The Allegiant ending comes down to two acts of exposure: Tris broadcasts to Chicago and the wider world that the city was a genetic purity experiment run by the Bureau, and Caleb's explosion breaks the cloaking shield and exposes the hidden Bureau headquarters. Peter flees toward the Bureau, and the film leaves the Bureau's fate, and life beyond the wall, open for the planned final film, Ascendant.
In my opinion, the two acts do different jobs. The broadcast changes what people know, and the explosion changes what can be hidden, because the cloaking shield is how the Bureau kept its experiment out of sight. It could be argued that the ending is therefore a reveal rather than a resolution, and viewers who want a closed story are likely to feel short changed.
The sequence that leads there is built from reversals of earlier loyalties. David wins Tris over with her mother's memories, yet the Bureau's practice of taking children and wiping their memories, which Four discovers on his mission, shows what that partnership costs. When David later persuades Evelyn to release the amnesia gas, he is applying the same memory wipe to an entire city. The finale is the Bureau's method turned on Chicago, and Tris's broadcast is the counter move: where the gas would erase what people know, she hands them the one fact they were never given.
The supporting characters carry the plot's turns. Four talks Evelyn out of the gas, which keeps the final act from being a one woman rescue. Peter, promised a reward by David, shoots Evelyn in the leg once he realizes he has been betrayed, then opens the vault so Tris and Four can halt the gas. Caleb, whom Tris and Four freed in the opening escape, helps destroy the gas hub and then blows up David's hovercar. I read that as the film closing his arc with an act of use rather than forgiveness.
Compared with Divergent (2014), which was framed by a girl choosing a faction inside the wall, Allegiant ends by showing that the wall was never the whole world. That is a larger story than the first film set up, and it explains why the ending feels unfinished: the question it raises, what life looks like outside Chicago, is the one Ascendant was meant to answer.
The production history explains why it stayed open. Lionsgate renamed the last two films in September 2015, and the finale was planned for spring 2017. Schwentke left Ascendant in February 2016, and after Allegiant's weak performance Lionsgate chose to skip theaters and turn it into a TV movie, as reported in July 2016. In 2023, Roth told Entertainment Weekly that Ascendant will never be made. As of November 3, 2026, no new Divergent film has been announced, and the Divergent Ascendant page tracks the status.
