Tommy Doyle in Halloween is the Haddonfield boy Laurie Strode babysits in Halloween (1978), directed by John Carpenter, and he is played by four actors across four films: Brian Andrews in 1978, Paul Rudd in Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995), Skyler Gisondo in Halloween (2007) and Anthony Michael Hall in Halloween Kills (2021). He survives the first two of those stories and is killed in the 2021 film.

Who Is Tommy Doyle in the Halloween Films?
Tommy Doyle is the young Haddonfield boy in the care of Laurie Strode on Halloween night in Halloween 1978, and the name comes back in three later films. He is credited simply as Tommy in 1978 and as Tommy Doyle in every film after that. Across the whole Halloween movies list, a different actor plays him each time he appears.
| Film | Actor | Credit |
|---|---|---|
| Halloween (1978) | Brian Andrews | Tommy |
| Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995) | Paul Rudd | Tommy Doyle |
| Halloween (2007) | Skyler Gisondo | Tommy Doyle |
| Halloween Kills (2021) | Anthony Michael Hall | Tommy Doyle |
Which Tommy you are watching depends on the timeline. Halloween the Curse of Michael Myers, directed by Joe Chappelle, belongs to the original series that runs through Halloween 4 and Halloween 5, and it sets up the later sequel Halloween H20. Rob Zombie's Halloween 2007 Rob Zombie is a spin-off, where Skyler Gisondo is credited as Tommy Doyle in a billing slot of 12. Halloween Kills, directed by David Gordon Green, belongs to the 2018 trilogy, a direct sequel to the 1978 film, so Anthony Michael Hall plays the grown version of the boy from Carpenter's original. If the order is confusing, Halloween timelines explained lays out each branch.

Tommy Doyle's Story Arc Across the FilmsSpoilers
Tommy's arc runs from a child kept safe in 1978 to a man who leads a crowd in 2021, and it takes a different shape in each timeline. In 1978, Laurie is babysitting Tommy while her friend Annie looks after Lindsey down the street. Michael Myers trails Laurie through the day and kills Annie, Lynda and Bob. Laurie fights Michael off, gets Tommy and Lindsey to safety and calls for help, and Dr. Loomis shoots Michael off a balcony.
In The Curse of Michael Myers (1995), Tommy is a withdrawn adult who has spent years trying to understand Michael. He finds the baby son of Jamie Lloyd, named Steven, after Michael kills her. A cult led by Dr. Terence Wynn and tied to a curse known as Thorn wants both Michael and the child. Michael returns to Haddonfield and kills several members of the Strode family, and Kara Strode, her son Danny and baby Steven are taken to Smith's Grove Sanitarium. Tommy and Kara fight to get the two children out alive.
Halloween (2007), a spin-off directed by Rob Zombie, credits Tommy Doyle to Skyler Gisondo, and its Haddonfield story centers on Laurie Strode and Michael.
In Halloween Kills (2021), the story picks up on the night of Halloween 2018. Tommy gathers survivors of the 1978 rampage at a local bar and leads an angry crowd through town. Part of the crowd chases down an escaped patient named Lance Tivoli, mistaking him for Michael, and the chase ends with the man's death. That scene shows how far the mob has drifted from protecting anyone.
Who Is Tommy Doyle Close To?
Tommy's closest ties are to the people who keep him alive: Laurie Strode in 1978, and Kara Strode in 1995. Laurie is the high schooler who babysits him on Halloween night, and the 1978 film ends with her getting him and Lindsey to safety. Lindsey is the girl Annie looks after down the street, and the same name is credited to Kyle Richards in 1978 and again in Halloween Ends.
His link to Michael Myers changes with the film. In 1978, Michael is trailing Laurie, and Tommy is simply the child in her care. In 1995, Tommy hunts for answers about Michael for years, and when he finds Jamie Lloyd's baby, the cult and Michael both come for the child. Jamie Lloyd is the baby's mother, and her son is the reason Tommy is pulled back in. Dr. Loomis is drawn back into the case in that film too, and he stays behind inside Smith's Grove while Tommy and Kara escape.
In 2021, Tommy's circle is the Haddonfield community. He rallies survivors at the bar, and Allyson joins the hunt while Laurie, from her hospital bed, urges people to stop. Leigh Brackett, played by Charles Cyphers, is among the group around him.
Does Tommy Doyle Die in Halloween Kills?Spoilers
Yes, Tommy Doyle is killed in Halloween Kills (2021), the only film in which he dies. His end comes at the Myers house, where the crowd he gathered at the bar tracks Michael Myers down. Karen stabs Michael with a pitchfork and takes his mask, and the mob takes that as proof he is finished. Michael gets back up and turns on the group, and Tommy is among those he kills, alongside Leigh Brackett (played by Charles Cyphers).
It is a grim payoff for a character who spent the film urging Haddonfield to act, since the crowd he built is the one that gets cut down. The other Tommys fare better. The child of Halloween (1978) is carried out of danger by Laurie Strode, and the adult in Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995) walks out of Smith's Grove Sanitarium with Kara and the two children, while Dr. Loomis stays behind inside. Halloween (2007) credits Skyler Gisondo as Tommy Doyle but does not make him the center of its ending.
No dated follow up film exists. Halloween Ends (2022) closed the trilogy, and TheWrap reported in October 2023 that Miramax won the Halloween TV rights and plans a series with Trancas, with no film title or date given.
Tommy Doyle's Best Moments
In my opinion, Tommy's best moments are the ones where a small amount of screen time changes how the rest of the film feels. The first is the end of 1978. Laurie fights Michael, wounds him several times, and the thing she does next is get Tommy and Lindsey out of the house and call for help. It gives the children a clear job in the story, and it makes the finale about protecting someone rather than only surviving.
The second is the escape from Smith's Grove in The Curse of Michael Myers. Michael turns on the cult, and Tommy and Kara have to carry two children out of a building that is turning into a trap. Of the four Tommys, I would argue Paul Rudd's has the most to do, because the film makes him its lead and gives him a goal that lasts the whole picture.
The third is the bar in Halloween Kills. Anthony Michael Hall's Tommy turns a room of survivors into a crowd, and then the Lance Tivoli chase shows what that crowd does when it is certain and wrong. It could be argued that this is the franchise's sharpest comment on its own town: Michael does not need to chase Haddonfield when Haddonfield will chase an innocent man for him.

