Divergent Movies Ranked: Best to Worst
Divergent movies ranked from best to worst, in my opinion: Divergent (2014) first, Insurgent second and Allegiant third. The first film has the clearest story and the best use of its world, while the sequels lose focus as the series heads toward a fourth film, Ascendant, that was never made.
Key Takeaways
- Divergent (2014), directed by Neil Burger, is the best of the three Divergent movies, and it is the only one I would call a complete film on its own.
- Insurgent (2015) grossed more worldwide than Divergent (2014), about $297 million against about $289 million, but it cost $25 million more to make.
- Allegiant (2016) is the lowest grossing of the three at about $179 million worldwide on a $110 million budget, and it ranks last for me as well.
- All three films carry a PG-13 rating in the US, so the series suits teenagers and up rather than young children.
- As of 3 November 2026 no new Divergent film has been announced, and Ascendant remains unmade.
Hot Takes
- Hot take (opinion): Insurgent is the most underrated of the three, because its pace is better than the first film and its set pieces are cleaner than anything in Allegiant. Priya Nair
- Hot take (opinion): Divergent (2014) is a better film in its choosing ceremony than in its final act, and I would watch the first hour over the last hour every time. Priya Nair
- Hot take (opinion): Splitting the story across a planned Allegiant and Ascendant did more damage to the series than any casting or effects decision. Priya Nair

Divergent
Divergent (2014) has the clearest setup and the best single sequence in the series, the choosing ceremony where Beatrice picks Dauntless. Its five factions are explained through one virtue each, and Tori's altered aptitude result gives the plot a secret to carry. In my opinion it works as a complete film on its own.
- 2

Insurgent
Insurgent runs 119 minutes against 140 for the first film, and the pace is better for it. Jeanine's martial law and the box that only a Divergent can open give the chase a clear object. It grossed the most of the three, though a $110 million budget leaves a thinner return than the first film.
- 3

Allegiant
Allegiant ranks last because, in my opinion, the world beyond the wall gets less care than Chicago received in the first film. It earned the least of the three on the same $110 million budget as Insurgent. It was also the first half of a planned two part finish, and the fourth film never arrived.
How I Rank the Divergent Movies, Best to Worst
I rank the three Divergent movies on how well each one tells its own story, how clearly it uses its world and how much its ending pays off, and I treat box office as context rather than a score. This is opinion, and audience and critic aggregate numbers play no part in it. The grosses come from Box Office Mojo, and the rest comes from watching the films against one another.
1. Divergent (2014), directed by Neil Burger. The first film is the best because its setup is the most patient and the most specific. Its five factions (Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless and Erudite) are each explained through a single virtue, and the aptitude test scene, where Tori quietly changes Beatrice's record and tells her to hide the result, gives the plot a secret to carry. The choosing ceremony, where Beatrice leaves her family for Dauntless, is the strongest sequence in the series. At 140 minutes it is also the longest, but it still earned about $289 million worldwide on an $85 million budget. Tom Holkenborg wrote the score, and Ellie Goulding's "Beating Heart" and "Dead in the Water" sit on the soundtrack. You can read more on the divergent 2014 page.
2. Insurgent (2015), directed by Robert Schwentke. The second film is faster and tighter, at 119 minutes, and I think it is better than its reputation. Jeanine Matthews declares martial law and hunts the Divergent, the group shelters with Amity, and a mysterious box that only a Divergent can open gives the chase a clear object. It also has the stronger soundtrack, with M83 featuring Haim, Royal Blood and Woodkid featuring Lykke Li among the songs, and Joseph Trapanese scored it after replacing Junkie XL. Paradoxically, it made the most money of the series, about $297 million worldwide, yet its $110 million budget leaves it with a thinner margin than Divergent (2014). See the insurgent movie page for the details.
3. Allegiant (2016), also directed by Robert Schwentke. The third film ranks last because it asks the audience to follow the characters beyond the wall without giving the new setting the same care that the first film gave Chicago. It grossed about $179 million worldwide on the same $110 million budget, the weakest return of the three. Allegiant was also the first half of a planned two part finish, with the final film to be titled Ascendant. Tove Lo's "Scars" is the notable song on its soundtrack. Start with the allegiant movie page if you want the specifics.
Why did the series stop at three? Allegiant performed weakly, and Ascendant was moved to a TV movie after it, according to Slashfilm. Author Veronica Roth has said the planned final film will never be made, as an interview carried on Yahoo reports. Lionsgate's plans for a last film were scrapped, so the trilogy of films ends without a conclusion. Details on that sit on the divergent ascendant page.
Which should you watch first? If you are new to the series, watch Divergent (2014) and decide from there, because it works as a story even if you stop. FAQs
Are the movies or books better for Divergent?
In my opinion the books give the fuller picture, because the films stopped before the planned final chapter. The films have the casting and the Dauntless set pieces, and Divergent (2014) is the one I would recommend if you only want to watch one. Our divergent books vs movies page compares them in more depth.
Is Divergent family friendly?
All three Divergent movies are rated PG-13 in the US, 12A in the UK and M in Australia, so they suit teenagers and older viewers better than young children. In Insurgent, Tris carries heavy guilt over the deaths she caused. If you are watching with a younger teenager, I would start with Divergent (2014) and judge from there.
What other movies are similar to Divergent?
In my opinion the closest comparison is The Hunger Games, which also follows a young heroine through a divided dystopian society. That is my suggestion, so pick it up if you liked the faction system and the focus on a single heroine.
What is the best Divergent movie?
In my opinion the best Divergent movie is Divergent (2014), directed by Neil Burger. It has the clearest setup, the choosing ceremony and the most complete story of the three, and it earned about $289 million worldwide on an $85 million budget according to Box Office Mojo.
Which Divergent movie made the most money?
Insurgent made the most, about $297 million worldwide according to Box Office Mojo, compared with about $289 million for Divergent (2014) and about $179 million for Allegiant. Insurgent and Allegiant each cost $110 million, so Divergent (2014) has the best return against its $85 million budget.
Will there be a fourth Divergent movie?
As of 3 November 2026 no new Divergent film has been officially announced or dated. Ascendant was planned as the fourth film, was redeveloped as a TV movie and then a Starz series, and was never made. Veronica Roth's new novel The Sixth Faction was due on 6 October 2026, but no studio announcement of a film adaptation has appeared. See divergent ascendant for the current status.
