What Is Step Up All In About?

Step Up All In is about a dance crew that leaves Miami for Los Angeles, chases professional careers and ends up fighting for a place in a Las Vegas contest. Sean Asa (Ryan Guzman) leads The Mob, the flash mob crew introduced in Step Up Revolution, and the group is turned down at audition after audition before losing a dance battle to a rival crew, the Grim Knights.

The rest of The Mob gives up and goes home, but Sean stays in Los Angeles. He hears about The Vortex, a dance contest whose prize is a three year show in Las Vegas, and with help from his friend Moose he sets out to build a new crew from scratch. That is the whole engine of the film: one stubborn dancer, one big prize and a lot of people who need convincing.

If you are choosing tonight's film for a family, the official ratings are PG-13 in the US, 12 in the UK and PG in Australia. The film belongs to the main saga, so it sits fifth in both the release order and the chronological order. Our step up movies in order guide shows where it falls among the other four films.

What Songs Are in Step Up: All In?

Jeff Cardoni composed the score for Step Up: All In (2014), and the film's songs are collected on "Step Up: All In (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)", a 13 track album that Ultra Records released on August 5, 2014.

Which songs are featured in the film? The music runs through the dance battles and crew rehearsals of the Los Angeles story, and the featured songs are:

  • "Revolution" by Diplo, Faustix, Imanos and Kai
  • "My Homies Still" by Lil Wayne and Big Sean
  • "Do It" by Pitbull and Mayer Hawthorne
  • "I Won't Let You Down (Shockbit Remix)" by OK Go
  • "Delirious (Boneless)" by Steve Aoki, Chris Lake, Tujamo and Kid Ink
  • "How You Do That" by B.o.B
  • "Lapdance" by N*E*R*D
  • "Every Little Step" by Bobby Brown
  • "Rage the Night Away" by Steve Aoki and Waka Flocka Flame
  • "Demons" by Zeds Dead
  • "Hands Up (Yellow Claw Remix)" by Dirtcaps
  • "Turn It Up" by Celestina and Bianca Raquel

Steve Aoki is the one artist who appears twice, on "Delirious (Boneless)" and "Rage the Night Away". Two of the entries are remixes, the OK Go and Dirtcaps tracks, which tells you how much of the playlist was built around club ready versions of existing songs. Cardoni's score sits alongside these licensed tracks and carries the story between the dance numbers.

Step Up All In Plot Summary: Full StorySpoilers

Step Up All In runs from a string of failed auditions in Los Angeles to a Las Vegas finale where Sean and Andie settle both the contest and their fight.

The Mob arrives from Miami with big hopes, but every audition ends in a no, and a dance battle loss to the Grim Knights sends most of the crew back home. Sean refuses to leave. He takes a job as a janitor at a dance center owned by Moose's grandparents and beds down in a supply closet. Together with Moose, he gathers Andie West and several other dancers into a new crew, the LMNTRIX. Their audition video earns them a spot in The Vortex in Las Vegas, where they learn that both the Grim Knights and The Mob have entered too.

The middle of the film is about friction. Moose walks away from the competition when his girlfriend Camille watches another woman kiss him at a bar, and he returns to Los Angeles to repair things with her. During an exhibition battle against The Mob, Sean urges Andie into a trick she has not mastered, and she leaves the floor. The LMNTRIX win anyway, yet The Mob departs furious with Sean.

Andie calls him out, and Sean admits he has been selfish. He makes his apologies to The Mob and to Andie. Camille and Moose reconcile and rejoin the crew. Elsewhere, two dancers uncover that the host, Alexxa Brava, has a secret arrangement with Jasper, who leads the Grim Knights, and that the two are fixing the results. The Mob and the LMNTRIX then team up for the finals.

Just before going on, Sean tells the audience to forget about winning and enjoy what they are about to see. The performance goes well, and Sean and Andie close it with the same trick that split them, landing it cleanly and sharing a kiss. Backstage, the producers inform Alexxa that the LMNTRIX have taken the three year contract, and both crews celebrate together.

Step Up All In Release Dates and Premiere

Step Up All In opened in US theaters on August 8, 2014, after reaching audiences abroad first. Box Office Mojo reports that the earliest release was in Belgium on July 9, 2014, weeks before the US opening. The UK followed on August 1, 2014, and Australia on August 18, 2014, according to TMDB.

The release plan changed along the way. Film Music Reporter noted that the film was first dated for July 25, 2014 in 3D before it settled on the August 8 slot. No premiere date, city or venue has been published for the film.

The film runs 112 minutes, and its official ratings are PG-13 in the US, 12 in the UK and PG in Australia.

At the box office, Step Up All In earned about $14.9 million domestic and about $71 million internationally, for about $86 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. The Numbers lists no budget for the film. The international total was nearly five times the domestic one. For the full comparison across the saga, see step up box office.

Step Up All In Ending Explained: Is It the Last One?Spoilers

In the Step Up All In ending, the LMNTRIX and The Mob perform together in the finals, Sean and Andie land the trick they argued over, and the producers overrule the host to name the LMNTRIX winners.

Why does the trick matter so much? In my opinion, it is the most honest piece of storytelling in the film. Earlier, Sean pushes Andie into a move she is not ready for, and she walks off the floor. By the finals, Sean has apologized and stopped treating her as a tool for his ambition, so the same trick lands as a shared choice rather than a demand. The kiss that follows reads as the reward for that change, not just the standard romantic beat.

Sean's pre-show line to the crowd, to stop worrying about winning and enjoy the show, is the film's thesis. It could be argued that it is also a quiet answer to the rigged contest. Host Alexxa Brava is secretly tied to the Grim Knights' leader Jasper, so the competition was never going to be fair. Once the crews unite, the result no longer depends on one corrupt judge, and the producers step in to confirm the LMNTRIX as winners of the three year Las Vegas contract.

Does Moose come out in the ending? Yes. After leaving Las Vegas for Los Angeles to win back Camille, he and Camille make up and both return to the group before the finals, and the crews celebrate together at the close.

So, is Step Up All In the last Step Up movie? It is the last main film so far, and it sets up nothing further. No studio or trade source has announced a new Step Up film, which is why our step up 6 page treats a sequel as unannounced. The brand has continued on television instead: TheWrap reported in 2020 that the series Step Up: High Water moved from YouTube to Starz. Paradoxically, a film that ends with every crew united is a tidy place to stop. For the story across all five, see the step up timeline, or see where the film lands in step up movies ranked.

Where Was Step Up All In Filmed?

Production notes list Vancouver, Canada and the Las Vegas Valley in Nevada as shooting locations for Step Up All In. The story itself moves between Miami, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, where The Vortex is held.

That split shapes how the film plays. Las Vegas is the destination of the plot and the setting for the finals, while the Los Angeles scenes, which cover the auditions, the dance center and the supply closet, belong to Sean's struggle before the contest. The earlier films leaned on single cities, with Baltimore for the first two and New York City for Step Up 3D. All In spreads its action across several, which suits a story about a crew trying to get noticed anywhere it can.

The film was first dated as a 3D release, according to Film Music Reporter, and Step Up 3D and Step Up Revolution were also released in 3D formats.
