those links, see step up dance crews, and for the big routines, the best step up dance scenes. The step up timeline places each film in the story.
