What Is Halloween H20: 20 Years Later About?
Halloween H20: 20 Years Later follows Laurie Strode, who faked her death two decades after the Haddonfield murders and now lives in California as Keri Tate, headmistress of Hillcrest Academy. She drinks too much, has nightmares and fears that her brother Michael Myers will eventually find her. Her teenage son John is tired of her overprotectiveness and wants room to breathe.
Meanwhile, Michael tracks down a nurse who knew Laurie's file and kills her, which puts him on the trail to his sister. John decides to skip the school's Yosemite trip so he can stay on campus with a few friends. The setup is simple: an almost empty school, a mother who has spent twenty years waiting for this night, and a killer who has not forgotten her.
The film is the seventh in the release order. If you are working through the series, our guide to Halloween movies in order shows where H20 sits.

What Songs Are in Halloween H20: 20 Years Later?
John Ottman composed the score for Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998), and no soundtrack album is credited to the film. Ottman is the only composer credited for the music, so his score is the film's main musical identity.
The one featured song is:
- "What's This Life For" by Creed
The song plays during the party sequence and returns over the end credits. That gives it two placements: first inside the story, at a social gathering, and then as the film moves into its closing credits. Because the film has only one featured song, those two appearances stand out against the score that runs through the rest of the film.
For the music across the whole series, see the Halloween soundtrack page.

Halloween H20 Plot Explained in FullSpoilers
In the full story, Michael first returns to Haddonfield and breaks into the home of Marion Chambers, a former colleague of Dr. Loomis. He kills her and steals the files on his sister. In California, Laurie goes about her life as Keri Tate while the past presses on her. John skips the school trip with his girlfriend Molly and his friends Charlie and Sarah, planning a quiet night on the empty campus.
Michael reaches Hillcrest Academy after getting past the security guard, Ronny. He stalks and kills several of the teenagers and adults, and Laurie finds the bodies. She gets John and Molly to safety, then decides she cannot keep running. She goes back to confront Michael herself, armed with an axe.
Michael falls from a balcony and appears to be dead, and Laurie's colleague Will Brennan helps her. But, Michael survives and is not finished. He is later loaded into a coroner's van, and Laurie hits the van to free him from it. She then faces him alone and ends it by cutting off his head as sirens close in.
The violence in the film is directed at teenagers and staff on a school campus, and the finale is a long physical struggle between a brother and sister rather than a chase through dark streets.

Halloween H20 Ending ExplainedSpoilers
The Halloween H20 ending shows Laurie Strode killing Michael Myers by cutting off his head with an axe after a long struggle, while emergency sirens close in. In my opinion, the scene works because it answers the question the whole film has been asking: what does a survivor do after twenty years of hiding? She stops hiding, and she does it by choice rather than by accident.
The last move is the one people argue about. Laurie hits the coroner's van to free Michael, so she can finish the fight on her own terms instead of leaving it to the police. It could be argued that this is the most deliberate act in the series by any character, because it removes the doubt that every earlier film left open.
There is also a business reason for the finality. Jamie Lee Curtis agreed to return on the condition that the film not hint at a sequel, so the story is presented as a conclusion to Laurie's arc. That being said, the series did not stay closed. Halloween: Resurrection opens by treating Laurie's victory as a mistake, with her in a psychiatric facility and shaken by the belief that she killed the wrong man. Perhaps that is the clearest case of a retcon in the saga, and it is why H20 reads better as a finale than as the middle of a story.
The useful comparison is with Halloween 2018, which Universal describes as a sequel to the 1978 film that departs from its sequels, and which finds Laurie in a fortified home. H20 chose a different version of her, one who ends the story, and the Halloween timelines explained guide shows how the branches fit together.
