Who Is Moose in the Step Up Movies?
Moose is the nickname of Robert Alexander III, who is credited in the films as Robert Alexander III / 'Moose' and is played by Adam Sevani. He appears in four Step Up films: Step Up 2: The Streets (Sevani is credited fifth), Step Up 3D (credited third), Step Up Revolution (credited further down the cast list) and Step Up All In (credited eighth).
What kind of person is he? In Step Up 3D, the film that puts him closest to the center, he is a new college student in New York City who has promised his father he will give up dancing and concentrate on engineering. That promise drives his story: a young man with a practical plan and a body that will not stay still. His closest companion in that film is Camille Gage, played by Alyson Stoner, who arrives in the city with him. If you are new to the series, think of him as the friendly newcomer who turns out to be one of the best dancers in the room.
He is not in every film. The 2006 original, Step Up (2006), does not list him among its first fifteen credited cast members. So, if you follow the release order set out on our page for step up movies in order, you meet him in the second film, see him again in the third and fourth, and then find him in the fifth, Step Up All In.

Moose's Story Arc: From Step Up 2 to Step Up All InSpoilers
Moose's arc runs across four films and 6 years of release dates, with Sevani billed fifth in 2008, third in 2010 and eighth in 2014, and credited further down the cast list in 2012.
Step Up 2: The Streets (2008). Directed by Jon M. Chu, this is Moose's first film, and Sevani is credited fifth, behind Briana Evigan, Robert Hoffman, Will Kemp and Cassie Ventura. The story belongs to Andie West, a Baltimore street dancer who builds a new crew of outcast students at the Maryland School of the Arts after her old crew, the 410, throws her out. It ends with the school's director accepting street dance as a real art form.
Step Up 3D (2010). Also directed by Chu, this is the film built around him. Moose and Camille move to New York City for college, and Moose tries to keep his promise to stop dancing. He is pulled into a street battle, wins it and is invited by Luke Katcher to join the Pirates, a crew living in a warehouse that may soon be sold at auction. Luke wants to win the World Jam championship to save the building, and he also recruits Natalie, a gifted dancer who is secretly the sister of Julien, leader of the rival Samurai crew. Moose struggles to balance exams with rehearsals, argues with Camille (who has feelings for him) and then makes up with her through a dance on the street. When the warehouse is lost and Luke breaks up the crew, Moose rebuilds the Pirates with Camille and friends from the MSA Crew.
Step Up Revolution (2012). Directed by Scott Speer, this Miami set film centers on Sean Asa and his flash mob crew, The Mob, and on the newcomer Emily Anderson. Sevani is credited as Moose further down the cast list, so he is a supporting presence in a story that belongs to Sean and Emily.
Step Up All In (2014). Directed by Trish Sie, this film brings Moose back in a larger role. Sean Asa works as a janitor at a dance center run by Moose's grandparents and sleeps in a supply closet, and Moose and Sean recruit Andie West and other dancers into a new crew called the LMNTRIX. The group wins a place in The Vortex in Las Vegas, where the prize is a three year show.
Moose's Friends, Rivals and Romance
Moose's most important relationship is with Camille Gage, who arrives in New York with him in Step Up 3D and is his girlfriend in Step Up All In. In the 2010 film she is the friend who has feelings for him, and the two repair an argument with a dance on the street. In the ending of that film they also share a kiss, while Natalie and Luke reunite at the train station.
His bond with Luke Katcher is the one that shapes his place in the Pirates. Luke runs the crew out of a warehouse that could be sold at auction, and before he leaves for film school in California he passes his sneakers on to Moose, which marks Moose as the new leader. Those sneakers matter on screen because Moose first noticed a stranger wearing a rare pair, followed him to a street battle and so found the crew in the first place. On the other side of the story stands Julien, the Samurai leader and Natalie's brother, who ends up owning the Pirates' warehouse.
In Step Up All In he reconnects with Sean Asa and Andie West, two characters who come from other films in the series. Sean, who leads The Mob in Step Up Revolution, works for Moose's grandparents, and Andie, the lead of Step Up 2, joins the LMNTRIX when Moose and Sean recruit her. That makes Moose something of a connector between the series' generations. He and Camille also face a crisis in that film when she sees another woman kiss him at a bar, and he goes back to Los Angeles to win her back. Where Is Moose Now? His Fate at the End of the SeriesSpoilers
Moose is alive and back with his friends at the end of Step Up All In (2014), the last film in the series, which sets up nothing further. After Camille and Moose make up, both return to the crew, and the LMNTRIX perform with The Mob in the finals. The producers overrule the host, Alexxa Brava, and name the LMNTRIX winners of the three year Las Vegas show, and the crews celebrate together.
What has happened to him since? No studio, distributor or trade outlet has announced a new Step Up film, so there is no later screen appearance to report. The status of the next film is tracked on the page for step up 6. The television series Step Up: High Water, which moved from YouTube to Starz according to TheWrap in 2020, is a TV series rather than a film.
Best Moose Moments in the Step Up Films
In my opinion, Moose's best moments come in Step Up 3D, because that is where the writing gives him something to want and something to lose. This ranking is mine, and it leans on plot beats rather than on choreography details.
1. The street dance with Camille. After an argument that threatens their friendship, the two make up by dancing on the street. It could be argued that this is the emotional center of the whole film, since dancing is how these characters say what they cannot say aloud. It is also a nice contrast with the competition scenes, where the stakes are a building and a trophy.
2. The sneakers handoff. Luke gives his sneakers to Moose before leaving for California. The gesture closes the loop that began when Moose followed a stranger in rare shoes to a battle, and it crowns him the new leader of the Pirates without anyone needing to make a speech.
3. Winning his first battle. Moose is pulled into a dance battle and beats his rival, which is the reason Luke invites him into the Pirates. It is a good example of the series' habit of starting a story with a single set piece and letting the plot grow out of it.
4. Recruiting the LMNTRIX. In Step Up All In he helps Sean build a new crew, and the two of them recruit Andie together. Watching a former newcomer become the experienced friend is a satisfying payoff for anyone who followed him across his four films.
To see where each film sits, the ranking page for step up movies ranked sets them side by side.
