Divergent Series Box Office Worldwide: Every Film at a Glance

The Divergent series earned $765 million worldwide from three films, with $347.3 million coming from the domestic market and $417.8 million from international markets, according to Box Office Mojo. Insurgent (2015) is the highest grossing film at $297 million worldwide, and Divergent (2014) is the highest grossing at the domestic box office with $150.9 million. The table sets each gross beside its production budget, so the shape of the series shows at once.

FilmYearBudgetDomesticInternationalWorldwide

Insurgent2015$110 million$130.2 million$166.8 million$297.0 million

Divergent (2014), directed by Neil Burger, opened the series on a budget of $85 million, according to The Numbers. It collected $150.9 million in the United States and Canada and $137.9 million elsewhere, for $288.9 million worldwide. The Numbers lists the international total lower, at about $125 million, so a second tracker will give a slightly smaller worldwide figure. Every gross here is the Box Office Mojo figure, and the same caution applies to Insurgent, where The Numbers also differs a little on its international and worldwide totals.

Insurgent (2015), also billed as The Divergent Series: Insurgent, was directed by Robert Schwentke on a $110 million budget. It earned $130.2 million domestically and $166.8 million internationally, and its $297 million worldwide total is the series high.

Allegiant (2016), also billed as The Divergent Series: Allegiant, was again directed by Schwentke on a $110 million budget. It grossed $66.2 million domestically and $113.1 million internationally, for $179.2 million worldwide. Across the three films, international markets supplied about 55% of the total. Divergent Box Office vs Budget: Why the Series Stopped at Three

The Divergent box office pattern is a steady decline after Insurgent, and in my opinion that decline explains why the series ended with three films rather than four. The numbers are all from Box Office Mojo and The Numbers, and the reading of them is mine.

Start with worldwide gross against budget, because it shows how each film performed on its own terms. Divergent (2014) earned about 3.4 times its $85 million budget. Insurgent earned about 2.7 times its $110 million budget. Allegiant earned about 1.6 times its $110 million budget. Gross is not profit, since theaters keep a share of ticket sales and marketing costs sit outside the production budget, so those ratios are a guide to relative strength and not a statement about what the studio made. That being said, a ratio that falls from 3.4 to 1.6 while the budget rises from $85 million to $110 million is a clear warning sign for any sequel.

The domestic figures tell the same story more sharply. Insurgent took about 14% less than Divergent (2014) at home, which is an ordinary sequel slip. Allegiant then took about 49% less than Insurgent at home, falling from $130.2 million to $66.2 million. Worldwide, Allegiant was down about 40% on Insurgent. Perhaps the most telling detail is that Insurgent held up better abroad, at $166.8 million against Divergent (2014) at $137.9 million, so the second film did not collapse everywhere. The drop with Allegiant came in both home and overseas markets.

The studio's plans moved with those numbers. The titles of the final two films were changed to Allegiant and Ascendant, with Allegiant due in March 2016 and Ascendant in spring 2017, according to The Christian Science Monitor. In February 2016, Deadline reported that Schwentke would not direct Ascendant, a report relayed by ScreenCrush. Then, in July 2016, Slashfilm reported that Ascendant would become a television movie after Allegiant's weak performance. It was later redeveloped as a Starz series and was never made. In 2023, Entertainment Weekly quoted author Veronica Roth saying Ascendant will never be made and that the story feels complete.

So, is the story fully closed? Not quite, but nothing is confirmed either. As of 3 November 2026, no new Divergent film has been officially announced or dated, and the status of any new film is unconfirmed. Roth published a new alternate universe novel, The Sixth Faction, which was due on 6 October 2026, with a sequel due in February 2027. Any talk of a film of that book is speculation until a studio announces a deal. For the current position, see Divergent Ascendant, and for how the books and films differ, see Divergent books vs movies.

My practical suggestion is to judge the series by its first two films, which grossed $288.9 million and $297 million worldwide, and to treat Allegiant as the point where audience interest fell away.