FAQs
Who played Tommy Doyle in Halloween?
Four actors play Tommy Doyle. Brian Andrews plays Tommy in Halloween (1978), Paul Rudd plays him in Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995), Skyler Gisondo plays him in Halloween (2007) and Anthony Michael Hall plays him in Halloween Kills (2021).
Who played the first Michael Myers?
The TMDB credits for Halloween (1978) list Tony Moran as Michael Myers age 23. Halloween Kills (2021) separately credits Airon Armstrong as The Shape (1978), while Halloween (2018) and Halloween Kills credit James Jude Courtney and Nick Castle as The Shape.
Why did Michael Myers stalk Tommy?
In Halloween (1978), Michael trails Laurie Strode, and Tommy is simply the child she is babysitting, so the film gives Michael no separate motive for Tommy. In The Curse of Michael Myers, Michael and a cult pursue Jamie Lloyd's baby son, whom Tommy has found, so Tommy ends up in Michael's path through the child.
Does Tommy Doyle die in Halloween?
Spoiler: Tommy Doyle is killed in Halloween Kills (2021) when Michael Myers rises and kills most of the mob at the Myers house, including Tommy and Leigh Brackett. He survives Halloween (1978) and The Curse of Michael Myers.
Why did Brian Andrews not play Tommy Doyle in Halloween Kills?
Brian Andrews is credited as Tommy only in Halloween (1978), where Tommy is a child. Halloween Kills credits Anthony Michael Hall as the adult Tommy Doyle, and no filmmaker has published a reason for the recast that we can cite.
Is there going to be another Michael Myers movie after Halloween Ends?
No dated film has been announced. Halloween Ends (2022) closed the Blumhouse trilogy, and TheWrap reported in October 2023 that Miramax won the Halloween TV rights and plans a series with Trancas, which may grow into a wider film and TV universe. TheWrap gave no film title or date.
