How Many Divergent Movies Are There?
The answer to how many Divergent movies are there is three: Divergent (2014), Insurgent (2015) and Allegiant (2016), all led by Shailene Woodley as Tris and Theo James as Four. A fourth film, Ascendant, was planned but never made, and as of November 3, 2026 no new Divergent film appears to have been announced or dated.

How Many Divergent Movies Are There Supposed to Be?
There are three Divergent movies, plus a planned fourth, Ascendant, that was never made, so the answer depends on whether you count the plan or the finished work. The three films are Divergent (2014), directed by Neil Burger; Insurgent (2015), directed by Robert Schwentke; and Allegiant (2016), also directed by Schwentke. The finale was announced as two films, Allegiant and Ascendant, with release windows of March 2016 and spring 2017. Think of it like a television show cancelled after its third season: the story was mapped out for longer, but only three installments reached the screen. The Divergent movies in order page explains how to watch them.
Divergent (2014) is the opener, directed by Neil Burger and released in the US on March 21, 2014. It runs 140 minutes, the longest of the three, and cost $85 million to make. It took $289 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. The film introduces a walled future Chicago split into five factions (Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless and Erudite) and follows Beatrice Prior as she chooses Dauntless. The Divergent 2014 page covers its cast, plot and ending in full, and the Divergent factions page explains the five groups.
Insurgent (2015) moved to a new director. Robert Schwentke took over from Burger, who stayed on as an executive producer, and Joseph Trapanese replaced Junkie XL as composer. It reached US theaters on March 20, 2015, runs 119 minutes and had a $110 million budget. It grossed $297 million worldwide, the highest total in the series, and it was the first film to feature Naomi Watts as Evelyn Johnson-Eaton and Octavia Spencer as Johanna Reyes. The Insurgent movie page has the full breakdown.
Allegiant (2016) is the last film released. It opened in the UK on March 11, 2016, a week before its US date of March 18, runs 120 minutes and had the same $110 million budget as Insurgent. Its worldwide gross fell to $179 million, a drop of about 40 percent from the previous film. Jeff Daniels joined the ensemble as David. More detail sits on the Allegiant movie page, and the Divergent box office page sets the three grosses side by side.
Why Did the Series Stop at Three Films?
In my opinion, the numbers explain the stop better than any statement from the studio. The budget rose from $85 million for Divergent (2014) to $110 million for both sequels, while the worldwide gross climbed only slightly for Insurgent and then fell sharply for Allegiant. A company that spends more and earns less on the third try rarely funds a fourth at the same scale. The split of the finale made this riskier: Allegiant had to set up Ascendant, so the third film carried a cliffhanger duty that the first two did not. Perhaps the clearest comparison is with the way Divergent (2014) ends, which works as a complete story, against Allegiant, which was built to hand over to a sequel that never arrived. The change of director between the first and second films, and the exit of Schwentke from Ascendant reported in February 2016, a month before Allegiant opened, left the production without the continuity a long-running saga needs.
Did Divergent 4 Come Out?
No, Divergent 4 did not come out, because Ascendant was never made. The fourth film was planned as a theatrical release, and Schwentke's exit from it was reported in February 2016. After Allegiant's weak performance the project was reworked as a TV movie in July 2016, and it never went into production. Entertainment Weekly reported in 2023 that Lionsgate's plans for a final film had been scrapped, and that Veronica Roth, the author of the books, said Ascendant would never be made and that the franchise feels complete. For the status of any revival, see the Divergent Ascendant page, and for the films that do exist, the Divergent Ascendant trailer page lists their trailers.
Is There Any New Divergent Film Planned?
No new Divergent film appears to have been announced, and no release date, cast or crew has been reported for one. Roth's new alternate universe novel, The Sixth Faction, was due on October 6, 2026, with a sequel, The Last Testimony, due in February 2027. Those are books, and no adaptation of either appears to have been announced. Any talk of a film of the new novel should be treated as speculation until a studio says otherwise.
Who Is in All Three Divergent Movies?
Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort and Zoë Kravitz are credited in all three films. Woodley plays Tris, James plays Four, Teller plays Peter, Elgort plays Caleb and Kravitz plays Christina. The Divergent cast page lists the full credits, and the Divergent characters page covers the main roles, including Tris Prior, Four, Jeanine Matthews, Caleb Prior, Peter Hayes, Evelyn Johnson-Eaton, Christina and Eric Coulter.
To watch the films now, where to watch Divergent lists streaming and rental options in the US, UK and Australia.
