Who Is Billy the Puppet in Saw?

Billy the Puppet is the puppet tied to John Kramer, the Jigsaw Killer, who runs the games of the Saw franchise and tests people's will to live through deadly games. Saw (2004), directed by James Wan, opens with photographer Adam and oncologist Dr. Lawrence Gordon waking up chained to pipes in a filthy bathroom, with a dead man on the floor between them holding a revolver and a microcassette recorder.

That setup shows how the games reach their victims: through recorded messages rather than through a person in the room. Tapes tell Adam to survive, and tell Lawrence to kill Adam by 6:00 or his wife and daughter will die. A killer who stays out of sight and speaks only through recordings is the pattern the later films keep returning to.

What Is the Story Behind Billy the Puppet and the Games?Spoilers

The story of the games is the story of who holds the Jigsaw name, and across the films that role moves from person to person. In Saw (2004) the twist is that the supposed corpse in the bathroom stands up and is revealed as John Kramer, the real Jigsaw, who shocks Adam through his chain, walks out and seals the door.

Saw II shows Amanda, a survivor of an earlier game, working as John's accomplice, and Saw III ends with Jeff cutting John's throat with a power saw. The games do not stop there. Saw IV exposes Detective Hoffman as a second apprentice, and Saw 3D ends with Dr. Gordon, now Jigsaw's apprentice, locking Hoffman in the original bathroom.

Jigsaw 2017 brings a recording in John Kramer's voice ten years after his death, and reveals pathologist Logan Nelson as a new Jigsaw. Saw X goes back and sits between the first two films, with a dying John Kramer hunting the con artists who faked a cancer cure in Mexico. Through all of it, the recordings keep the games running while the people behind them change.

Who Is Connected to Jigsaw?

Jigsaw is the title taken by John Kramer, played by Tobin Bell, and later claimed by others. The man is the author of the games, and several characters carry them on.

The closest tie is to john kramer saw, whose games, tapes and traps define the series. Amanda Young and Mark Hoffman both carry on Kramer's work in different ways, and Dr. Gordon becomes Jigsaw's apprentice in the closing minutes of Saw 3D.

One caution for newcomers: Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) features a pig puppet inside a box, sent alongside a piece of a rookie detective's tattooed skin. The killer behind it is William Schenk, a copycat who fakes his own death. The spin-off is covered at spiral saw.

What Happens to the People Behind Jigsaw?Spoilers

The deaths that matter in the Saw series belong to the people who hold the Jigsaw name. John Kramer is killed in Saw III, Amanda is shot by Jeff in the same film, and Hoffman is locked in the original bathroom at the end of Saw 3D.

The Jigsaw legacy keeps surviving them. Jigsaw 2017 ends with Logan Nelson revealed as the new Jigsaw, which leaves the legacy alive. The next chapter, saw 11, is in development with director Mike P. Nelson, according to TheWrap, with no release date announced.

Best Moments of Jigsaw's Games

In my opinion, the best Jigsaw moments are the ones that show how little the victims actually see of their captor. The strongest example is the end of Saw (2004), where the supposed corpse that was in the room the whole time stands up as John Kramer and shocks Adam through his chain. A killer who controls events from inside the room is a better scare than one who waits outside it.

The second moment is Saw III, where John's final tape tells Jeff that a girl named Corbett has also been taken and that only John knows where she is. Even from a deathbed, the games run through a recording. It could be argued that this is the clearest proof that the series is about voices and rules more than faces.

The third is Jigsaw 2017, where a recording in John Kramer's voice reaches five strangers in a barn ten years after his death. That is the point where the idea that Jigsaw is a person finally gives way to the idea that Jigsaw is a method. For the full franchise, see the saw timeline explained page.
