Kiri in Avatar: Who Plays Her and Why She Is Special

Kiri in Avatar is the adopted daughter of Jake and Neytiri Sully, played by Sigourney Weaver in Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) and Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025), both directed by James Cameron. Weaver also played Dr. Grace Augustine in Avatar (2009), so Kiri and Grace share an actor, and Fire and Ash names Grace as Kiri's mother.

Who Plays Kiri?

Who Is Kiri in Avatar?

Kiri is the adopted daughter of Jake Sully and Neytiri, a young Na'vi who lives with the Sully family and appears in the second and third films of James Cameron's Pandora saga. She does not appear in Avatar (2009), and she is credited in the films as Kiri and Young Kiri.

Sigourney Weaver plays her, which settles a question many viewers ask: Kiri and Grace are played by the same actor. Weaver is billed third in both Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) and Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025), and she is also billed third as Dr. Grace Augustine in Avatar (2009).

When The Way of Water opens, sixteen years after the Na'vi drove the humans off Pandora, Kiri lives in the household of Jake Sully and Neytiri, alongside their sons Neteyam and Lo'ak and their daughter Tuk. The human boy Spider grew up with them. Of the Sully children, Kiri is the one whose bond with Pandora itself drives much of the plot. If you want the whole household in one place, our Avatar characters hub lists each of them.

Kiri's Story Arc Across Avatar: The Way of Water and Fire and AshSpoilers

Kiri's arc runs from a seizure beside a reef Spirit Tree in The Way of Water to a direct meeting with Eywa in Fire and Ash. Her story is less about fighting the RDA than about what Pandora does to her.

The Way of Water. When the family flees Colonel Quaritch and shelters with the Metkayina reef people led by Tonowari and Ronal, Kiri bonds with the Metkayina Spirit Tree. She then has a seizure, which scientists diagnose as epilepsy. In the final battle she saves Neytiri and Tuk, so the film leaves her both fragile and capable.

Fire and Ash. After Neteyam's death, the family tries to heal among the Metkayina. When Spider collapses, Kiri uses mycelia to let him breathe Pandoran air. Later, when the Mangkwan (the Ash People) take Quaritch, Jake and the children, she has plants kill the guards so they can flee. In the climactic battle she finally reaches Eywa, wildlife attacks the RDA forces, and she stops Varang from killing Neytiri.

Why is Kiri so connected to Eywa? The films show it through the Spirit Tree, the mycelia and the plants that answer her. The second film presents her seizure as a medical diagnosis, and the third has her reach Eywa. The plot beats as reported do not explain the origin of that bond, so nothing beyond them can be stated as fact.

Kiri's Family and Friends: Jake, Neytiri, Spider and Grace

Kiri's closest relationships are with the Sully family, with Spider and with her mother, Grace Augustine. Jake and Neytiri raise her as their adopted daughter, and the household includes Neteyam, Lo'ak and Tuk.

Her mother is Grace Augustine. In the ending of Fire and Ash, Spider connects with the underwater spirit trees and meets deceased Na'vi, and Kiri introduces him to her mother, Grace. That scene links the later films back to Avatar (2009), where Grace is fatally wounded in the escape from the RDA. The plots as reported do not explain how Grace's daughter came to be born, and neither names her father. Anyone following the lineage can start with the plot of Avatar (2009).

Is Kiri in love with Spider? The plots as reported show her helping him, not courting him: she uses mycelia so he can breathe Pandoran air, and she later brings him to her mother. Neither plot describes a romance between them. Spider is also the son of Quaritch, which leaves Kiri in an uneasy position when the Mangkwan take Quaritch, Jake and the children. The Metkayina, including Tonowari and Ronal, become her extended clan once Tonowari declares the Sullys part of it.

What Happens to Kiri at the End of Fire and Ash?Spoilers

Kiri's status at the close of Fire and Ash is that she has reached Eywa and is alive, and her last act on screen is a quiet one: she brings Spider to meet her mother, Grace. In the climactic battle, once Kiri reaches Eywa, wildlife attacks the RDA forces and she stops Varang from killing Neytiri.

The quiet scene comes afterward. Spider connects with the underwater spirit trees and meets deceased Na'vi, and Kiri is the one who presents him to Grace before the Na'vi formally take him in. Grace, who died in Avatar (2009), is therefore the last figure Kiri is shown with. The Ash People, Varang and the RDA remain as ongoing threats, so no source describes a settled future for her.

Where does she go from here? That is the question for Avatar 4. Disney's release schedule reportedly dates it December 21, 2029, but the studio has not confirmed that date, and TheWrap has said James Cameron had not decided whether to go forward. Kiri's Best Moments, Ranked by Priya Nair

In my opinion, Kiri's strongest scenes are the ones where Pandora responds to her, because they carry the saga's central idea more clearly than any battle does. These are my picks, and a reasonable viewer could order them differently.

  1. The Spirit Tree seizure in The Way of Water. Perhaps the most striking choice in the second film, because scientists diagnose epilepsy while the Metkayina Spirit Tree sits beside it. It could be argued that the film wants us to hold both readings at once.
  2. Saving Neytiri and Tuk in the final battle. Kiri acts decisively here, and the fragile girl of the reef becomes capable in a battle already marked by Neteyam's death.
  3. Using mycelia so Spider can breathe. It solves a problem the Sullys could not fix with a mask, and it shows her abilities changing the plot again in the third film.
  4. Reaching Eywa and stopping Varang. It pays off the second film's mystery, and I think it works better than a physical rescue would have, since Kiri's power is not a weapon like Quaritch's firearms or the Mangkwan's flamethrowers.
  5. Introducing Spider to Grace. In the quiet final scene Weaver's two roles finally meet through the story, and it is gentler than any other return from the dead in the saga, including the recombinant Quaritch.

Facts

FAQs

Who plays Kiri in Avatar?

Sigourney Weaver plays Kiri in Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) and Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025), both directed by James Cameron. She is billed third in both films.

Are Kiri and Grace played by the same actor?

Yes. Sigourney Weaver plays Dr. Grace Augustine in Avatar (2009) and Kiri in The Way of Water and Fire and Ash. Fire and Ash names Grace as Kiri's mother, and Kiri introduces Spider to her in the ending.

How was Grace's daughter born in Avatar?

Fire and Ash identifies Grace Augustine as Kiri's mother, and Kiri is raised as the adopted daughter of Jake and Neytiri. Neither film's reported plot explains the birth itself, so any detail beyond that is speculation.

Why is Kiri so special?

Kiri is special because Pandora responds to her. In The Way of Water she bonds with the Metkayina Spirit Tree and has a seizure that scientists diagnose as epilepsy. In Fire and Ash she uses mycelia to help Spider breathe, has plants kill guards, and finally reaches Eywa.

Why is Kiri so connected to Eywa?

The films show the link through the Spirit Tree, the mycelia and the plants that answer her. Fire and Ash has her reach Eywa during the climactic battle, after which wildlife attacks the RDA forces. The plot as reported does not explain why she in particular has this bond.

Is Kiri in love with Spider?

No romance between them is described in the plots of The Way of Water or Fire and Ash. Kiri helps Spider breathe Pandoran air and introduces him to her mother, Grace, and the Na'vi then take him in as one of their people.
