Gurney Halleck: Who He Is, Who Plays Him and What Happens to Him
Gurney Halleck is a House Atreides fighter in Dune, played by Patrick Stewart in David Lynch's Dune (1984) and by Josh Brolin in Denis Villeneuve's Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024). Brolin is billed fifth in Part Two, where Gurney kills Beast Rabban Harkonnen, and the next film, Dune: Part Three, is dated for December 18, 2026.
Who Plays Gurney Halleck?
Who Is Gurney Halleck in Dune?
Gurney Halleck is a fighter of House Atreides in Dune. He is credited as "Gurney Halleck" in every film, and two actors across two separate adaptations have played him.
Patrick Stewart played him in Dune (1984), directed by David Lynch, where he is billed third behind Kyle MacLachlan and Francesca Annis. Josh Brolin took the role in Dune (2021), directed by Denis Villeneuve, billed seventh, and kept it in Dune: Part Two (2024), where he moves up to fifth. So, to answer the most common search directly, yes, Patrick Stewart did play Gurney Halleck, but only in the 1984 film. Brolin is the Gurney of the Villeneuve story.
The two adaptations are not one continuous story. Lynch's film opened on December 14, 1984, runs 136 minutes and tells the whole of Paul's rise in a single picture. Villeneuve's version splits that arc across Dune (2021) at 155 minutes and Dune: Part Two at 167 minutes. If you are new to the series, the Dune movies in order guide explains where each one sits, and the full Dune characters list shows who else is on the Atreides side.
The Atreides setup is the same in both versions. The Emperor gives Arrakis, the only source of the spice melange, to House Atreides and takes it from House Harkonnen, and the move is a trap. Gurney belongs to the household that walks into it.

Gurney Halleck's Story Across the FilmsSpoilers
Gurney Halleck's story on screen is clearest in Dune: Part Two, where he kills Beast Rabban Harkonnen, while the earlier films place him inside the fall of House Atreides without a scene of his own in the story summaries.
In Dune (1984), the Harkonnens, helped by a traitor inside the Atreides household, attack suddenly and the Duke is killed. Paul and Jessica escape into the deep desert and the Fremen take them in. What becomes of Gurney after the attack is not stated in any summary of Lynch's film, so the only thing to say with confidence is that Patrick Stewart is billed third in the cast.
In Dune (2021), the Harkonnens strike with the Emperor's Sardaukar soldiers, and the doctor Yueh disables the Atreides shields. Leto is captured and dies after a failed attempt on the Baron. Duncan Idaho and other loyal soldiers die helping Paul and Jessica reach an ornithopter. Gurney is not named in the summary of that night, but Brolin returns in the sequel, so the character is alive after the attack.
In Dune: Part Two, Paul and Jessica have joined the Fremen, Paul has declared himself the Lisan al Gaib, and the Emperor has come to Arrakis. The Fremen attack with atomic weapons and sandworms and overwhelm the Harkonnen and Imperial troops. Paul kills the Baron, and Gurney kills Rabban. That is Gurney's defining act on screen so far, and it puts him on the winning side of the battle that precedes Paul's demand for the throne.
Gurney Halleck's Allies and Enemies
Gurney's relationships are defined by loyalty to House Atreides, and the clearest ones in the films are with Paul, with the Atreides men who die before him and with the Harkonnens he fights.
Paul Atreides. Paul Atreides is the son of the house Gurney serves. In the Villeneuve films Timothée Chalamet plays Paul, and in Lynch's film Kyle MacLachlan does. In the Part Two climax, Paul kills the Baron and Gurney kills Rabban in the same battle.
Duke Leto and Lady Jessica. Duke Leto Atreides accepts Arrakis even though he suspects a trap, and he dies in Dune (2021). Lady Jessica survives, escapes with Paul and, in Part Two, survives the Water of Life and takes on a dangerous religious role among the Fremen.
Duncan Idaho. Duncan Idaho is the other loyal Atreides soldier the audience meets, played by Jason Momoa in 2021 and Richard Jordan in 1984. Is Gurney stronger than Duncan? The films never test them against each other, so there is no on screen answer. The difference the story does record is that Duncan dies covering the escape in Dune (2021), while Gurney lives to fight in Part Two.
The Harkonnens. Baron Harkonnen is played by Stellan Skarsgård in the new films, and Beast Rabban is played by Dave Bautista. Gurney's kill of Rabban is the direct payoff of the Harkonnen conflict. Feyd Rautha, the Baron's champion, is left to Paul in the knife duel.
The Fremen. Stilgar's Fremen take Paul and Jessica in, and the battle in which Gurney kills Rabban is the Fremen assault with atomic weapons and sandworms. The wider factions are covered in the guide to the Dune houses.
What Happened to Gurney Halleck? Death, Survival and Dune 3Spoilers
Gurney Halleck does not die in either Villeneuve film, and in Dune: Part Two he kills Rabban during the final battle.
He survives the Harkonnen and Sardaukar attack that kills Leto and Duncan in Dune (2021), and he is on the field when the Fremen overwhelm the Emperor's forces in Part Two. After that battle, Paul forces the Emperor to yield, takes Irulan as his future wife, and sends the Fremen to attack the Great Houses' orbiting fleet. Chani rides away alone on a sandworm. Where Gurney stands at the close is left open.
Does Gurney betray Paul? Nothing in the stories of the three films shows it. The betrayals they do show are Yueh's disabling of the Atreides shields in Dune (2021) and the traitor inside the household in Dune (1984). Gurney's only act in the climax of Part Two is killing a Harkonnen for Paul's side.
Is Gurney in Dune 3? Dune: Part Three opens on December 18, 2026, according to TheWrap, and Part Two sets up a third film based on Dune Messiah. Gurney's place in that film, and Brolin's return, has not been confirmed. The latest footage is collected on the Dune Part Three trailer page, and the film's cast is tracked in the Dune cast guide.
Best Gurney Halleck Moments
My pick for Gurney's best moment is the Rabban kill in Dune: Part Two, and the reason is placement more than spectacle. It lands in the middle of the largest battle in the series, where atomic weapons and sandworms are doing the loud work, so a quiet personal payoff for a surviving Atreides man gives the sequence a human center.
In my opinion, the strongest case for Gurney as a character comes from contrast with Duncan Idaho. Duncan is the loyal soldier the audience watches die in Dune (2021), so Gurney's survival into Part Two reads as the answer to that loss. It could be argued that Brolin plays this as a man carrying the house after it has fallen, which fits a film in which Paul is leaving his old life behind.
The casting history is the other thread to follow. Patrick Stewart played Gurney in 1984, in a film that runs 136 minutes, and Josh Brolin plays him across two films totaling 322 minutes. Perhaps the fairest way to compare them is by scope: the longer version gives a single act, killing Rabban, room to carry weight.
If you want to see Brolin's Gurney in action, start with Dune: Part Two, then go back to Dune (2021). For Stewart's version, watch Dune (1984) as its own film, and see where to watch Dune for current availability.
