Who Plays Miles 'Spider' Socorro?

Who Is Spider in Avatar?

Spider is Miles 'Spider' Socorro, the human boy who grew up on Pandora and is close to the Sully children. He is played by Jack Champion, who is credited as Miles 'Spider' Socorro in Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), directed by James Cameron, and simply as Spider in Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025).

He is also the son of Colonel Miles Quaritch, played by Stephen Lang. Quaritch learns this during his hunt for Jake Sully in the second film, and much of Spider's story follows from it. In the third film he can no longer safely use a breathing mask, so he lives between two worlds: he belongs to the Na'vi children he grew up beside, yet his body and his father tie him to the humans.

Spider is not among the main figures of Avatar (2009), which centers on Jake, Neytiri and the destruction of Hometree, so The Way of Water is where his story starts. If you want the wider ensemble, the avatar cast page lists everyone, and the avatar characters index sits alongside this profile.

Spider's Story Arc Across The Way of Water and Fire and AshSpoilers

Spider moves from prisoner and go-between in The Way of Water to a hunted survivor in Fire and Ash, and the Na'vi accept him at the end. In the second film, a recombinant Quaritch is chasing Jake Sully, whose Omatikaya fighters are waging a guerrilla war on the returning RDA. Quaritch seizes Spider along with the Sully children. Jake and Neytiri get the children back, yet Spider remains with Quaritch for a while and explains Na'vi customs to him. Because that knowledge could give the clan away, the Sullys flee to the Metkayina reef people under Tonowari and Ronal.

Two moments carry him through the climax. During the fight around the RDA ship, Neteyam pulls Spider, Lo'ak and Tsireya to safety and is shot dead on the way out. Afterward Spider pulls Quaritch from the water when he is drowning, then declines to stay by his side. That refusal is the plainest sign of where he belongs, and it answers a common question: does Spider betray the Na'vi? On the plot as told, he does not. He teaches Quaritch rather than selling anyone out, and he leaves when he could have stayed.

By Fire and Ash, Neteyam is dead and Spider can no longer safely wear his breathing mask. Jake and Neytiri arrange for the Wind Traders to take him to the human science camp. Varang's Mangkwan, the Ash People, attack that convoy and the family is split apart. Quaritch takes Jake prisoner, and the two of them go looking for Spider. Spider collapses on the way, and Kiri uses mycelia so that he can breathe Pandoran air.

The Mangkwan then capture Quaritch, Jake and the children, and Kiri has plants kill the guards so they can get away. Later Quaritch seizes Spider, guides the Mangkwan to the Metkayina village and forces Jake to give himself up. At the RDA base, scientists run tests on Spider while Jake waits for execution. Neytiri slips in, Spider breaks free and Garvin releases Jake. Then comes the grimmest beat: Jake tries to kill Spider so the RDA cannot learn from him, and cannot do it. In the last battle, Jake and Quaritch are trapped in a magnetic flux and have to work together to save Spider.

That finale also answers whether Spider becomes an avatar. He does not receive a Na'vi avatar body. He joins with the underwater spirit trees, meets deceased Na'vi, and the Na'vi formally adopt him as one of their people.

Spider Avatar Parents and Family: Quaritch, Kiri and the Sullys

Spider's father is Colonel Miles Quaritch, and the people closest to him are the Sully children, whom he grew up beside on Pandora.

His relationship with Quaritch, who is played by Stephen Lang, is the most uneasy. In The Way of Water Quaritch learns that Spider is his son, and the boy teaches him about Na'vi culture while staying with him for a time. The pair never settle into a simple father and son bond: Spider saves Quaritch from drowning and still refuses to stay. In Fire and Ash Quaritch captures him again, and the two end up on the same side only in the magnetic flux that threatens to kill Spider. Quaritch then throws himself off a floating rock. You can read the full profile on quaritch.

