Sean Step Up: Sean Asa and the Actor Who Plays Him
Sean in Step Up is Sean Asa, the leader of the Miami dance crew The Mob, played by Ryan Guzman in Step Up Revolution (2012) and Step Up All In (2014). He is the lead male dancer of the fourth and fifth films, so he never appears in the first three.

Who Is Sean in Step Up?
Sean in Step Up is Sean Asa, a Miami hotel waiter who leads the flash mob crew The Mob alongside his best friend Eddy, and Ryan Guzman plays him in two of the five films. He first appears in Step Up Revolution (2012), directed by Scott Speer, which is the fourth film in the release order, and he returns as the central figure of Step Up All In (2014), directed by Trish Sie, the fifth and latest main film. Guzman is billed second in both: behind Kathryn McCormick as Emily Anderson in the first, and behind Briana Evigan as Andie West in the second.
In Step Up Revolution, Sean spends his days working at a hotel and his nights planning dance takeovers of public spaces around Miami, starting with a street takeover on Ocean Drive. The Mob films these stunts and posts them online to win views and a cash prize, so the crew is part dance troupe and part viral video studio (think of a street performance designed from the start to be shared on a phone). He is credited only as Sean Asa, with no nickname or second name, so "sean asa step up" and "sean step up actor" both point to the same character.
If you are trying to place him among the male leads, he is not Tyler Gage from step up 2006, and he is not Moose, who appears in Step Up 2: The Streets, Step Up 3D and All In but not in Revolution. Sean belongs to the Miami era, and the full list of step up characters shows where each lead sits. The step up cast page covers Guzman and the rest of the ensemble.

Sean Asa's Story Across Step Up Revolution and Step Up All InSpoilers
Sean's story runs from a Miami street crew chasing views and a cash prize to a Las Vegas finale where the prize is a three year show. In step up revolution, he and Eddy lead The Mob through bigger and bigger stunts. Emily, a newcomer hoping to win a place in a professional dance company, meets Sean, is drawn to his style and joins the crew while keeping quiet about her family. The two fall for each other as the stunts grow, until Emily learns that her father, a developer, plans to redevelop the neighborhood where the crew lives and hangs out, including the bar run by Sean's uncle. Eddy finds out who her father is and exposes her. The reveal causes a fight, and Sean is arrested.
The Mob then teams up with another local crew and crashes the public announcement of the development with a large dance protest. Emily's father sees how happy his daughter is among these dancers and drops his plan to clear the area, choosing to revitalize the community. Sean and Emily get back together, and the crew receives an offer to dance in commercials for a sportswear brand.
Step Up All In (2014) moves him to Los Angeles. The Mob keeps getting rejected at auditions and then loses a battle to a rival crew, the Grim Knights, which sends the rest of the crew home. Sean stays behind, works as a janitor at a dance center run by Moose's grandparents and sleeps in a supply closet. With Moose he recruits Andie West and other dancers into a new crew called the LMNTRIX, and an audition video wins them a place in The Vortex in Las Vegas. There, Sean pushes Andie to attempt a trick she is not ready for during an exhibition battle, and she walks off. The LMNTRIX still win, but The Mob leaves angry with Sean. Andie confronts him, he sees that he has been selfish, and he apologizes to The Mob and to Andie.
Meanwhile, two crew members discover that the contest host, Alexxa Brava, is secretly involved with the Grim Knights' leader Jasper and is rigging the competition. The Mob joins forces with the LMNTRIX for the finals.
Sean Step Up Partner: Emily, Andie and The Crew
Sean has two romantic partners across the films, Emily Anderson in Step Up Revolution and Andie West in Step Up All In, and one close friendship with Eddy in Revolution. Emily, played by Kathryn McCormick, comes to Miami hoping to join a professional dance company, and Sean pushes her to dance more freely. Their romance holds until Eddy exposes her father's plans, and it resumes after the protest that saves the neighborhood. Her own page, emily step up revolution, follows her side of that story. Emily is not among the top billed cast of All In, so Sean's later story belongs to Andie.
Andie, played by Briana Evigan, is the dancer carried over from andie step up and the second film. She joins Sean's LMNTRIX crew in Los Angeles, argues with him over a trick, and finishes the film beside him. Their friction is the reverse of his earlier romance: in Revolution, a secret splits the couple, while in All In, his own ego does.
Eddy, played by Misha Gabriel, is Sean's best friend and co leader of The Mob in Revolution, and he is billed fifth in All In. Stephen 'tWitch' Boss appears as Jason Hardlerson in both films. In All In, Sean also leans on Moose, the dancer fans know from moose step up, and on Moose's girlfriend Camille, played by Alyson Stoner. Alexxa Brava (Izabella Miko) and Jasper stand on the other side as the rigged contest's schemers. For how these groups compare with other casts, see step up dance crews.
What Happens to Sean at the End of Step Up All In?Spoilers
Sean ends Step Up All In as a winner in Las Vegas, with Andie beside him and The Mob back on his side. Before the finals he tells the crowd to stop worrying about winning and just enjoy the show, a clear change from the man who pushed Andie into a trick that made her walk off. The combined crew dances well, and Sean and Andie finish with that same trick, landing it and kissing.
The producers then tell Alexxa the LMNTRIX have won the three year contract, so the host's rigging fails and the crews celebrate together. All In is the latest main film in the series, and its ending sets up nothing further for Sean.
No further main series film has been announced with a release date, as the step up 6 page tracks. The television series Step Up: High Water is separate from the film saga and has no film page. Sean's story therefore ends with All In, and you can place it in the larger series with step up movies in order.
Sean's Best Moments: Ocean Drive and the Vortex Finals
Sean's best moments are the ones where his talent for staging a crowd meets a story reason to use it. These are my picks, and they are opinion.
The Ocean Drive takeover in Step Up Revolution is the clearest introduction to him. In my opinion it works because it shows what The Mob is: a crew that treats a public street like a stage and a phone camera like an audience.
The protest at the development announcement is the better set piece. The dance persuades Emily's father to drop his plan and rebuild the neighborhood instead of clearing it, and, in my opinion, a dance that wins a civic argument rather than a trophy stands out among the best step up dance scenes.
In All In, his apology to Andie and The Mob, followed by his speech before the finals, is the character growth I find most satisfying. And, the trick that caused the fight is the same one they land at the end, which gives the finale a clear payoff. That being said, All In has the lowest worldwide gross of the five films, $86 million against $140 million for Revolution, according to Box Office Mojo. If you want the music behind these scenes, the step up soundtrack page lists the All In tracks.
