What Is the Insurgent Movie About?

The Insurgent movie is a dystopian science fiction thriller in which Tris Prior and Four become fugitives in a walled future Chicago. It is the sequel to Divergent (2014), and it picks up days after the Erudite faction's attack on Abnegation. Jeanine Matthews, the Erudite leader, declares martial law and hunts the Divergent, meaning people whose minds do not fit a single faction.

Tris, Four, her brother Caleb and Peter go on the run and shelter with the peaceful Amity faction. Meanwhile, Jeanine's Erudite and the Dauntless leaders Max and Eric have found a mysterious box that only a Divergent can open, which makes Tris their most valuable target. When soldiers close in on the Amity compound, the group has to flee, and Tris carries heavy guilt over the deaths she caused. The film runs 119 minutes. What Songs Are in Insurgent? Soundtrack and Score

Joseph Trapanese composed the score for Insurgent (2015), and Interscope Records released two albums on March 17, 2015: the soundtrack "Insurgent", with 8 tracks, and "Insurgent (Original Motion Picture Score)", with 20 tracks. The first album gathers the songs, while the second is given over to Trapanese's score for the film.

Seven songs are tied to the film's music. Two of them are team ups, with M83 joined by HAIM and Woodkid joined by Lykke Li, and the rest range from the rock of Royal Blood and Imagine Dragons to the quieter voices of Anna Calvi, Zella Day and SOHN. The songs are:

  • "Holes in the Sky" by M83 and HAIM
  • "Never Let You Down" by Woodkid and Lykke Li
  • "Blood Hands" by Royal Blood
  • "Warriors" by Imagine Dragons
  • "Sacrifice" by Zella Day
  • "The Heart of You" by Anna Calvi
  • "Carry Me Home" by SOHN

If you want the sound of the whole trilogy rather than this one sequel, the other two films and their composers are covered on the Divergent soundtrack page.

Insurgent Plot Summary: What Happens in the Full StorySpoilers

The full story of Insurgent moves from a hiding place in Amity to a deadly set of simulations in the Erudite headquarters, and it ends with the box opened and Jeanine dead. Jeanine's allies find a box marked with the symbols of all five factions, and they learn that only a Divergent of exceptional ability can open it. Tris, Four, Caleb and Peter hide among the Amity until Dauntless soldiers arrive, and then they must run.

The group boards a train and meets the Factionless, led by Four's mother Evelyn, who wants Four to help her form an army against Erudite. Four refuses her plan, and the group moves on to the Candor faction, where Tris and Four are put on trial under truth serum. There, Tris admits she killed Will, a friend of Christina, and the confession strains her bonds with her friends. Dauntless forces then attack Candor, and Eric and Max capture Tris because her test results show she can open the box. Four rescues her, and Eric dies in the escape.

Jeanine next uses mind control to push Dauntless captives toward a deadly ledge, and Tris gives herself up to stop the deaths. She is forced through a series of dangerous simulations meant to unlock the box, while Caleb sides with Erudite. Peter helps Tris fake her death so she can reach the simulation room, and she passes the final test and opens the box. It plays a message showing that the city and its factions are an experiment and that the world outside is waiting. The Factionless free Tris and Four, Jeanine is arrested, and Evelyn later kills her in her cell.

When and Where Did Insurgent Premiere?

Insurgent premiered on March 11, 2015, at the Odeon Leicester Square in London, nine days before its US theatrical release on March 20, 2015.

The UK release came on the same day as the US date, March 20, 2015, and Australian theaters opened a day earlier, on March 19, 2015. Screen Daily confirms the US date, while Box Office Mojo reports the UK and Australian dates. The film opened in China later, on June 19, 2015, where it grossed $18 million. Its worldwide total was $297 million according to Box Office Mojo. The wider figures are laid out on the Divergent box office page.

Insurgent Ending Explained: What the Box RevealsSpoilers

The Insurgent ending reveals that the city of Chicago and its faction system were built as a controlled experiment, with the Divergent as its goal, and that the survivors must leave the walls. Tris opens the box after Peter helps her fake her death, and she finds a recorded message, which reframes the whole conflict.

Why does that matter? In my opinion, the film spends its first two acts treating the box as a prize that Jeanine wants for power, and the final scene turns it into an answer about the city itself. Everything before it, from the Amity hideout to the truth serum trial in Candor, is a chase after a container, and the message tells the audience that the chase was never the real story. That is a sharper pivot than the one in Divergent (2014), which ends on the Erudite attack on Abnegation and a personal escape rather than a change in what the world is.

The faction system breaks once Jeanine is taken down, and the Factionless gain power under Evelyn. Then Evelyn kills Jeanine in custody, and it could be argued that this is the most telling beat of the ending, because it shows the new leader is a danger of her own rather than a clean replacement. Four refused his mother's plan for an army earlier in the film, so her act in the cell confirms the instinct behind that refusal. Allegiant picks the thread up directly, opening with Evelyn in control of the city, the wall closed and Jeanine's supporters on trial.

Perhaps the neatest touch is the order of events: Tris passes the final simulation, which Caleb's choice to side with Erudite makes more costly, and only then does the message arrive. Her guilt over Will, spoken aloud under truth serum in Candor, is the weight she carries into that room, so the reveal lands on a character who has already been tested emotionally. As a sequel, Insurgent is the film that widens the world, and that is also its risk: it hands the third film a large premise. The instruction to leave the city sets up Allegiant. For how the film compares with the novels, see Divergent books vs movies.

Where Was Insurgent Filmed?

Insurgent was filmed mainly in Atlanta, Georgia, with additional Chicago, Illinois, location and aerial work. Principal photography began in Atlanta, and the start was reported on May 27, 2014.

The production used the Atlanta federal penitentiary, the Serenbe community for the Amity compound and downtown Peachtree Street. Chicago skylines were joined to the Atlanta locations, and Chicago location and aerial shots of the Loop were captured in July 2014. The first film had shot mainly in Chicago, so the sequel built its version of the city from both places.

Insurgent Trivia

Several details from production explain why Insurgent looks and sounds different from Divergent (2014). Robert Schwentke replaced Neil Burger as director, and Burger stayed on as an executive producer. Joseph Trapanese replaced Junkie XL as composer.

The shoot moved to Atlanta, while the first film had mostly been shot in Chicago. The reported production budget was $110 million. In China the film opened on June 19, 2015, and grossed $18 million there. According to Box Office Mojo, the domestic gross was $130 million and the international gross was $167 million.