Jake Sully and Neytiri are close to him, but their protection has limits. They send him toward the human science camp when his mask fails, and Jake cannot bring himself to kill him at the RDA base. Among the Sully children, Lo'ak is rescued with Spider by Neteyam during the ship battle, and Neteyam, Tuk and Kiri all grow up in the same household. Kiri saves his life in the third film with the mycelia, and she later introduces him to her mother, Grace Augustine, among the spirit trees.

Varang, played by Oona Chaplin, and her Mangkwan are the threat that scatters his family in Fire and Ash. See varang avatar for her side of that story, and tonowari for the Metkayina leader who shelters the family.

Does Spider Die in Avatar?Spoilers

Spider does not die in the Avatar films released so far. He survives Avatar: Fire and Ash, in which he comes close more than once: his mask fails, he is captured and tested by RDA scientists, and Jake tries to kill him to stop the RDA learning from him, then cannot go through with it. The final battle ends with Jake and Quaritch cooperating to save him, after which Quaritch throws himself off the floating rock.

Afterward Spider connects with the underwater spirit trees and meets deceased Na'vi. Kiri introduces him to her mother, Grace, and the Na'vi formally take him in as one of their people. His status at the end of the third film is therefore alive and accepted, with Kiri's mycelia having let him breathe Pandoran air. The Ash People, Varang and the RDA remain as ongoing threats, so the story is left open.

As for what comes next, Avatar 4 is listed for December 21, 2029 on Disney's release schedule. The date is reported rather than confirmed by the studio, and TheWrap says Cameron has not decided whether to go forward with it. No source describes Spider's part in a fourth film. The status of that film is tracked on the avatar 4 page, and the full run of films sits on the avatar movies in order page.

Best Spider Moments (Opinion)

In my opinion, Spider's strongest scene is in the closing battle of The Way of Water, when he saves Quaritch from drowning and then refuses to stay with him. It could be argued that this defines the character: he helps the man who is his father out of basic decency, and still chooses the Na'vi. It also settles any doubt about whether he is a traitor.

The second moment is the scene at the RDA base in Fire and Ash, where Jake tries to kill Spider to stop the scientists from learning from him and cannot go through with it. It is uncomfortable to watch, and perhaps that is the point. It shows how much Jake has come to see Spider as family, and it makes the later rescue feel earned, not mechanical.

Third, Kiri using mycelia so that Spider can breathe Pandoran air is a quiet, small scale scene next to the set pieces around it. I would rank it high because it solves the problem of his failing mask, and the scene afterward with Grace and the spirit trees is the payoff. Of the three, it leaves his future most open for the avatar 4 trailer and the next film, whenever it arrives.

Spider is Miles 'Spider' Socorro, a human boy who grew up on Pandora and is close to the Sully children. He is Colonel Miles Quaritch's son.

Who plays Spider in Avatar?

Jack Champion plays Spider in Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), where he is credited as Miles 'Spider' Socorro, and in Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025), where he is credited as Spider.

How is Spider Colonel Quaritch's son?

In Avatar: The Way of Water, Quaritch, who has returned as a recombinant, learns that Spider is his son while he hunts Jake Sully. Spider stays with him for a time and teaches him about Na'vi culture, but refuses to stay after saving him from drowning.

Does Spider betray the Na'vi?

No, not on the plot of the films. He stays with Quaritch for a period and teaches him about Na'vi culture, but he saves Quaritch from drowning and still refuses to stay with him. In Fire and Ash the Na'vi formally take him in as one of their own.

Does Spider from Avatar become an Avatar?

No, he does not take a Na'vi avatar body in the films. In Fire and Ash his mask fails, and Kiri uses mycelia so that he can breathe Pandoran air. The ending has him connect with the spirit trees and be accepted by the Na'vi.

Why doesn't Spider just become an Avatar?

The films do not give a stated reason. In Avatar (2009) avatars are Na'vi bodies that humans operate through the avatar program, and Spider is never put into one. What the story does instead is solve his breathing problem another way: Kiri uses mycelia so he can breathe Pandoran air, and the Na'vi then accept him as he is.
